Topwater Tricks For Early Fall

Do Red Hooks, Feathered, Trebles, and different retrieves make a difference? Matt explores these tricks and more as he teaches how to catch more topwater bass this late Summer and early Fall. Do you want to catch bigger bass on top? This will make all the difference!
As Spring turns to Summer the bass become more wary of topwater lures. As Summer fades to Fall it can be downright tough to fool the bigger fish. Making these subtle changes will maximize your opportunities and in some cases, will actually get you more bites.

Last year around Halloween, I went to the dollar store and picked up a few coloured wigs - white, red, orange, green and black - and started making my own feathered trebles out of the material. It made such a difference on my walking baits, it was incredible. Only difficult thing was to get the density right. Too much hair could impede a good hookset. But a little bit of white here, a little bit of red there and you've got yourself the look of a bleeding tail fin. Great tips Matt!

Outstanding advice you and lake fork guy have helped me more then I can explain. I used to bass fish a lot in the 80’s and early 90’s but got injured on the kid in 97 an have not been able to fish until this spring. I sold all my fishing gear and now I’m starting to get some back. Maybe some day when I get better at it I can hook up with one of you guys and fish along side and learn even more. Thanks again for all your help

I did come across a pretty big school yesterday and my buddy and I smashed em on a worm bite. Nothing crazy big but all decent fish and it was so much fun. We doubled up twice and for awhile it was almost every cast we were getting bit. I love it!!!

I've been fishing less over the last 5 or 6 years due to a flood on Lake Champlain the took its toll on my boat and had a beautiful baby girl but anyway I LOVE popper fishing and don't claim to be great or anything but I am better than average on the surface. Favorite bait old diawa popper zero without question for my smallies. One thing I always made sure to do even though I'm not one to change out hooks I used xcaliber rotating trebles on my top water. Never noticed a lower hook up rate but certainly kept more of them on because of them. Try it

I fished a lake that had tournaments. Every weekend from spring till late fall. I would go and sit on the rip rap dam. Fishermen would see me and say hi! Once they said hi. I would just say what you fishing with. They were more than happy to tell me. So when I went fishing on my days off during the week. I would go the opposite way on lures. I would just tear the smallies up. I would get a Rapala shallow diver with a down turned Bill and cast down the rip rap and let it bounce off the rip rap. The smallies would just go crazy. I would have to buy the whole rack of those down hill lures because the bill had a 90 degree bend and after a while the bill would break at the 90. Even with no Bill and bouncing it off the rip rap. They would still go after the small lure. I would change up the salamander color and rig. Texas to Carolina or just float the salamander over grass in front of rip rap dam. Or go live crawdads. Sure miss those days. Make you feel you have something nobody knows. Shawn

The talk about red hooks is interesting. The last two times on the water I’ve out fished my fishing partner with top water baits. I can’t say specifically that it’s because of the red hooks on my bait. I’ve been throwing a plopper with red hooks while my partner has been throwing a Chris Lane Game Changer I believe, with regular nickel black hooks and a rover with regular nickel black hooks. But both times out I’ve been getting bit while he hasn’t. With the variables it could be his bait of choice or perhaps it has something to do with the red hooks. I don’t know....?

Great vid. The little details matter. Makes sense. I was fishing on Monday for river smallmouth and got into an intense top water bite at 1pm in the afternoon with full sun and not a cloud in the sky. It didn't make sense to me, but I kept throwing a Lucky Craft Sammy. Any thoughts on what drove the smallies to behave that way? I didn't see bait fish anywhere. The only thing I could think was that my river is extremely mossed out on the bottom to the point where maybe the fish don't want to look down to eat. I was sight fishing them and the big ones ignored the Nedrig, dropshot for the most part, swim baits, senkos, etc, but they hammered top water.

With the big Bubble Walker, are you guys typically using that particular bait when you want a faster or a slower cadence? I've got one in my box, but I haven't thrown it yet. I didn't realize it was as big as it is when I ordered it, and haven't found myself in the right situation to tie it on....

I am new to fishing. Have a stupid question. How long do you stick with a bait or color before you change when what your using is not working?
@5280Bassin
@5280Bassin 6 лет назад
It's not a stupid question, it's a learning curve. Color doesn't matter specifically, just shading it seems, and that depends on water clarity and cloud cover. A bait you have a lot of confidence in, you can stick with all day (while trying others in between). Otherwise, I try not to stick in an area or a specific bait for more than 15 minutes. If you go to an area where you mark fish, or know they are there and make 15 casts or so with a single bait without a bite, change baits.

I should have watched this before going out to the lake this morning. I was using a dual-prop bait, and I kept missing hook-ups, and I had a few just get off on me. Now that I think about it, that bait has a red hook on the BACK, but not on the front...If I had seen this video first, I would have swapped front and back hooks...would I have landed a few more? Seems possible!

Frogs work great around timber! Work them up and over. I actually like to cast OVER limbs that are just above the water. Drag the frog up onto the limb, then hop it off and either let it sit for a moment or start walking it fast. I've had them eat it as it was falling into the water from the branch.

Jake orr dude just get hudds, glides and wake easy as that, s waver 168 and 200 life trout, hudd 68 perch and trout, Shellcracker G2 or Spro Rat, just go out and throw em, when I fish hudds I target trees and laydown, I cast to structure with my glides and wakes too, you can chuck and wind that works too but isn’t the best, target points, rockpiles, brushpiles etc

Is there a advantage of having a walking bait sit vertical in the water when it’s sitting still or should it lay flat on top when you aren’t applying action ? My preference is laying flat on top but I notice a lot of walking baits sit vertical in the water when they stop the motion is there a advantage or key to this way ?
@5280Bassin
@5280Bassin 6 лет назад
Many will hang tail down, about a 45 degree angle. If you have that feather treble on the back, the feathers will move a little bit just sitting still and that can tease a fish into biting.

From a tournament fisherman myself...Focus on fishing your strengths and keep a log. Being versatile is good, but fish what you have confidence in first and foremost. Just because someone says it should be a good deep bite on ledges doesn't mean you have to try to go fish ledges if you never have before. As for the log, track some basic details. Note every catch, species, body of water, depth, water and air temps, weather conditions, date, bait style and color. After a couple years, you'll notice patterns developing specific to your fishing and your lakes which will help you simplify tackle and locations.

You guys must have some busy lakes over there. In Michigan, they are busy, but usually not a ton of bass fisherman, just tons of jet skis etc....which is equally annoying.
