This movie really doesn't work without giving a darn about Goose. Anthony Edward's is in the most unappreciated role in history and really proves his acting chops by making you care about a guy who's in a quarter of the movie!!! I know I'm not the only one who like Goose more than Maverick.... Either that, or I have a subliminal man crush on Anthony Edward's!!!

I was stationed at NAS Miramar in the Navy and did a cruise on that aircraft carrier when they filmed this movie. The bar scene with the piano was filmed 2 blocks from my apartment, and I got to meet Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan. You wouldn't have even known they were actors in the movie. They come across as good neighbors that you meet when you move into a new town. The Black Porshe that Kelly McGillis drives in the film belonged to my commanding officer and he auctioned it off soon after the film came out. LOL. He had the black one, a white one and a red one. He gave them the choice of which one they would like to use in the movie. The Tower fly by scene was filmed on a Sunday and they flew the Tomcat past the Tower about 9 times to have enough takes to pic from. We were out working on planes and wondering what the hell was going on because they were flying slow circles around the airfield, but then hauling ass by the Tower, which is a no no in real life, but then we were told that they were filming it for a movie. Good times, and a long time back now. I also got to meet Greg Boyington at an airshow on that base, and really enjoyed that as I grew up watching Black Sheep Squadron.

Even in training, freak accidents can still happen. When pilots eject they experience almost 10Gs of velocity. When Goose’s head hit the canopy, he suffered head trauma and his neck snapped; he died instantly. His death is one, I admit, I still can’t get over. Many a grown adult has broken down hard at that one moment. Letting Goose’s dog tags fly was a way of Maverick finally letting go.
@Nghilifa
@Nghilifa 2 года назад
It's much more than 10G, The F-14 didn't have a G-limiter (since it was all analogue) and airframes have been known to have had 10 and even 12Gs put on them during BFM. An ejection is much more violent, and depending on the velocity of the Aircraft when an ejection is initiated, the forces acted upon the pilot/crew can reach as high as 20Gs.
@NocturnEternal

@@Nghilifa Thank you for this. I wasn’t sure the exact amount but I knew it was about 10G easy.

6 vs 1 seems crazy, but in WWII there was an American P-51 pilot who saw a formation of nearly 50 German fighters gathering up below him to make a head on pass of the bomber formation he was escorting. He was on his own and dove straight into the middle of them. The aggressive attack caused the German pilots to panic and scatter, which spared the bombers. The pilot survived and was awarded the Medal of Honor. Was a story told in the book “Masters of the Air”
@orangeandblackattack
@orangeandblackattack 17 дней назад
Thank you for posting that encounter. It was an example of what a great pilot does. Those bombers were top priority and he probably knew he would go down at some point..but if just long enough employing chaos could spare at least half that bomber wing, that's what you gotta do. 'Masters of the Air' is a great book!

One of my favorite things I learned about this movie from TV Tropes: as Radio Intelligence Officer, Goose would NOT have had a Polaroid camera in the cockpit, he'd have had an Air Force issue intelligence camera, and if he didn't get a shot of a new model of "enemy" plane in such a situation, he would have dramatically failed at his job. "I feel like they're all pretty arrogant." Which is exactly why the "Top Gun trophy" is invented for this movie, there's no such actual thing. Because if you encourage these guys to compete, EVERYONE IS GOING TO DIE. And anyone else feel like Merlin's in his own movie, "Why Do I Always Get The Broken Pilots?"

One of the reasons that Maverick got in so much trouble was because he went below the 'Harddeck" of the engagement level. The Harddeck is supposed to represent the ground in a real situation. So him trying to explain it away that he only did it for a couple of seconds is like saying "I was fine flying my aircraft under the ground for a couple of seconds." Did Jester break the rules first? Yes. But that doesn't allow Maverick the same luxury.
@theendistheend123
@theendistheend123 2 года назад
wasnt cheating for viper to go below harddeck. it's like calling a draw.
@djsmith2871
@djsmith2871 2 года назад
The claim was Jester lost sight and called knock it off before going under the hard deck ("into the ground"), so for safety reasons the engagement ended before Jester broke the hard deck. Of course we never saw any evidence of this. The real training rule violation would have been Maverick continuing the fight and taking the shot AFTER the knock it off call.

I left for Navy boot camp 26th September 1986. I enjoy the Navy before this movie came out. And I was obsessed with it through the summer before I left. Through the years I've introduced a lot of women to this movie who didn't think they would like it. And they all ended up crying and loving it. I've already seen top gun Maverick three times and I am this many years later just as obsessed. You're going to love it. Basic storyline '80s cheese boy girl story. And some surprises. Something a lot of reactors miss is how Goose dies: he crashed headfirst into the canopy when they ejected (and since the ejection seats are rocket-propelled, he was likely killed on impact, not from blood loss). Pretty brutal scene.

1. An old shipmate of mine was on the Enterprise when they filmed this. 2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash. 3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎 4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a little-known movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT 5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong. 6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone" 7. Goose was Mavrick's RIO (Radar Information Officer). 8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space. 9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called, "Joe vs the Volcano' She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT 10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood(not the pilot). There is AC onboard. 11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV. 12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT. You will be the first. 13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seem like they were practicing.

I would disagree that Goose's death was not Maverick's fault. He flew impatiently, he flew too close and was "clearly" out of control Which was part of the plot, and the plot then needed a catalyst to change him, See if you really break it down, Goose's death was caused by the films director.... 😂

I've seen this movie at least 600 times since I was ten years old and I still cry on that part... the sad part is we lose a lot of military personnel in training accidents...Top Gun was my favorite movie from May 16th 1986 until May 27th of this year. I never thought I'd like the sequel more but Top Gun Maverick truly shows what a dedicated actor, producer & writer Tom Cruise is.

Believe it or not, the Navy only allowed producers to fire TWO missiles during filming, so all of those shots you see are either the same two shots filmed from different angles, or miniatures. They did such a good job with the finished product that the Pentagon wanted an investigation into why they used more missiles than they were allowed. Something similar happened while filming 1980's The Final Countdown...about a nuclear aircraft carrier that gets accidentally swept back in time to the day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. While filming a dogfight between two F-14s and Japanese Zeros (which was really fun to watch), one of the F-14s dives towards the water and apparently recovers just feet above the ocean. The Pentagon was in a bit of a panic over the safety of their pilots until producers explained that they used a depth-of-field technique to make the maneuver look like that, and the plane was never less than 100 feet from the water. Final Countdown was a pretty cheesy film compared to Top Gun, but the all-star cast (Kirk Douglas, Charles Durning, Martin Sheen, Katharine Ross, and James Farentino), along with the use of many types of Navy aircraft, make it a fun movie for a Saturday afternoon.

Short personal story from me... I met my first real girlfriend at this movie. Note, I didn't say I took her to this movie, but I met her there. Back in '86 when this movie first came out in theatres... I was 16 and bored so I went to my local mall (it's a big mall in our nations capital...so not just small mall) and as I was walking around I saw this really cute girl and her friend. So I started flirting from a distance and she was flirting back and we starting this little cat and mouse thing around the mall...just walking around. After about 20 minutes of this I lost them and was unable to find them. Disappointed and still bored, not knowing what to do I went to the theatre in the mall and saw Top Gun was playing. So I decided to watch it. So I bought a ticket and walked into the theatre. As I'm walking down the aisle looking for a seat in a partially darkened theatre I take a seat and then suddenly realize 2 girls are sitting right in front of me. It was the same 2 girls I had been flirting with. Turns out they decided on a whim to watch Top Gun. So, the original Top Gun is responsible for me meeting my first girlfriend. Of course the movie itself is awesome too. As for the new Top Gun movie, I have not yet seen it, and I certainly plan to... but I hear from sources I trust that it does NOT suffer from the same afflictions that most movies nowadays suffer from. Which is why it is doing so well at the box office...and why, it is beating out an MCU movie (the latest Doctor Strange), which it should not be doing... as good of a movie as the new Top Gun is, the fact that an MCU movie isn't doing as well should tell you how badly that MCU movie is doing. Come to think of it, this Top Gun movie is already doing better than EVERY MCU movie put out since End Game.

You NEED to see Top Gun Maverick in the absolute best theater with the best sound you can possible find. I saw it opening weekend. Everyone cheered and clapped after the credits rolled. I saw women break down and cry during the movie. Even I got misty-eyed in a few scenes. Prior to this film releasing, it was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Normally the film critics at that festival are persnickety snobs when it comes to film. It was reported that those who watched the advanced Screening of TGM gave a 5 minute standing ovation at the end. What you need to understand is that several original cast members could not be in this new film. Several have passed on. Val Kilmer (Iceman) almost died a few years ago battling throat cancer. He can no longer speak so he was forced into retirement. But the new movie pays homage here and there to some of the originals. TMG is a MUCH better film than the original TG-86. You'll love it! Just see it before it leaves theaters. There is nothing like seeing a big budget summer blockbuster on the big screen. Don't want to see it on a little computer screen!

This movie is loosely based on a real incident (1986, if I recall?). An F-14 crew moved to within a few meters of a Libyan MiG fighter and snapped a picture, then gave the MiG pilot the finger. This was during the Gulf of Sidra incident when Gaddafi and Reagan were trying to intimidate each other, and a few days later F-14s shot down 2 Libyan fighters that fired on them first.

I've been a private pilot for about 25 years. There's an old adage that says - Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous, but to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect. There's a certain freedom in knowing that you have your fate in your hands and you're up to the challenge. It's not like jumping in the car barefoot and half awake to run down to McDonald's.

Top Gun: Maverick is the best sequel written for the big screen (not a novel or book previously) I've seen in the past 20 years. Story is well done and there's TONS of Easter eggs to keep track of (and it is actually based 30 years after this one), soundtrack is solid (kudos Hans Zimmer for merging themes), cast and acting were great, and of course, real jets and real Gs. The friend's death spurring the hero on their journey is a classic trope. A trope is not a bad thing if used right. Goose's death gives the movie emotional weight that it wouldn't have had otherwise. I don't think Maverick would've matured enough on his own without this tragedy either. He would've kept breaking the rules until he got someone killed (or himself, or both) and kicked out of the Navy.

@@pll9000 That is all well and good...if you look at it from the storyteller’s point of view. But if you look at it from the actor’s point of view...the guy who actually got into Goose’s head space when they were making the movie...you’d probably discover all the frustration that Goose had to put up with this guy. I mean, Anthony Edwards probably played a lot of takes in which he was annoyed with Maverick. The whole bit when “the defense department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid”. And then Maverick promising to do better, but that wasn’t the first time. It probably wasn’t the first time when he pleaded with Maverick earlier in the film “I’ve got a family to think about. I can’t afford to blow this”. So as an actor playing a certain character in the film, maybe Mr. Edwards has a point.

The director decided to make this the final cut ; figuring the puzzled look on the actor/character's face and being at a loss for words in response to the abruptly surprising pronouncement by Mcgillis' character better served reality than whatever snappy reply or retort was written in the script for Cruise to utter.

I will mention this here, too, Addie. BEFORE Top Gun, there was the Macross Saga from 1981. Similar ideas, different stories.

"The Defense Department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid." One of the best lines in the movie. The entirety of the truck driver scene is funny as well.

Sundowner, Goose's Top Gun replacement, was right to urge Maverick to get back into it. When I became a pilot, an older wiser aviator advised me that I was now in a special community that relatively few would ever experience. But there was also inherent, significant risk and hazards. He warned me that if a pilot does not know someone who had died while flying, he just has not flown for very long. That aviator was right. If you cannot handle that, don't climb into the cockpit. If Maverick could not handle Goose's death, he would not be able to handle combat losses. Fight like you train, train like you fight. That is why training is a balance between pushing people and machines to peak performance while trying to keep things safe where you are not regularly killing folks. But flying can be a dangerous world. Of all the friends I have lost while flying, not one has been in combat. I have known guys where nothing seemed to go wrong with the ejection. But for some reason, they were dead by the time they hit the ground or water. But one thing almost all of us have in common. Even if we knew that one day, there would be a flight we would not return from, we would still go up there. That is how much it means to us.

I’m new to the channel and just got to see this reaction to one of my favorite movies of all time. When I was a young Air Force officer, it was amazing the extent to which the culture changed as everyone tried to copy the style and panache of the film. Aviator glasses? Check. Bomber jackets? Check? Call signs in a training squadron, even though we were missileers and not pilots? Check. Addie - you mentioned in your reaction that you planned to see Top Gun: Maverick in theaters. Smart move, as others have commented. But assuming you’ve already seen it, I’m sure that none of your followers would mind you doing a reaction to Maverick, even if it’s not the first time you’ve seen it. I mean, I saw it 6 times in theatre, and stream parts of it almost every day. I absolutely love your reactions for your intelligence, charming emotional responses, and clever wit, all of which i would love to see brought to bear on TG Maverick.

A little late ... Don't worry about Goose's wife. She would have got the dog tags he was wearing. Military folks typically have several sets of tags, the ones Maverick had was one of the spares that came from their room. Someone mentioned tossing them was Mav letting go. Also, it was sort of a ' burial at sea.' Very honorable for a sailor.

I have no clue how many times I've watched this movie over the years. The music still gets me super pumped to this day. Definitely go see the 2nd one, it was also really good. Some people like it even better than this one. Although the original is still my favorite. Edit: oh and like others have mentioned, DEFINITELY go see the sequel in the theaters, especially IMAX if you can. Its 100% worth it. Don't worry about reacting to it for the channel. We don't need to see your first viewing of it at the expense of you missing out on the theater experience; we'll live ;D

Great reaction and a highly entertaining movie! And guess what? The new one is more so IMO I really hope we are going into a little Tom Cruise reaction adventure from you, would really love to see that... All the way from his more dramatic movies like "A Few Good Men", to his action movie series like "Mission Impossible" to even his more Si-Fi ones like "Edge of Tomorrow", "War of the Worlds" or "Oblivion"... Hopefully you can react to some of those that you might not have seen.

If you really want to see the best of the best for real, check out any Blue Angels video. They are the Navy Flight Demonstration team. I believe each pilot has graduated from Top Gun. Many stunts they do at air shows are used in combat. However, accidents do happen and unfortunately we lose an Angel once in a while. During an air show at Beaufort SC, Kevin Davis (Angel #6) went down. Instead of ejecting, he stayed with it to ensure no lives on the ground were lost. RIP LtCol Kevin Davis.

Blue Angels most of the times are pilots with time as Instructor Pilots, usually two cruises with a fleet squadron.Being a graduate of TOPGUN,NSAWC or currently NAWDC is not required. Kevin Davis, Kojak was a Lieutenant Commander.

I always thought the chopper pilots were the craziest. As a minor proof my father was the duty officer one weekend in Maine.The entire east coast was socked in from Canada to Georgia and New York City to Kansas City.Nothing flying except one piper cub.Since the base had the only all weather runway in the world At the time the piper cub was dirrected there.The plane ran out of fuel and crashed.The chopper pilots Volunteered to go searching for the plane!My father told them no I may have one fatality already I don’t need two more.You can go looking for the crash site as soon as the fog burns off in the morning.

Welcome to a 80's classic. Loved your reaction. Don't miss out on Top Gun: Maverick while it's still in the theaters. if possible, then watch it in the largest format (IMAX, Dolby Cinema, lieMAX, DBox) for full effect on a movie that many people feel is even better than the original (myself included). It lived up to, and exceeded, expectations.

This movie was originally going to be more of a war movie but Tom Cruise convinced the studio to tone that down. He wanted something closer to a sports movie, but I'd say it became the prototype for the Hero School trope we love today

One of the most unintentionally funny films of the 80’s, and for more than just the volleyball scene. 1) Biting at the air? 2) The dialogue. 3) How many locker room scenes do we need? 4) The soundtrack. 5) So much simulated sweat!

If you were crying at this one, you'll need to bring some kleenex to Top Gun Maverick. Grown men were tearing up, including me. Also note that aircrew do die in training, leaving family behind, so the loss of Goose was quite realistic. Definitely want to hear your reaction to Maverick - perhaps on a trailer.

Not so fun fact~Flybys were allowed way back in the day. Now if someone did a flyby for whatever reason. The pilot(s) would be kicked out the military. They would make sure that you don't fly anymore at all. If they decide to keep you after the flyby. You will be demoted so far back you will be doing jobs that no one wants to do. You would also be done flying as well. I wouldn't wanna pick either one of those choices...
