I was smarter. I waited until I was 22 and had proper car mastery. Had a nice small corner without any traffic nearby that was frozen over, so I could execute a slow and safe 90° handbrake turn - perfect execution with countersteering and all. Turned out she had placed a 10 liter bucket of white paint in the trunk (can't remember whether I knew about it beforehand) and this was probably the reason a decent amount of it was spilled. Tldr: It was the perfect handbrake turn but she hadn't closed the damn lid tight enough.

soundseeker63 normally I'll agree and joke about it but I would say they are maximizing space efficiency but that also means the car is never fully off as the brake master cylinder is always engaged. always buy cars with old school brakes ;)
Seriously though, it is safer having an analog, cable activated handbrake. If for some reason your normal brake pedal fails you can apply ever increasing handbrake to slow yourself down. With the push button ones they either wont work at highway speed or will activate fully with both outcomes likely ending in a crash.
Absolutely! because the push button ones are usually tied to the electronic brakes they dont want you to have it activated at highway speeds and thus... i see it as a safety nightmare

After years of pootling around in my Dad’s old Astra (beggars can’t be choosers!) with an e-brake, I went to move his shiny, new, ultra-modern Toyota off their drive to make room for a delivery and I spent ages looking for the release button, only to find it had a good old-fashioned handbrake lever! Toyota are listening, at least…
My 944 doesn't have a strong enough handbrake to lock up the wheels, not to mention it's tucked between the door and the seat. Maybe that's why I don't have a girlfriend.

If you want to do handbrake turns, make sure you have a RWD car. Because if something goes wrong (ie. the cable snaps) you can clutch kick and pretend nothing broke
Its funny cause yesterday I was executing said handbrake turn in a snowy parking lot to impress the ladies watching, and hitting one of their cars in the process.
I’ve finally was able to experience the handbrake. It certainly comes in handy in snow if you pull it at the right time when you don’t have a LSD equipped front drive car. Thankfully I haven’t overdone it yet.
A mate of mine owned a mini and tried to impress his new girlfriend with a handbrake turn…got it up to about 40mph, cranked over the steering, yanked on the handbrake…slewed it around… and ripped all four tyres off the rims.

Mini vans more often then not have pedal brake or foot brake levers not a hand brake levers. At least here in the US they do. I have tried to do a foot brake turn or even drift using a Foot pedal brake and it doesn't work. The reason is because of how the pedal brakes work compared to hand brakes. The pedals have to be ratcheted on and then canceled out. As much and as hard as I tried I could not rachet it on and cancel it out fast enough to slide. I tried soo hard but no beans.
When I was younger, I tried to impress a girl with a handbrake turn in my mk4 Ford Escort. Did it in an empty carpark, but with a static burger van in the centre. I dumped the clutch, went to pull the handbrake but in my excitement, slipped off the clutch, katapulted towards the only thing in the car park and took the open door and a load of plastic bread baskets along for the ride. 🤣🙈 she pulled that face!

Had a rear wheel drive Ranger, all i had to do was slam the accelerator (was a supercharged V6 on a company truck for some reason) and the rear would break loose, let off and it'd come right back. Good times...good times.
Handbrake turns only work when you can do a full 180 using throttle and be in gear when you let off the lever and get going in an instant. It helps when they are drunk too.
Our neighbour (He was a window dresser for several big London stores) could not work out why he could not do a handbrake turn in an Alfasud. Those that know, will understand. As will drivers of SAAB cars of that era.
My current car is a 2010 and has a proper handbrake. If it gets to the point that it's on its last legs I'll do a handbrake turn to send it out in style.
