🎬 In this FilmSpeak video essay we discuss why Top Gun: Maverick and Skyfall are the SAME Movie...kinda and How THIS James Bond Movie Inspired Top Gun: Maverick
🔔 SUBSCRIBE: ru-vid.com...
Top Gun Maverick is a masterpiece and it's no coincidence that it shares a lot in common with another masterpiece in the James Bond franchise. The first time I watched the absolute masterpiece that is Top Gun Maverick I stated that it was the Skyfall of Tom Cruise movies and if you've seen Top Gun 2, I bet you can figure out where I'm coming from with that declaration. Since that initial viewing, I've been trying to figure out and put into words my feelings about the dichotomy between the Top Gun sequel and Daniel Craig's James Bond masterpiece Skyfall and a recent rewatch of Skyfall only further defined the parallels between the two films. They share a core critique of what progress is not. Skyfall - and Craig's era of Bond in general - argues that the person holding the gun is what matters, not the gun itself; Top Gun: Maverick even affirms this in the text, that "it's not the plane, it's the pilot." Hell, they even have the same story! There’s a synergy between stories here that’s close to the level you’d normally find in a remake.
But both films are also about time. Bond and Maverick both enter the frame in these stories surrounded by challenges about their age. Is there a place in the 21st century for a Cold War hero? Will the old ways be erased entire by technology? Combined with automation threatening to take over their positions or, worse, those positions simply being deemed unnecessary outright and erased entirely, both of these heroes have something to prove: that there is a place and need for what they do, that it MUST be done by a human, and - most of all - that they are THE best man for the job regardless of how many birthdays they've had. They answer a challenge that they might be better off retiring with a resounding “absolutely not.”
But is Top Gun Maverick merely a vehicle to explore a bit about Tom Cruise? Or does it take a page out of the James Bond franchise to explore the relevancy of national heroes in today's age? Is Skyfall just an elaborate celebration of a half-century of the cinematic James Bond? Or is it an affirmation that technology and time might march on endlessly, but human resolve and heroism will never fall to either? Well, buckle up, because Griffin (@griffschiller) is going to explore how Skyfall inspired Top Gun Maverick, how Top Gun Maverick and Skyfall are the same movie, why Top Gun Maverick works, why top gun maverick is perfect, and why Top Gun Maverick is actually a James Bond movie. Enjoy this Top Gun Maverick video essay, James Bond analysis, and Top Gun Maverick analysis!

Skyfall is a good movie. However, in the complete Craig canon, I believ personally that its story is too early. We're just on movie number 3, right after Bond finished wrestling with the elements that makes the foundation of who he is a as an operative, and we're already hitting the "too old for this sh!t" beat. I think we should have had a more classic Bond movie between QoS and Skyfall. One where he's at the top of his game, between a reckless and freshly disappointed rookie and a grizzled veteran hanging on for dear life. His own Tomorrow Never Dies, if you will.
@FilmSpeak
@FilmSpeak 2 года назад
That's totally fair and honestly in an ideal scenario, yeah we get that bridge between Quantum and Skyfall. I guess technically you could argue it's the game Blood Stone, but we deserved a proper film. Nevertheless, I think Skyfall still works for me.

In my opinion, Bond's place in Skyfall isn't so much about the continuity of Craig's Bond, but more about Bond's character as a whole. A character that's been around for 50 years (at the time of Skyfall) and now questioning if we need a character like Bond in modern times. All the Easter eggs/callbacks in Skyfall pretty much show the passage of time for Bond's character in general rather than just do it for nostalgia's sake.

Agreed, it made his movies feel inconsistent because on the very next movie there was no mention or display of his age hindering him and he was practically in his prime again.

Absolutely right that the too old for this shit Schick was premature within the Craig Canon but I think that story was as much about carrying the weight and legacy of a 50 year old franchise

I feel like where those themes are prevalent and at the forefront of Skyfall, they are secondary in Maverick. The theme in Maverick is more his development and growth as a character. All of the other stuff takes a back seat to that. He does suffer loss in Iceman. But it is a personal loss and something he has to overcome within himself and face his fear of losing Rooster and ultimately deal with the reality that this is a part of life that he has been using flight and pushing the boundaries as a means to escape from those realities. His growth comes in facing those fears. The themes of man versus technology and Associated propaganda are secondary and are only there to serve those aspects of the story and Maverick's character.
@rcbmmines4579
@rcbmmines4579 2 года назад
Agreed. Maverick’s focus is more on the personal and emotional aspects. His grief from Goose’s death still present and how it relates to his strained relationship with Rooster, Goose’s son, who himself wishes to be acknowledged as a great pilot that’s the core of the film’s story. In Skyfall on the other hand, there is no new next generation successor for Bond. No Time To Die played with it but not nearly as well IMO.

This comparison is wild, but they are interesting complements of each other. Both reflect and celebrate their countries in very different ways, while also doing and striving for different stories and tones. I never really thought about these two films that way, but they would make a pretty fun double bill.

@FilmSpeak

hahaha that's for damn sure! But that depiction of getting older and still managing to triumph, that spirit to endure is why Bond's victory is so powerful at the end of the film.

Skyfall feels more like new vs old and man vs time, whereas I saw Maverick as being about humanity and creativity being irreplicable. Maverick (IMO) is a metaphor for filmmaking, in that Tom Cruise isn't against 'new technology' (as the first scene shows) but is more focused on making sure the men and women in the plane know that they are what matters, not the technology. The fight between actors/auteurs and IP, the creativity that low-tech births and the easy shortcuts that come with high-tech.

The extract from Tennyson that M reads at the inquiry is the perfect summation of Skyfall's themes and messages. While Bond may not be the infallible hero he once was, and his skills have been weathered down by the passage of time and the increased prominence of technology in the modern world, his willpower, determination and refusal to give in is what makes him a compelling hero. It's a really powerful and poignant message, the perfect way to commemorate the series' 50th anniversary

100% and the way it’s cut with Bond running to catch up to Silva only to arrive too late but nevertheless turn the courthouse to his advantage with the fire extinguishers is beautiful. It’s honestly my favorite sequence in the entire film that speaks to the character on such a deep level.

"Tho' much is taken, much abides; and though We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." Skyfall: James Bond = King Arthur? The place of tradition in the modern world in one of the many themes and ideas within the 007 film “Skyfall”. It really feels like a statement about modern Britain, an idea that is very prominent the Ian Fleming James Bond book. “Skyfall” really is in many ways is the sequel to “Casino Royale” that “Quantum of Solace” was not and I think the poem speech from M really does sell that idea for me. Sir, the Tennyson is the necessary for us to understand the subtext of the film but for these corresponding details: The film is undeniably about selling Britain and its ideals and Mendes emphasises how 007 is the best of Britain has to offer by drawing a parallel between Britain best most modern hero with perhaps our most ancient hero from legends, King Arthur. Tennyson in his 'Idylls of the King' organised the Arthurian legend and “Skyfall” is effectively enduring the tale of Arthur when he returns, when England needs him most. The pre-title sequence is the Malory's (does that name ring a bell from the movie?) Le Morte d'Arthur, the story of how Arthur is deceived by a woman, badly injured in action and takes a leave of absence which leads to many presuming he died in the lake. During the titles Bond undergoes a symbolic Christian rebirth (a motif that is also present in “Casino Royale”), time then passes and when Britain needs Arthur/Bond again and so he returns as legend proceeds him to be. The latest enemy is once again Mordred (Silva) about whom legend is noticeably ambiguous of the familial relationship between he and Arthur. Thus we have lots of references to M as their joint (metaphorical) mother that gives the film a somewhat nature vs. nurture undertone to it, (both men are orphans, Arthur also had a fostered upbringing), the Bond girl Severine, the woman both Bond and Silva share is also an orphan. Further, Bond is revealed to have a birth mother with a Spanish maiden name, suggesting a further ahem, Bond with Silva. The Merlin figure is of course Q. I don't believe a director as well-read as Mendes would include these details/imagery/language by accident. The goal is to level Bond decisively in the practise of British heroic sacrifice (Tennyson also of course wrote The Charge Of The Light Brigade) and so upraise him from the mundane into the legendary. These elements incorporated in the subtext will be registered in the audience's mind whether they realise it or not, they will be familiar with the basic elements of Arthurian legend but not necessarily identify them as such in Skyfall but the film will benefit from the cultural echoes regardless. Yes this is what Joseph Campbell was writing about in The Hero With a Thousand Faces, but what Mendes does is employ the theory to wed Bond to Arthur for Bond's benefit, the movie's benefit and for the audience's benefit.

At least Top Gun Maverick wasnt boring at times. It was so fucking fun, entertaining, enjoyable, engaging and also touching and can make cry easily. I loved it, I have watched 4 times this year. Meanwhile the other is still a great movie but I have watched only 3 times since 2012
@FilmSpeak

Well I mean I would just say that the frequency of which you watch a particular film doesn't necessarily equate to the quality you know? Like obviously Maverick's a great film and infinitely rewatchable, but just because Skyfall is a bit more dense, doesn't make it any less good, ya know? Idk if I'd call Skyfall boring either but I mean to each their own!

@@FilmSpeak The story, especially the whole family background and that home-alone ending, that ruined it for me. Sure, it has its great moments and great subtle arcs (like the 'getting old' arc, the 'low tech' arc, those were great by the way. That scene when M reads Tennyson and Bond is running, music rising, etc, my favourite scene, and It worked well for me because of the whole getting-old arc at the beggining). The cinematography is obviously well done by Deakins. Acting is what is has to be. But COME ON, orphan brothers? An orchestrated jail-break that REALLY needs that sweet sweet suspension of disbelief set to full throttle? M making those Home Alone booby traps? COME ON!
