Commercial director Mitch Brisker was scouted by Scientology to put them on the map and he did! His Dianetics commercials were a huge hit and mostly responsible for selling millions of copies of the books. They convinced him to go work at Golden Era Productions where he turned around the entire film department and started making good quality work for training and marketing purposes. Shelise shares how she was on set around the same time as an actor in a few Scientology films. Most surprisingly however, is how David Miscavige was envious of the wealth and success of Mormonism at the time, and tasked Mitch with investigating their secrets.

I came back to add this detail to my previous comment and found out that you have already written it. 💚 Shelise really has amazing interviewing skills and her managment of time, the topics and the details are so spontaneous, one hardly notices them. I like the combination of laughter and tears, too - no matter how horrible and heartbreaking the stories are, she somehow always manages to end in an uplifting and cheerful manner. But most of all, I love her sincere compassion and kindness. I believe that so many deeply injured people want to share their stories with her because they feel comfortable with Shelise as a host and a companion. It is not easy going public with all that pain, but some people have the gift of giving one the much needed feeling of safety.

Shelise, I really liked Jonathan's calm presence in this video! He never tried to take over or interrupt you, but his questions, though not many, were really insightful and on point. I like the aura of intellectual strength and knowledge about him and his calmness gives a perfect balance to your bubbly, temperamental communication art. Some people have the ability to shine without a spotlight, out of their own inner source of light and their presence is felt without torrents of unnecessary words. I really liked the dynamics between you two as well, and I am looking forward to more videos with him as a co-host. Back in the late 70s when I was a programmer my boss tried to get me into Scientology. I read Dianetics and I was repulsed. Back in the 80s, I was stuck in a motel in Utah and I read the Book of Mormon and I was equally disgusted. I interacted with Scientology and Mormonism for business over the years and this helped.

Love my mornings with Shelise❤️ And was just watching on Mitch's live last night. You have been my favorite window into the other high pressure groups outside of the Sci's I normally follow. I've recently been diving into Amish strictly from what I first saw here. Hasidic Jews from your shows before that. With Christians, including your ex group, before all that. With the interview of your Mother being a huge highlight. Ever since you and your husband came on my radar through Aaron. You've been the arrow pointing out these high pressure groups to study. And I've been getting an amazing education. Following those interviewed to their channels for more has opened my eyes to something every American needs to know about. It's the only way I can think to stop the abuse going on here. And hopefully they can be stopped around the world. Ever since my journey began on this subject I've been in constant amazement at such abuse. How it's so prevalent and seems nothing is being done to stop it. The child abuse is such a nightmare and is what triggers me. If we can't protect them, what are we doing?

Holy moly I remember his Dianetics ad from when I was a little kid! I could sit and listen to an entire podcast with him, great conversational style when replying to questions and giving just the right amount of supporting material; he's really reminding me a lot of Ron Miscavige when I got to see him once in person. Unfortunately, Ron's since passed away, otherwise I imagine he'd be on here too! (He was David Miscavige's dad who escaped, great story if anyone wants to dive into it.)

It's so telling how many people's stories who joined cults as adults are almost the same. Someone found them in a very vulnerable situation, offered them community and support and then taught them to prey on others with the same issues. And yes not only on tiktok but its becoming common for authors to be interviewed by RU-vidrs who are fans of their work or similar books it works. Watching someone who got to interview Joe Abercrombie who she'd fangirled over for years, try not to just squeal the whole interview was amazing

Great job. You are changing the way people view things. Once upon a time we would think how do they get sucked into cults, but it’s no different to how do they do that to someone when they know how it feels. Being a person that came from and abusive father that thought that’s the only way to keep kids in-line or he was just a spoiled brat and didn’t like that we did pretty much what wanted. My brother molested me and my sisters. I am thankful that you are speaking out and allowing victims to have a none judgemental person to talk to, I would never do to my kids or anyone what was done to me, I just think how could you wreck someone else’s life like that. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

You think they weren't trying to recruit you? They were targeting young, new, beautiful actors, always giving auditions, feeding them well, paying well, running the show efficiently and effectively, and testing how comfortable you are following unusually strict boundaries. So 10 years down the road when you're an established actor and they pop back into your lives, you only have fond memories.... The productions aren't only propaganda, they an investment in the next generation of stars

They weren’t doing it in an obvious way. Whereas, back when I was joining a background talent agency, we had to wait in a huge line and Scientologists were going up and down handing out flyers targeting actors, saying they had the keys to us becoming stars. That, was clearly a recruitment.

Back in the 80s. Scientology had a cult vibe and those personality tests were everywhere. When I was in college. I was skeptical, but curious, and signed up for a "free evaluation" at one of those centers. The interviewer was a nice young man, and we were having a nice conversation (I'll talk to anyone--- except Jehovah Witnesses. I did ONCE and they kept coming back!). Eventually, I told him about a recent death in the family, and was getting emotional. That's when the pitch began and he started to talk about how much Scientology could help me. I tried to gracefully extract myself, but he grew more insistent, saying I was obviously a mess because I cried in front of a stranger ( not the first or the last time). I stood up to go, and he was mad because I wasted his time. He scowled at me and said "Would you at least buy the book!"

Sea Org member have a number of different jobs, from cleaning to managing the whole structure of Scientology. They have statistics to unrealistically beat every week and they get in trouble when they don't. 😊

I have never been in a cult but I watch your show to educate myself about how this happens. For the 1st time ever I heard your guest speak about a trigger he had as a result of being in scientology that I identify with due to a very difficult time in my life. Even though my loved ones accepted this trigger I had as real & supported what I had to say I had never actually heard of another human being triggered by the same thing as I was. I have no idea of her married name, but Valerie Haney is the one who escaped in the boot of the car, and is now suing scientology and David Miscavige, and she was the casting director at Golden Era. I’d assume she’s not doing many (any?) interviews until her lawsuit is over, but if anyone can confirm Light was her married name it was her you were emailing with and it would perhaps be a dynamite interview for you to do!

That would be very interesting if it was her. I haven’t heard that connection from former Scientologists who knew I was an actor there but I could look into it.

@@CultstoConsciousness Yes, it seemed odd that Mitch & Claire didn’t say anything about Valerie, perhaps there are two Valerie’s in casting at Golden Era but it’s a bit of a coincidence! I know Val Haney still does, or did at least, casting as her profession after escaping, so it was definitely her ‘thing’, alongside working for Leah Remini for a time I think. Maybe it is just a coincidence, but it’s a pretty big one if so!

This was actually a nice change of pace. The exploitation is a constant, but Mitch seems to have come out on the other side with net positives. Under any circumstances, when you help people, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Mitch, you made the most of a very bad situation, honing your talents, leaving your addictions and helping others to hone their own talents so that they were better able to survive inside and thrive outside.

I don't know what exists as the hole nowadays, but from the time when Mike Rinder was in, they were mentally tortured to confess to their "crimes" (against Scientology) and turn against each other. I highly recommend the movie Going Clear, it's on RU-vid.

I have not been to the LDS church in more than a decade and they keep following me no matter where I move. The missionaries show up on my doorstep, despite my husband scaring them away. They found me on Facebook and send me messages, they send me written letters, etc. I can’t get rid of them lol.

It’s very therapeutic. Also, sometimes it’s easier to share your story when you can put all your thoughts down in a concise way instead of recounting every time someone asks. You can say, “check out my book!” We also feel that exposing traumas within these groups can give other survivors courage to find healing themselves.
