Supports my book tinyurl.com/season-on-the-edge. How to catch striped bass on pencil popper plugs. Topwater bass action with stripers hitting pencil poppers.
If you didn't control the line going back on the reel by applying a little pressure with your thumb and forefinger, slack loops would get on the spool because of the rod pumping. This would lead to knots on casts. Holding the line makes sure that the line goes back on the spool smoothly and evenly.
Just popped back on this because a friend wanted the link .... I can't help getting a twinge in the nether regions when I see those lunkers hit! Love this lure.
thank you for the quick response, i will be trying out the tube and worm method trolling, seems like a huge thrill to see that rod slam while enjoying some paddling
Excellent vids - I hate them right now though. I can't wait for winter to end already! CC lures are great, I love adding a small amount of sand to the bottom of it so they weigh more
Hi John, love poppers, but releasing the fish on treble hooks can be a lil messy.... especially in a kayak. Can barbs be removed from treble hooks? Or would that be too easy to shake? (I know you said you remove them from bucktails.) Trying to release without harm. Thanks!
John, would you be able to work that rod effectively while in a kayak, or can you suggest a different rod that would be more suitable for working a pencil while seated?
While using a swivel doesn’t it make popping harder? Sometimes when I use swivel it make my lure not very presentable. Any tips maybe u need a certain length in floro let me no thanks
This is kind of a non related question but I picked up a pack of 6" gulp alive squid for trolling rockfish and long cod on the west coast but still have leftover. So I wanted to know if I would have any use for them her on the east for striper or fluke or whatever else and how would I use them
Great video as always. I've learned to use the bucktail with some confidence by watching your other videos. What tides do you like to fish? high to low or low to high? And do you typically go out dawn or dusk?
Jskinner, im a south jersey dweller and i recently purchased a kayak to take out into the barnaget bay, its not fully rigged for fishing, justmade an anchor trolley and a rod holder. Couple questions, when do the stripers move into the bay in the fall, and also, what should i do to my kayak to make it more suitable for the bay. Thx, im a subscriber
Hey John, I have been bucktailing for a couple of months now i like to do what I like to call surface bucktailing I can bucktail on the surface so i can see the striper bluefish etc. not sure if that will for there i do this off Soomons Island fishing peir south side thanks for all the tips in Bucktailing!
Hey I live in tenafly New Jersey and was wondering if there are any good places for pencil popping within 30 mins thank you very much And if you had to choose one poppet what size and color would it be
hi john i have a few questions i have an extra rod laying around with no reel its a very thin storm rod it is 5' 6" tall (spinning rod) i like using light tackle so i need a reel that can hold about 200 yards of 10 lbs braid if you could give me and suggestions that would be great
+Brandon Byrns yes, in the video he explained when the lurking bass didn't connect with his lure, he presented another lure to the bass. Makes sense to not throw the same bait at the same fish if it didn't bite in the first place. Those TA Clips make it easy.
Hi, sorry if you mentioned this at the beginning, but what time of year was this filmed? Thanks, and thanks for all your extremely helpful and enjoyable videos.
Hey John! I just picked up a penn spin fisher 4500, I was curious on which kind of surf rod you would recommend? I like light, high action rods by the way. -thank you
John, great video. I see that you fish with a Van Staal. I want to get one soon. Do you think the VS200 is more versatile then the VS150? I can't decide which one to get. Thanks
Lamiglass 10' medium action. I don't know the exact speck of the rod. It's custom made and I got it as a trade. Thanks John, I am learning so much from you vids. Very informative and makes fishing a lot more fun.
A bit off topic as this is in relation to your rigged eel video but the comment section is disabled. Out of curiosity do you find rigged eels to be more productive then live or do you feel live will always have the edge over rigged. Just curious on your opinion.
As always thank you for showing us how to fish. Could you please write why one the hand up and what exactly we have to do with the fingers I didnt understand even playing the video multiple times. Im learning english little by little this is why i dont underStand Thanl
It would make sense that this is a dropping tide because the Bass seem to be coming out from the backside of the rocks to engage in after the plug however I'm just guessing . I fish a very similar spot on Cape Cod Bay and float needle fish in between the rocks with moderate success. Now to get a catch on video to show you!
JerseyGreek how do you set up for chunkin bait? I have my main line end with a clip (75LB) then 12"-24" wire leader with #7-8 octopus hook. And a 5-6oz sliding weight. I've heard people using their main line, an Albright knot to mono. You got any tips
Please tell me this is a highlight reel of your day and you weren't getting fish on off of every cast. If that is the case then I'm going straight home and throwing my rod in the water and never fishing again.
