I think that to be at an advanced level in a language one probably needs a vocabulary of at least 10,000 words and maybe as many as 15,000. It takes a long time to acquire that vocabulary even if you are diligent and determined. So some of the intermediate plateau comes from impatience, a lack of understanding of how long it takes to build that vocabulary. You also need to tackle your weaknesses head on as you are doing now. Also keep in mind that a B2 level is very, very good. Most languages learners don’t get to B2. Don’t forget how much you have already accomplished.

Okay but the conversation between you and your teacher is so true~ You are literally starting from scratch with no reference points when you move abroad 🫠 this year I’ll need to file Korean taxes and I have no idea how I’m supposed to do that ☠️☠️

Right?! Taxes are especially scary, it’s so confusing and it’s so hard to even figure out where to get help?

I love that you're confronting this, Shea. You're completely correct and all of us language learners experience the plateau. I also utilize Italki and am consistent with it 5 days a week. I firmly believe that it is an incredible tool in addition to watching TV series/ RU-vid videos, listening to Podcasts, writing and READING! Reading has been so great for me in retaining information and understanding how the language flows, which you know and talked about in a previous video. Keep up the great content!

My resolutions for this year is very details but the first rule which I want to do is "NO ROSH". I want to do "that, that and that one too" but "no rush. you can try but no rush" :) if we're talking about languages I have my own ways to help myself like watching streams on the Twitch, speak with people on the Discord, journaling, 2-3 apps to English, read out loud etc :) we will see how it could be work ^^ It's a pleasure to listening you, how you speak in Italian

Thank you for this video. I really want to use a speaking app like iTalki, but I hold myself back through worry and anxiety. I don't know why. I spoke Italian a lot in Sorrento this year and was able to understand nearly everything said back to me. I am motivating myself to study more and try different things. Speaking much more is definitely a goal this year. You and Olly Richards are by far my favourite language RU-vidrs.

I was like that too, and sometimes still am. It’s scary! But at least when you’re talking with a teacher, they’re there to help you and they’re always really patient and encouraging. I actually feel more confident talking to my italki instructor because I know I will make mistakes but she will help me. I get more nervous talking to a native Italian here in Italy because I get this feeling like I need to be “perfect” when speaking to them. But yes, definitely try to get more speaking practice this year! Thanks for watching ☺️

Tandem is amazing for practicing with natives! It's free and basically like clubhouse/chat rooms for conversation!

hey Shea👋 thank you for your youtube contents. a real pleasure 😊 Actually, I hope you can help me on my points that I can’t figure them out alone (i’m still thinking about it in circle and doesn’t help. As a french woman, from me the most difficult are 1: speaking due to every words or expression I learned before don’t appear during my calls , only dull and repetitive oones only come and that’s too redundant.however I particularly have at least one call per day. so strange. 2: Listening 😭 still struggling with music and tv show while i immerse myself into it😭 and news omg the worst haha 😂 and the thing what made me feel so badly down/ disappointed of me is when i asked mu little sister to listen to a music and she recognized more words by ears I did, even though she doesn’t learn English at all. I have been learning english alone almost 3 years and my pride just taken a hit 😂. 3: stick phrases in my mind. i know the issue i have is the willingness of write down every single words i can’t understand and in fact i do that so far but after that i get overwhelmed and at the end of the day to go over them i don’t have energy anymore and fall asleep 😭 i love using associations to learn the context and also grammar or anything because it’s innovative and creative but i don’t know why my brain stick more words i have barely tried to remember or going over and those i have tried so hard they didn’t stick in my fried chicken brain at all 😭 why and how is it possible. 4: I also have an issue with understanding a context even in my native language, a few weeks ago my coach and I had to watch a stand-up comedy , I get it more or less but by the time she asked me to explain it couldn’t even some extracts. i felt so shame for. 😅 she actually didn’t do much more because i wasn’t in the capacity of understanding it. 5: when i learn a language i love learning their cultures so i watch videos, podcast, documentaries and so on, unlucky idk why i forget everything i learned and it’s exhausted and a waste of time to go back on something you have already learned or watched before. 6: i can’t translate Fr->En and En->Fr , sometimes some relatives aks me to translate something but i stay speechless unfortunately what a bummer. nevertheless i can definitely have a friendly conversation because i had an American partner and we really enjoyed calls together , she was really diligent. i was hoping that you or anyone could clear my light up on some of my weaknesses. i hope i’m not bothering people and i’m also in a huge lack of confidence (a lot of people tend to notice that) thank you again and keep it up with your videos i like them. Oh and I have forgotten to tell you if i’m so in rush and hard to myself it’s because i working on becoming an english coach and homework assitant in english as well (i love english grammar) so that’s why for me English learning is very serious , efficient and not the immersion like babies do. yes immersion but we have capacity of acquiring the language more efficiency. thank youuuuu 😊

Do you have a video about getting back into a language? I haven’t practiced Spanish in sooo long. I was advanced at one point. I can still understand and read Spanish but when It comes to speaking I can’t remember any words cuz they’re so far in the back of my mind even though I know it’s there! But when I try picking up a study book I’m always like “oh I already know this it’s too easy I’m not learning” because I did learn it at one point lol

I know what you mean! I do have a video, but I made it 3 years ago so maybe my advice has changed since then. But I think it still has some good advice! I can make an updated version, that could be a good video idea 🤔 Here’s the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bg0OIISJvLs.htmlsi=j53DJ8YfwZq-U2qh

Just be understandable is enogh. A challange for you go out do errors in your speaking proposital, and laugh of yourself. relax your pronunciation are sensantional Here on ytb is your workplace, never stop it, step by step list your ideas take a help with the AI and go there, ok? Quello che ti ho scritto nel commento del video precedente di un'esperienza che ho sempre sognato di soggiornare all'estero lavorare ma non ho ancora avuto l'occasione Io penso adesso magari mi farò qualche anno sabbatico all'estero ma però il problema è che io in Italia sono anni che lavoro a stipendio
