Those golf ball dimples(pock marks) arent from debris, thats from pinging(knock). That chunk missing from Cyl 2 piston wasnt a debris, thats was a hellatious pinging event that did massive damage, either boost controller failed and sent ALL the boost or fuel pressure dropped at full send and the engine went badly lean. Either way can kill and engine before you can pull the foot away. Previous owner got ALL the enjoyment from that one.

With the amount of lower end damage I was half expecting the engine to just come apart when the timing cover was removed.

The RR engine had its pan cut in half by the mechanics, not by the blow, this is #1 so far in terms of block carnage I think.

Oh, man! I had a 2014 Evo X MR ... that thing was a rocket on rails!! It was not an uncommon thing for people to blow those engines, not from lack of maintenance, but from over-boosting w/o beefing up the rest of the engine, then running at WOT for extended periods. It's disconcerting hearing one of those screaming along, then hear half-second of SCREEE--BANG!

Gotta love those customers that help Eric's bottom line, one heavy right foot at a time ....

As a Subie owner, it excites me to find out you got a Mitsubishi engine, particularly from the Evos. It will absolutely compliment very well to the Subie engine carnage from the first 2024 video.

I have an '03 Lancer with 175,000+ miles on it. I'm thankful it's not an Evo cause knowing how the previous owner treated it (anything besides an oil change and maybe a tune up was not happening), I seriously doubt it would be on the road now.😮 I love your channel, and I'm always excited to see what (hopeful) carnage awaits me every Saturday night.

When I rebuilt my 3.5 V6 in my 2009 Impala I lost the surclips for the pistons. Bought some retaining rings from the hardware store and bent them to the right size. Over 10k miles still runs perfectly 👌

Eric you should go back and check the top of cylinder #2 for ring ridge, if the engine was running without the top compression ring it should show up in the ring ridge.

Waterpumps with a lot of impeller pitting can be a sign of cavitation due to high-RPM operation, particularly with a higher percentage of water in the system than normal. I suspect that pump was an aftermarket part.

Lancers have been a long standing popular car in Australia dating back to the late 70s. Both my kids have had one. I still have. They have lasted pretty well, but the Evo was made for rallying and very successfully for a while, but it has to have been one of the most hot rodded cars ever. They get absolutely flogged. We don't see the other brands using similar engines so much, but Mitsubishi has a pretty good reputation here. I've had 3 mid size Magna (about Sonata size)sedans all good cars none of them from new and no complaints.

Ran across one of your vids as a YT Recommen while watching Speedkar99, and have been binging like crazy. Pretty far from a prude, but honestly one of the best YT'ers in about every category one could mention. No click-baiting, no crazy music, or begging to 'smash that like' is big plus. Lots of technical detail, occasional tangential takes that are either fun or informative. Doesn't feel the need to drop the f-bomb, etc every other sentence, which is probably nice for Dad's to watch with their kids. Catches the innuendo discreetly, and honestly is pretty funny without going over the top and painfully forcing it. My wish list for future video would also be a few more of the 3-cylinder motors that seem to be becoming more common. Crazy how different engines seem to be now compared to 80's 302/350's.

I owned a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer ES. It had a fuel injected 4g94 2.0 liter 140hp. Did the maintenance, and it had 241,000 miles before my youngest had an accident with it. Didn't burn oil, but it was starting to show it's age.

So, the fact there was no sludge, or varnish, makes me think the owner truly maintained his car... except the cooling system ;-)

Brilliant breakdown - some serious energy unleashed when that one popped. I once had a catastrophic failure of a (of all things) a year 2000 Volvo V40 T4 wagon (4 cylinder, 2 litre turbo, 200 bhp) which I’d had from new with about 120,000 miles on it. At around x8 mph, I had very little warning - a brief flash of the oil pressure light (ironically only topped up a few days prior), a microsecond later there was about 1 second of horrendous grinding noise followed by a very loud bang as a rod made a partially successful bid for freedom and as it introduced itself to the radiator and intercooler. End of Volvo. Reason was a disconnected oil cooling pipe which flushed out the old oil in record time. Everywhere. Great ending. Mrs Eric is a star !

I love that design. Such a simple, easy to maintain engine. Probably cheap and quick to manufacture.

There used to be a good writeup on a Korean blog showing the difference between the 4b11T and the Theta II from a genesis coupe. Looks like the blog was taken down in the last few years. But it showed how similar and how different they were. Key points: The theta is an open deck, 4b11t is a semi closed deck The theta has an extra hole for the water pump The 4b11t has 4 bolt mains, Theta only has 2 bolt mains Of course the pistons and rods are different, 4b11t has a lot stronger internals. From they way it was explained to me Mitsubishi rejected the design and Hyundai/Kia bought it. Then Mitsubishi reinforced the weak areas. Sure Hyundai/Kia still have the crankshaft defect that they blame everything on but I'm sure there's more to that than we know. I have a 2012 Sonata 2.0T with 256k miles on it (it's been tuned well over 200k miles and still kicking). With these cars you don't push them when something is wrong. I'm guessing this was a tuning mishap, possibly fuel related. Cylinder 3 likes to go in the Theta II as well, the first thought was that it was the exhaust manifold design of #3 being the shortest runner. Though many belive it's just a design flaw of the block. Those HKS plugs are heat range 8 (I run M45's which are heat range 9), those plugs are tough as hell. They can take a lot of detonation and will still be fine.

Funny, but back 1988 in high school my good friend bought a 1972 FJ 40 Landcruiser and it developed a misfire. He drove it all year and during the summer, I did a compression test on the 2F engine and #1 cylinder was dead. Pulled the cylinder head and the crown of the piston was stuck on top dead center of the block and the rod and the pressed in wrist pin were moving about freely in the bore of the cylinder. The wrist pin wore a groove in the block 5mm deep in the block. 😂 got a love the gutless indestructible Toyota 2F engine

Definitely looks like one of my engines. Meticulously serviced, always warmed up before WOT, doted on, washed and dried, but always suffering under just a measly quarter pound too much boost until its over.

Giving the stick a few tentative turns, I jerked on it with all my might... and ended up on the floor with it in my hands. It's all your fault. Cool vid, as always.

In the 90's i had a 1986 Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo. It was my second car and was hard to find replacement parts for. I was hard on the transmission in particular. Well, luckily Hyundai Transmissions fit right in and allowed me to keep sending it. I went through at least 3 transitions on that thing. Fun fact, i had a HKS cat back exhaust on it! Not the best car, but it was fun at the time.

Could you possibly tear down a 7.3 international idi turbo? Pre ignition cups and keystone rings would be awesome to see. Keep up the good work and hilarious jokes and sketches.

That motor was knocking from an improper tune, it was gonna go soon anyway because the clearances on these motors aren't OK for too much more than stock boost, but the issue here was knocking. I've seen this exact thing before. These engines in design are really tough and if people took the time to swap forged pistons and do the bearing clearances right, they're up there with k series as far as strength goes.

Woooo new teardown

The last Evo X was a 2015, so the timing guides were replaced sometime. It is my understanding that the 2008 and early 2009 4B11T came with a timing chain that did not last. Later versions did last. The engine may have been an OEM replacement. That could be another reason for the 2017 markings on the timing guides. If you are really lucky, that head has the sodium filled exhaust valves also seen on the 2015 Evo X Final Edition. The sodium valves and some reprogramming gave it 313 horsepower instead of 295. That makes the core more valuable. It's another situation where someone changes oil on schedule, but doesn't do anything else for maintenance. Does anyone else get motivated to change their antifreeze when watching these videos?

The global Chrysler version of these engines is outstanding. 200K miles on my last one and drove it like I stole it every single day and then donated it to a family member who totalled it a couple of weeks later.
