I will never forget this trip... Almost two years ago I took this train from Toronto to Vancouver and it was simply amazing. Being in a single room, with no distractions, a heater, toilet, sink and my own bed made the trip so accommodating. Waking up in the middle of the night to the moon shining through the northern Ontario pine trees, knowing you’re in the middle of nowhere yet amongst others just makes it much more comforting. I recommend this to everyone, you’ll spend 5 days on this train and you won’t regret a single moment. It will also make you appreciate this country a lot more, we have such a beautiful wilderness that’s still untouched and hopefully it will always stay that way.

Thanks for the memories. A single 23 year old immigrant from England, I took the train in April 1966 to Vancouver (4 days) after a horrible crossing (force 7 gale) , arriving a day late in Montréal and missing a layover night at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Arrived in Vancouver with $400, no job, nowhere to stay. Six months later was in Vernon, BC working for The Bay. Been a Canadian citizen ever since, but living now in Vermont. In those days the train went through Calgary, Banff, the Kicking Horse Tunnels, Rockies, Salmon Arm, Kamloops, Fraser Canyon, Hope to Van.

In 2008 my wife and I took this train when we moved from toronto to vancouver island. Wonderful trip. We did the sleeper class. It was comfortable. The folks in economy were pretty uncomfortable by the fourth day though, and they didn’t have shower access. Recommend sleeper class if you can do it. We took two dogs and two cats with us. The staff was great about it and we could access baggage every 8 hours to take the dogs out to pee. The pets were relaxed the whole trip, and the staff kept the entire car heated. This was in late October.

On the summer trip they still used a car at the end, what you call the Park car in this video, that had an outside platform big enough for a couple of seats. I've done the train & it is gorgeous, but, I like a motorcycle trip better you can ride north, south, east & west & see a much more varied slice of the country especially with no time constraints, so you find a hot spring(my favorite) you like, stay for a day or two, I've seen bears, elk, deer, moose, beaver, eagles, mountain goats, actually too many animals to list, it's a great country to get to know, of course, I'm biased as I'm Canadian...

The government keeps cutting their funding. Watching this made me sad for Amtrak though; it's so shabby now. The first trip I took had actual food made downstairs in the dining car. Real silverware, coffee cups and plates; now it's all microwaved slop served on plastic. Very sad really.

I agree because I think we'll live to see the end of any major passenger rail service here in America let's hope via recognizes the historical significance of what they're doing with these trains and let that be what brings their revenue because what they have and what they're doing is very special because no other passenger Railroad in America uses vintage equipment anymore via as far as I know is the only one that does

This was a blast from the past! I did this trip in September 1978 - it was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life. There were a few differences - I left from Montreal, the train was older and didn't seem as quiet as this one appears to be. I slept in a lower berth in a sleeping car - very comfortable. However, I had no access to a shower the entire time. The food on this train appears to be a bit better than what I experienced, although it was by no means not tasty. The scenery was every bit as stunning, however the city of Vancouver has certainly undergone a major metamorphosis in 41 years! I would recommend this trip to anyone and everyone and should be a requirement on the Bucket List of one and all.

I don’t know how old this tape is, but those cars look like what they used for the Ocean route back in the 80’s-90’s My daughter and I did that route from Halifax to Montreal for 10 years 4 times a year. It was a great for small children because they had child programs like , movies, crafts, snacks, for free. Miss those years. ☺️
