Like the Nokia/Blackberry-to I-Phone moment, or VHS/Beta to online home movie upheaval, the truck world is poised for revolutionary change, and next gen EV trucks are just around the bend! Please share your views and input on where you think the next gen ev trucks are going, and any tech or functional changes I might have missed. Keep the comments comin' !

Your quick overview of the technologies on the horizon for EV pickups is excellent. I'm not sure all of it will make the "next" gen, but I do expect to see most of these innovations hitting the market over the next ten years.

Thanks for the insight! It's exciting to know that we have only just started this ev truck journey. We're kind of at a VHS/BETA home movie point in the whole scheme of things, or the Nokia/Blackberry to Apple moment :-) Should be a wild ride to see how this develops!

I'm looking forward to seeing different sizes of EV pickups hit the market. The current EV pickups are pretty close to the current full sized ICE trucks, it would be good to see smaller vehicles, possibly even ones that are close to the old mini-trucks, like the GM S-10/S-15 or the original Ford Ranger. I think Canoo's cab forward pickup would fit in this niche and the Telo even smaller.

Yes! I would love a ranger-type, 6' box ev workhorse. I think either Ford or Rivian might be the first to break this ground. Fingers crossed!

What's keeping me from getting an Electric Pickup? Two things: 1) My current car has about 28,000 miles on it, so replacing it with an EV doesn't make sense. 2) I'm really not into big vehicles, the Ford Lightning, Rivian RT1 andTesla Cybertruck just don't work for me. Something closer to the original Chevy S-10 or the new Ford Maverick could actually convince me to give e-trucks a try. The intriguing thing is that if one works toward a cab-forward design, like the Canoo or the Telo, you could combine decent interior space with a useable bed in a small pickup. It will be interesting to see what manufacturers will cook up in the next few years.

I actually tried to order the Canoo truck, but not possible even as a pre-order in Canada - to replace my aging Ranger. Tailosive did some excellent YT videos on the Telo. I just hope either one survives long enough to make it to market. I think what Ford has up its sleeve with its T3 project will fit right in our wheelhouse. The biggest damage we can do is replace perfectly good vehicles with yet another factory build. I wish more people considered things the way you have. I also agree with your assessment of the small truck segment. This is a huge void in the ev space that needs to be filled. Thank you for the feedback!

That Ram "range extender" so called "solution" was GM's exact strategy after the crushing of the EV1 had blown up in their face, and let them into bankruptcy. Here's a direct quote of what the critics were saying from early 2009, regarding their new "solution" -- the Chevy Volt: "critics see the car as basically another half-step in a company prone to half-steps. They point to the Volt's internal-combustion gasoline engine - dubbed by GM as a "range extender," meant to supply electricity to the motor after the vehicle has exhausted its 40-mile range on battery power alone." Sound familiar? How did that work out for them? All while Tesla was already forging ahead with full EVs.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 3 месяца назад
Nicely researched and so true! I don;t think this is the right path but many truck folk think it is the best way forward. I think it might be redundant and outdated about as fast as the Volt was.

I wonder what "never before seen" tech ford is coming out with. Tesla already has drive by wire, GM and Tesla alfready have all wheel steering, GM has trailer capable hands free driving, GM has the 800v charging speeds, all double has home batteries

@truckedupevs 3 месяца назад
Should be interesting. Yeah, most ev truck makers have covered so many innovations, I can't think of any 'never before seen' things either - but I thought the same when I owned my Blackberry smartphone a month before the i-phone rolled out... :-)

@@truckedupevs Well in the Blackberrys defence, the only thing revolutionary about the Iphone was its marketing. All the tech it had was pre existing, touch screens, internet access, it just put it in a cleaner box. Maybe ford will just put together the drive by wire of the Tesla, all wheel steering, and the GM hands free trailering but in a cleaner box.

Yup. That is something Apple HAS excelled at :-). I'll give Ford some innovative creds even though they're not exactly breaking moulds. I own a Lightning as you likely know, and I have to say that it really led with the frunk approach, which everyone else followed, along with the Pro Power Onboard, which everyone has copied, including the V2H backup power, three years ahead of the next competitor. It was the first light duty to break 2.5k lbs payload, and 1st to include a physical and innovative rear locking diff and independent (and frickin' massive) rear control arms and suspension. I think we'll see aerodynamic leads, a true cab forward truck, along with massive work application storage, power, air compressor (with actual capacity), and possibly some range surprises. The work they're doing with the truck's heat pump these past two years is leading everyone else - currently - so yeah, I think it will be a combination of stealing and packaging, and zigging when everyone else zags. Thanks for the awesome feedback! @@sonofagun1037

Hi have F-250 for one reason towing my 35 foots fight wheels at 13000 pounds. No actual EV truck is able to town that for a long ride of 2500 kms to Florida. Yes you can say stop and recharged every 250 kms but where whit my fight wheel, I while have to onhoock at most of the charging point because they mostly not drive true. Actaually the only option is the RAMCHARGER but only next year because y have a gaz range extender. Hand I dont no if you could fit a fight wheel ont the box.

All excellent points, and ones that i have highlighted in my other videos. The industry is getting there, but the genius who decided to ignore a century of gas station functionality by placing chargers the way they are now might have to reevaluate their resume moving forward. :-) I'm with you, Luc, although I worry that the tech on both EV trucks and the infrastructure is changing at such a breakneck pace, I would be concerned about how long the Ramcharger will hold up to time.

Where is all the magic electricity it into our vehicles in a timely manner. What if I live in the country and not having an EV charger nearby?
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 3 месяца назад
If you live in the country, I presume you have a house. If you have a house, simply hook up a NEMA 14-50 outlet to your breaker panel on a 50a circuit, and charge to full every day at home, which is what over 80% of all ev owners do. Unless on a road trip or living in an apartment or condo in urban areas where a personal charger isn't an option, most people aren't using the DC fast chargers regularly. I live in a more remote part of Canada and the only 'fast chargers' are at around 50kw, not much faster than home. Since October, for work and pleasure, I use only my house to charge and have never had an issue. Besides, all the Super Chargers will be available to all make and models within the year (Ford and Rivian already are), and even in less dense areas, if road tripping, a person can find a fast charger. I hope this helps.

@@truckedupevs the infrastructure won’t sustain the increased demand. Ev’s are a very long way from practical. We generate electricity with coal and natural gas primarily so I’m not sure where the savings are Not to mention the machinery and energy required to mine the minerals for batteries. Which currently comes mostly from, wait for it, China And the batteries are a fire hazard, and can’t be recycled so what do we do when lithium runs out.

...said the horse and buggy owner to the 1915 Model T Coupelet owner. 🙂 Hey, I know this is what is fed via the media, but the actual data says the opposite. The number one producer of electricity in Canada and Europe is renewables, so yeah, no. My entire province produces 100% of its electricity via renewables. Even the US now produces over 20% of its energy from such sources according to the DOE, and it is growing at an exponential rate and expected to top 40% by 2030. Basically every part of your statement is largely inaccurate, including the old, tired mining trope, with over 30% of batteries now produced with zero cobalt. Oil, gas, and coal do a massively larger amount of extraction and damage than li batteries. @@derekdupler

I'm kinda impatient. My 2008 ranger needs to be replaced soon. I need a bigger truck with a long box and a super cab. Waiting for someone to make something useful.
@whidbeyhiker4364

"Useful" is subjective. A better concept would be "waiting for something that meets my needs" which is completely understandable. It sounds like my Rivian would be useless to you but it meets my needs.

I get it. I really needed a long box for my day gig, but when my 2007 Ranger gave up the ghost with a failed transmission (which was revived and is back on the road by the new owner and fellow RU-vidr!), I took the plunge anyway. I lost about 15cm bed length but gained depth, width, and capacity, so it worked out in the end. But if I had a choice, I know what I would be driving too! Thanks for the comment!

I do more off-roading in the summer to access hiking trails and I would luuuuuuurv the Rivian R1T in my driveway! I would destroy it at work, unfortunately, but that settles it - I need a fleet! :-) Know any generous sponsors?

If you have the means, the newly released Chevy Silverado RST EV (videos just dropped yesterday) sounds like what you're looking for. Its mid-gate opens to offer a bed well over 10 feet. Of course, if you own a business that depends on pickups, then it's a no brainer. Here's some quick math: If on the course of your business work week using your heavy duty work truck you're on the road a lot and spend, lets say, $250 per week ($1,000 per month) in gas or diesel, that's $12,000 per year. If you charge at home using cheap overnight electricity for let's say $40 per week (2 full home charges) that's $1,440 per year. Meaning a saving of $10,560 per year over gas or diesel. Times 5 years, that a total savings of $52,800 dollars. If you extend that to 8 years (the length of the warranty) that's $84,480 dollars in fuel saving alone. That's most of the cost of this truck. And that's not even counting if you have solar at home or work, or that's a total savings of $96,000. Then that's almost the entire cost of this truck. Add to that the savings in maintenance of no oil changes, no brake work (with regen, the brakes are not used, saving them wear and tear), a possible sparkplug and cabling replacement over that 8 year span, etc. And all the savings of not having to use a generator for your high power work tools. And let's not even get into powering your whole house for a week or two with it's monster battery.

A battery with only 1000 cycles if charged just once a day would only last 2.7 years. To be warranted 15 years, it would require many more cycles.
@whidbeyhiker4364
@whidbeyhiker4364 3 месяца назад
a charge cycle is from 0-100% which almost never happens, which is why there are teslas out there with well over 300,000 miles. Please, bring on your next imaginary problem that isn't a problem. Can't wait.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 3 месяца назад
Actually no, That isn't exactly how cycling works, but it is something to keep in mind. It is rating a 0~100 charge rate at full DC speeds, and most charges are on AC Level 2s and only top ups. I think the point is that with evs already exceeding 300K miles or 480 kilometers, at a cycle rate much lower than this, the worries of longevity no longer apply.
