Hop 19 in the Top Gun program - Multiple aircraft multiple bogeys. Two F-14 Tomcats (Maverick & Goose plus Hollywood & Wolfman) go up against two A4 Skyhawks piloted each by Jester and Viper. The hop starts off on the right foot but Maverick's over eagerness teaches him a valuable lesson: Never EVER leave your wingman!

Most jet fighter dogfights wouldn't be like this. Especially these days, but great memories of an Iconic 80's movie.

Iceman and Slider lost to Viper and Jester that day too, if it had been a real dogfight, pretty sure that Maverick would get court martial, but that's only my opinion... At least he didn't steal two F-16 loaded with real ordnance and planned with a Colonel and a bunch of teenage kids to bomb a foreign country air base and destroying an oil refinery while being at it...

Actually pretty much everything was shot in camera with real jets. The only time models were used was in the final dogfight when stuff had to go Boom. Edit: and a couple of other scenes when there were numerous jets and doing crazy loops..I have to double check..And yes,I concur! when the models did show up, it was seamless!

@@PrometheusOfVideos There's more miniature effects in Top Gun than you think. Its just a testament to how good they look. They were used to plug holes when Tony Scott couldn't get everything he wanted, tracer fire the flat spin etc and yes explosions.

@@purefoldnz3070 Wow, well I'll defer to you for any special effects for Top Gun 😀 (I've also been up all night so i'm a bit loopy, no New year's partying just wonky sleep) I've only seen bits & pieces of behind the scenes of Top Gun. I vaguely remember models being blown up but wow, it's had me convinced all these years. Thanks for sharing!

Back in the mid 1980s i took a film class and the professor was the co-worker author of Top Gun. He told us about how he wrote in Michigan on his computer and his writing partner was in California and they would work on the script and then electronically "send" the script to my the other and then back and forth and so on.

@Bradikal61 I'm actually watching the Top Gun documentary and I'm sure I see the people you're talking about. Was Jim Cash your professor? He taught at Michigan State University. Jack Epps Jr Epps moved to Santa Monica. They collaborated via computer and wrote the script for Top Gun in 1986 according to Wikipedia.

A little over 10 years after this movie was made, the scene where the F-14's engine flames would not make sense as the F-14B and D had new engines, the same engines as those from the F-16C.

In reality, the F14 would have phoenixed the A4 out of the sky BVR, but that is nowhere near as much fun to watch.

But that's exactly why "top gun" was started, as pilots had got too reliant on missiles (as explained by Viper on day one)

Stop uploading videos with black bars, it's idiotic. Our computers/tv's/phones will make the black bars automatically, all you're doing is making the image tiny for people who actually cinematic ratio screens
