I've got this same meter and it's awesome. At first, I double checked it against other meters until I trusted it. Now it just works. Easy and accurate.

I've had this Topdon ArtiBattery 101 for about 5-6 years. In that time I have used it hundreds of times on my kid's cars, my wife's car and my cars. It's one of my favorite go-to tools that always gives me the info I need. I also take it into the store to pick out the best new battery on the rack before buying one. LOVE IT.

They are not accurate. It told me to replace my battery 2 years ago. It still starts my car fine.
@etow8034
@etow8034 2 года назад
A car will start with just 70A at 22C, but that doesn't mean the battery is fine if you want to start it at -18C !
@Mickytdi
@Mickytdi 2 года назад
@@etow8034 My battery is reading a lot higher than 70 A 😉. It starts perfectly in freezing conditions. I have seen reading differences of up to 100A in different temperatures. It should be a bit more accurate than that. Somedays it tells me to “replace” and then other days “ good battery” it can’t make it’s mind up. I do accept my 5.5 year old battery won’t be as good as new but it is still quite capable.

@@Mickytdi If you don't charge or top up your battery once every two weeks in the summer months and at least once a month in the winter months 4-5 years is all that you will get out of your car's battery. Your car's charging system only charges the battery up to 80% at best and with every ignition start you need at least 20 minutes of highway driving to recharge back that amount of capacity. The point here is that the battery is always at a deficient and will decrease with every start.
@Mickytdi
@Mickytdi 2 года назад
@@etow8034 i don’t have to worry about that. My car gets lots of driving. There’s 160,000 miles done in 5 years. My car is a start/stop. The battery is actually designed to stay at 80% charge because of the brake energy recuperation system. It’s sn AGM battery.
@etow8034
@etow8034 2 года назад
@@Mickytdi Of course they are going to say its stays at 80% charge, that is 80% at best case scenario and it will never charge higher than that. If you use the start/stop mode it taxes the battery even more along with a shorter starter life ! The point is doesn't matter how much you drive the battery will only be 80% charge in best case scenario and will be worse if you drive shorter distances with more frequent starts. Most peoples' car batteries are around 12.3V or 65%-70% charged if they don't top up their battery.

Try to test same battery a few times bavk to back...it will give you completely different readings every single time. So unreliable!

Where did you get that little stand? Can you drop a link? Is that what that is a cell phone holder? I like that one and could come in handy if working on your car and you need to reference a video

Would I need a different model for a marine or RV deep cycle battery? Anyone?

Older firmware circa 2018-2020 of the same tester does not show internal resistance, so beware !

Good Video, I like the tester holder! I would not make the decision to replace the battery or not based on this tester. Before testing I'd also clean up the battery terminals since you have corrosion on the negative terminal which could impact your test results. It would be interesting to see the test results on several new batteries to see if there is any variance in the results.

I purchased a topdon similar a few years back. Works for me. If I have a heads up that my battery is in decline I can take care of the issue before it presents a problem.

It would be interesting to run a conditioning cycle with a smart charger and see if the CCA comes up. I have had good luck doing that, but I don’t have a tester to check how effective it was, only that dying batteries have come back to life.

I might do that. The battery from the video is now on the garage floor. I have a Gooloo charger with a conditioning feature. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U5IOfIixTbA.html

You would have to do it more than a dozen times to try to desulfate the plates, but it never really increases it more than 20% at best as the electrolyte has eaten away most of the lead plates.

Very helpful. How did you raise the rpms since you are working under the hood? Does it retain readings?
@Butterfly-iz3nm

This battery is obviously leaking judged by the corrosion coming out of the negative terminal. That combined with the very low cranking amps under load suggest this battery will leave you stranded out in the cold. You can tell by looking at it that it's seen better days.

These are all based on the Motorola/Midtronics PowerSensor testers from the early 90's that the telcos and Ford were using on the production line, but they cost $2500usd back then ! ...LoL

Totally OT, I collect surface gages, and a few other machinist tools. It so happened that many of my dream gages came up for auction in the past few weeks. As I'm cleaning them up right now, I'm reminded how many great American companies are no longer as they were. There's a Brown & Sharpe gage in front of me made in England. Apparently by Moore & Wright. B&S was sold to Tesa in the '80s, which in turn was purchased by Hexagon. At this point, Hexagon own everyone other than Starrett and the Japanese firms. That sucks.

Is it possible for a 4 year old battery to be at 100% battery health (fewer than 5500KM/3417 miles per year). I just purchased this tool and this was the reading. I did it twice. Thanks.
@lastbesttool
@lastbesttool Год назад
It's possible. I suspect a lower use, high quality battery living in an environment with minor temperature swings and recommended care and feeding, all could be well. Many quality batteries could actually measure above the 100% threshold if that was possible.

I bought a BT50. Wanted a new leisure battery so went to local camping shop. They had loads of batteries on their shelves, so I used the BT50 to test them all. Best battery health was 85%. Is 100% unrealistic for a new battery?

Scotty Kilmer has a video expaining why new sealed batteries are less than full when purchased. It has to do with where they are manufactured and time it takes for them to be transported to stores.

The most crucial reading is the internal resistance, once it reads 6mΩ or more the plates are sulfated and the battery is finished !

Nice device, but for initial testing only. From my experience i'd use it only to distuingish dead - flat batteries from the ones that still 'have something on them' If you wish to check your battery's capacity or Ah you gonna need a full load, resistive test, that can take some time dependend on the 'juice' left...

Load tests are dangerous and not as accurate as these conductance testers these days. A proper charge/discharge test would over a day to perform with expensive equipment. Those handheld load testers you get for under $50 is not an accurate picture of the battery's true condition.

What's up with the fuzzy battery terminals? No digital device needed,, you failed the visual inspection. Too much energy spent on gadgets ,,, not enough using the tools you were born with.
