Also light weight. Easy to work on. BUT there are two versions of inside parts. Don't mix them. Well you can mix the plates and clutches. You just be one plate and disc short of having a high performance build. Those are good for 340-360s but not good for 383/Hemi/440s. That is why the 4 barrel 69 Town and Countries are missing he engines and transmissions

Also light weight. Easy to work on. BUT there are more than two 727 versions of inside parts and engine bolt patterns. Don't mix them. Well you can mix the plates, baskets and clutches. They will work behind a 383 2 barrel. (Also if the pack has the ASSEMBLED right feeler gap. There also is total gap for entire assembly (very important)) Also do NOT put it behind high horses and torque. You also will be just be one plate and disc short of having a high performance build. There are also different clutch baskets (drums) Those are good for 340-360s but not good for 383/Hemi/440s. That is why the 4 barrel version of 69 Town and Countries are missing the engines and transmissions. Also the disc brakes. 727 with bronze plates were either police or racing builds. A real factory race HEMI/440 will have those. I worked in a tranny shop in the 70s. IF you do rebuild a real police vehicle. Hint: Good source for the heavy duty build. The only thing for direction choice is Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive. LOW is not an option. That is how to can tell it is not a replica. Also anything past D is locked out on the steering column. The column may or may not read that way. Some are locked out on the trans linkage. Nothing stinks like a old Ford FMX. It also likes to spit the special stink, burnt tranny fluid, on you, like a upset camel.

Howard Simpson (1892 - 1963) was the inventor of the Simpson planetary gearset which formed the basis of the 3 speed automatic transmission. Ford in the early 1950's was the first company to licence the Simpson patents, however did not produce the Simpson design until the introduction of its C4 and C6 transmission in the mid 1960's. GM licensed the Simpson patents in the mid 1960's with the introduction of the TM-400 and TM-350. However, Chrysler recognized Simpson's design, licensed and introduced the Torqueflite 727 transmission in 1956. Both Ford and GM tried to go their own way but relented once they realized the value of Simpson's design. An interesting era of automotive history.

Nick here is and old school trick on 727s. When I graduated from Auto Tech School AAI in Glendale Arizona I went to work for Plymouth dealer and worked around Mechanics that had worked on the 440 six pack cars and Hemi cars new. And they worked on the old Monaco and Polara 440 Police interceptors . One of the techs told me back in the day they would pull the valve body down and pull the accumulator spring out for the piston on one two shift on the old interceptors . He told me it would make the one two shift firmer and quicker . I tried it an man did is shift quick and hard ! I rebuilt one of these a long time ago at school a student brought in a 69 charger and I rebuilt it at school I was surprised it actually worked . One of my instructors told me to use type F on the transmission he said that real expensive green ATF you buy for racing is just type F with a dye in it. Boy that was a long time ago.

Just a trick I learned from a ford tech school. (applies to any automatic). Try to install the steel and friction plates with the rounded edges on the inner and outer teeth up. Theoretically, the rounded edges, (made when the plates were made in the die cutter), will allow the whole pack to apply smoother.

My old Motor Transmission manual says to use "Door Ease" stainless stick lubricant on those clutch piston seals for installation. I found a stick of "Door Ease" at a local parts store 35 years ago. It is kind of like a wax stick. I still have that same stick and use it on every 727 and 904 I rebuild. Just smear it on the lip of the seal and on the beveled area on the drum where the seal contacts the drum. I have real good luck sliding the piston in then. It works better then anything else I have tried.

Not only is this the coolest car channel, it is one of the finest examples of a music appreciation class. Where else could you hear George Bizet, shred guitar, jazz tunes, country, Latin? It's a musician's dream. Being one who plays and listens to everything, I can say this is a treasure. As I rebuild brass instruments restore old drums, I watch Nick do his thing. Fantastic. Mopar lover here.

Hey Nick, Your building a classic transmission listening to classical music, very cool. I have rebuilt my 727 in my International Harvester Scout II 4X4 adding a few tricks like installing a bolt in sprag and building the clutch packs to 426 Hemi specs, extra springs and clutches. Over my many years, I have also I have built 727's, 904's, C-3, C-4 and C-6 trannies, they are simple and fun. I am thinking about rebuilding the trans in my 2013 Toyota Sienna, The only pain in the butt part is it's front wheel drive and I don't have a lift, but that's down the road a piece. Plenty of time to think up something to get it high enough to get it out.

Nick said it took genius to design the 727 automatic transmission. What's it take to understand it and rebuild it intuitively like Nick does? What a great video! Here we go!

Interesting piece of information about snap rings is that the crisp or non rounded side carries the pressure load of whatever the snap ring is retaining. You can feel the difference by rubbing your finger across the edge. The crisp edge faces away from whatever you are retaining. Find a new snap ring and check it out. I learned this while at tech school learning how to repair transmissions for the dough mixers you would see at a pizzeria or bakery. Pass it on!

Nick I must say I truly enjoyed this video since I also rebuild my 727's also, been a few years, but going to redue one soon, thanks for the refresher course and your personal techniques. My wife came downstairs while watching and told her look how good Nick is, even his wife allows him to use the salad bowl to soak his clutches in tranny fluid. Lol She didn't buy it. I think you may convinced some of the subscribers that they can also rebuild there own 727 or A904 now. Now they can save a ton of money also if need be. Best video to date! Thankyou.

By the way, it was a salad bowl at one time. When it was time to upgrade, took the old bowl to the shop and kept it for many purposes.

I can't wait to see Eugene's finished ride. The suspense has been built up more than Nicks Challenger build. I used to own a Barracuda Mod top in that same yellow color. I had to sell it when I went into the Service because my folks were moving once I was in. I wish I still had that Barracuda.

Nice to watch a professional work. I have used a paraffin candle or ski cream to install the seals. Paraffin glides well and does not affect the composition of the oil too much.

one thing a tech that rebuilds airplane gearboxes said, was when cleaning, the last clean is with acetone or alcohol so it gets other cleaners and their dried films off the wear surfaces, as they stop oil fron getting in and doing its job the best it can,, Bearings as well,, the room they rebuild bearings in is cleaner than an operating room as well..
