there are a set of canyons south of Batumi starting at GF08 going east on the 8 line on that map that has turns very similar to the movie. i have it somewhat plotted out and you can set SAMS directly above the canyon

To be fair russia doesnt even have 3 production off the line su-57s lol. They have 2, the other 10 or 13 are handbuilt prototypes with different engines and different parts for testing different stuff. The third one in reality would of turned back. It wouldnt in reality came head on at the f-14 from the direction of the carrier, that su-57 would of in reality turned around and headed out of there after losing 2 of his mates. He would of never been flying around wrecklessly near a carrier like that, with there awacs up and everything. And he would of had to of known the other f-18 was out there and had a solution on him.

In the film, they needed to remain below the missile batteries radar, but I don't recall the need to stay at 100ft AGL. If you make it 200ft, then it would allow for undulations in the terrain.

@@grimreapers 300ft was the ceiling but wanted them to fly at 100ft to keep them well under the threat zone! Also they actually say in the movie the Sam's are radar guided!!! But Chaff doesn't look as good as flares on a movie screen when it comes to countermeasures lol. Other online Squadrons are doing and have done intensive recreations of the movie and have found that the actual mission is plausible, with only big issue being not enough time for the laser guided bomb to locate and track the laser to the target after release as they go over the ridge to attack the Uranium enrichment plant.

Cap, regarding the Fail messages, there are a couple of changes that can be done on the Triggers, to make them less annoying: 1- Create a trigger zone that covers only the extent of the canyon pass where the flight ceiling is required, that trigger zone will be used as an additional Condition for the triggers to check for. This way, the annoying wall of messages on the right corner of the screen will NOT come out as soon as the mission starts, because the game will check FIRST if the players are INSIDE the trigger zone, and THEN check for the altitude/speed requirements. 2- Instead of the Action "Message to All" that says "A1 Failed", "A2 Failed" etc., use the Action "Message to Unit", with the message "You Failed". By doing so, the players will NOT be warned of the other players failures all the time - which creates that wall of messages on their screen - and they'll only be warned ONCE when THEY fail. You can even go fancy and make 2 triggers like this for each Unit/Player - one for checking Altitude and the other for Speed. So, for each Player trigger, on the Conditions panel, there will be 2 conditions: First one for the "Unit Inside Trigger Zone" and then one for the Altitude/Speed requirement. The Action panel will contain the action "Message to Unit" saying "You Failed: Speed under 600 knots" for the Speed Trigger and a message saying "You failed: Above Max Altitude" for the Altitude Trigger. This way, the players will not be annoyed by the wall of messages, and they will only be warned when - and why - they fail.

Full marks for nostalgia, awesome cinematography, an incredible final act, and a super feel-good ending have you walking out the theatre with a sense of euphoria which hookwinks you into forgetting just how meh 75% if what you just saw was.

Brilliant stab at a clearly daft Hollywood mission. I watched it in 4DX moving seats et al. Before strapping in I removed my analytical brain and placed it in the handy holder on the armrest and went along with the ride enjoying every second of it. My wife loved it but then her eyes started glazing over when we had our after film meal when I started explaining in semi techical detail what a preposterous load of old tosh it really wasin the cold light of day-I'm sure the plot derives from a Biggles story from 1918. But as an action packed, emotional and visually splendind movie its one of the best.

64 Tomahawks ~ 100Mio.$ 2 Super Hornets lost during the mission ~ 120 Mio.$ 1 Super Hornet lost during the training for that mission ~ 60 Mio.$ And those are only the biggest, most obvious chunks of the overall costs for this mission I know it's a movie and all, but the entire mission (start to finish) is so fantastic, I can't help but at least ask a few questions. Why wouldn't they use B-2's, or extremely low and fast flying B-1B's in order to destroy the runways with (more or less) inexpensive CBU's? Aren't most JDAMs also guided by a combination of GPS and INS and could therefore also be dropped by a B-2 and hit a jammed target? Since Tomahawks are also guided by an INS, what is holding them back to just send a barrage of those directly to the target? (The Tomahawks would be guided by GPS up to the point where it would get jammed by the GPS jammers. After that the INS would take over) The obvious problem would be that this would make TG Maverick in parts a USAF movie. But wouldn't it have been great to see how such a joint operation would've worked out? The "rivalry" between those military branches could've also been very entertaining. Btw., Why didn't they knew beforehand that there were two enemy aircraft patrolling the airspace? They might have been stealth aircraft, but the runways must've been close enough for the AWACS to visually see when and what aircraft is taking off? PS: I mostly fly civilian flight sims(FSX, XP11), but I also love flying in DCS (A-10, F-14, F-86, P-51, Ka-50, UH-1H). Also, love your work Reapers. Very interesting and fun stuff.

@William3000x
@William3000x 2 года назад
In the movie, if I'm not wrong, they explain that the area around the canyon and the target facility is using some sort of GPS jamming technology (I have NO IDEA if this is even a thing IRL), rendering strategic bombing useless. My first impression AFTER watching the movie and thinking about the mission was: "If they used Tomahawks to attack the air base, then why not simply use a couple of Tomahawks ON THE FACILITY? Just get the coordinates for the ventilation entry and send the missile there..." But then I saw someone on youtube comment that it couldn't be done like that because of that "GPS Jammer" thing... I guess I need to watch the movie AGAIN, to check on that intel that I may have missed. 😁

@@William3000x Hi William. Just read my post again with the context, that INS means "Inertial Navigation System". An independent navigation system based on the principles of dead reckoning that is reliant on gyros. This system is usually constantly updated and corrected by a GPS until it has to work autonomously with no outside information. Tomahawks have it, and most JDAMS also use a combination of GPS and INS. Just in case the GPS signal vanishes, or gets jammed. Some cruise Missiles are even capable of daytime celestial navigation, exactly for reasons like depicted in the movie. You could even drop such a cruise missile from a B-2 and most fighter bomber. Also the area around the airfield isn't GPS jammed, so it wouldn't be a problem to simply carpet bomb the runway with CBUs that are specifically made for runway destruction. You could do this with a B-2, a B-1B, or a couple F-117s. PS: In reality you could probably also have some highly trained JTACs on the ground that would mark the target with a laser for tactical bombing. Probably the the cleanest, cheapest and most effective way of taking out such a (jammed)target. Such a mission would certainly be conducted in the night-time and it would be a very different movie. But that's what they would probably do.

It's funny ... Considering that on October 27, 1984, the MI-24 was the first in the world to shoot down an aircraft, that it could be equipped with air-to-air missiles, then it could give a worthy rebuff to the F-18 pilots. Also, the Russians (after all, it is Maverick who "fights" with them in the film?) usually, in addition to long-range and medium-range air defense systems like the S-300 and the S-400 Triumph long-range and medium-range anti-aircraft missile system, there are also short-range air defense systems , such as Pantsir, Osa-AK and Osa-AKM, Tunguska. Which are designed to deal with broken and low-flying enemy air targets. Which can be placed along the entire length of the canyon along which the Maverick "broke through" to the object. So, I think the Maverick in the movie (and in real life) would not have a single chance to break through the opponent's air defense. And with the Su-57 ... Could a 5th generation aircraft not have been able to detect a missile launch on it? Are you seriously? Although... After all, this is Hollywood... It inspires everyone that the United States is invincible. In movie...

To be fair the canyon in the movie had no buildings in it and little to no trees. To actually simulate what happened in the movie you would have to increase the allowed altitude a bit to account for there being many trees and buildings in the canyon you guys are running this in. The canyon this part of the movie was filmed in is very rocky around the river, no trees along its banks, and there had been a fire recently that burned a lot of the other trees.

+GrimReapersAtomic *The anonymous enemy in **_Top Gun: Maverick_** is depicted with a red spread-falcon insignia that would look boss on wings and tail* of a Lavochkin-5 Forsirovann'yj Nochnoj for an alternate video concept for: *WOLF TOTEM (ЧОНОН СУЛД) / THE HU* (Better Noise single, CatNo N/A) ( B. Dashdondog / The HU ) Eleven Seven Music / Downtown Music, BIEM about modern-day Mongols rising for a just war. Midway through the last stanza, the La-5FN is making turns for an enfilade of two ranks of infantry at double-time march; the artillery spotter, knowing the -5FN to be inside _Strela_ minimum arming radius, grabs a PG-7VL rocket, stuffs it into an RPG-7M2 muzzle, shoulders the combo, aims at the tip of the propeller spinner, fires at 80m slant range. The PG-7VL flies straight as an arrow, strikes the -5FN in the wing box; the -5FN bursts into flames in a starboard jink, breaks up in four seconds.

So how are you in afterburner yet not going supersonic and no mention of using your airbrake.... Are the planes not as fast as real life? And why is the flir not exactly facing forward. And dropped below 600 on the way up to the end smokes so failed. Why no restart

I was an avionics and integrated weapons tech in the Navy. Also maintained all my squadrons ATFLIR pods. (pronounced "atee-fleer") You did it in legacy hornets. The engines are less powerful but they're way lighter, so more maneuverable than the supers used in the movie. Also ATFLIR pods go under the port wing, station 4. Never seen anyone put one on 5, I'm not sure why it's even possible in the game. I'd have to run a special triax line just to get you video. Also, mindblower: this mission contains routine maneuvers. There's nothing spectacular about the flight plan by Navy standards. Our pilots could fly this mission blindfolded. Crazy, right?

I had just tried the one on the dcs user files site and it was beyond irritating trying to get in position for that last shot, then defenses light up. Can’t wait to try this, looks like a blast too.

The most dangerous thing is neither the sams or bandits. Its the tree at 18:13 that was still standing after an F18 crashed in it and were still fighting to collect more scalps 😅

I loved maverick. I get why they didn't use F-35's because there isn't a 2 seat version so they couldn't film them. I also think it's interesting this is basically the X-wing trench run but with f-18's.

Why didnt they just use B2s or Cruise missiles? A Uranium Enrichment facility is a extremely high value target... Sending in 4 F-18s without SEAD, CAP and apparently with no airborne CSAR teams was less believable than the "Mig-28s" from TG1

Why is the terrain here so different to what is in the movie. The famous part of the scene was when after dropping the bombs, they had to pull up and climb over the next mountain. What am I missing?

If the Navy or Marine Corps ever watch this, Simba may get a call from one of them. That was beautiful to watch. G-LOC should be a thing in this game, so the total experience could be had.

Maybe the reason the Su-57 caught up with Cap's F-14 was because he was in mil instead of zone 5?
@grumpycat_1
@grumpycat_1 2 года назад
Yeah when I saw the movie I was like .... If he just gets airborne sweeps the wings back and goes to full burner out to sea, it will SAVE this move for me... There is no way the Su-57s would have seen, than had time to turn in to, catch up and IFF a slicked f-14A going balls to the wall on the deck... And since an F14 can't dog fight a Su-57, which Maverick would have known all he could have done was RUN... but of course they f-ing ruined what would have been a thrilling believable drag race and turned it into a turn fight with guns... And of course Mav got the kills turning with an SU-57...
