whyd you have to go and make things so complicated? i see the way youre acting like youre somebody else. gets me frustrated. simply admit that i am the funniest and greatest and sm*rtest and coolest and strongest yout*ber of all time! admit it, dear we
I wish my old English sheepdog was as calm as Roxie! I’ll tell you first hand that they can be calm at home but at the dog park they’re crazy runners and chasers due to their herding instinct
I have a sheepadoodle. She is so chill. Everyone has the same question: has she always been this calm? Yup. Since she was a puppy she just sits and watches the world. She's 2 years and 3 months old.
I've had 5 sheepdogs throughout my life. Absolutely the best temperament. Only downside is grooming costs. I'd love to find a sheepadoodle. I'm looking for my last dog.
Our OES is super chill. Very calm for the most part. She does get a little barky when excited. And very very attached to her people. She’s 2 and never runs off from her people like our last high energy dog (catahoula leopard dog). She has to be wherever we are. But her coat does take daily brushing and regular trimming of paws and bottom. We trim her down a couple times a year to stay cooler... and have less brushing.
When I lived in England years ago I had a neighbor in a typical terrace house (think small townhouse) who had three Old English and all on the large side. Since they didn't have any kids, the dogs used to love coming over and playing with ours in the front garden. Skip, the largest one, had the unnerving habit of sitting on a kid when he was done playing. This was accompanied by howls of laughter and giggling.
@@ms-corleone I was just about to say this! 😂 I feel like a lot of people in the UK grow up without ever actually knowing the breed name, it's just the Dulux dog. My mum still calls them that, she'll tell me "I saw a big Dulux dog in town today!"
@@ms-corleone Yes! Always a Dulux dog. I had an almost lifesize stuffed toy one as a small child, it was bigger than me! I called it 'Nana' after the dog in Peter Pan!
@Nil-tz6gy They're not as eager-to-please as a lot of other herding breeds, but they're definitely not stubborn like a bloodhound or beagle. They tend to be very smart and very patient, and they like to take a bit to figure out new things, rather than charging in or running away immediately. This might be because they can't see much, on account of the fluf. Consider the blanket test, what was, for a long time, the standard test for doggie intelligence. You throw a blanket over a dog, and see how long it takes for them to pull it off. Most dogs try to pull the blanket off right away, but an OES probably won't. They might look around a bit, try to figure out what is going on, listen to the humans laughing at them, and so on, before trying to escape. Or, if they're not bothered, they may just lay there, because it really isn't that much heavier than their natural coat. They may even realize that this is funny and start playing. There's a lot of variety in their personality.
I have an Old English Sheepdog that I took in to foster “just until we can find her a good home”. I guess we did. Three years later she is still here. She is an absolute hoot with so much personality. I cannot imagine my home without her, now.❤️
She’s a lot smaller than I expected her to be. She was mostly fur! Such a sweet dog. The Little Mermaid made me want an Old English Sheepdog (never ended up getting one though…)
@@sweetcinnamonpnchkin I'd highly recommend it! My family got an OES when I was two, so I grew up with one my whole childhood. She was the best, most loving dog ever!
shaving my leonberger was heartbreaking but as a dog who swam several times a day the matting got very bad as he got older and it was the best thing to do for him. Remember guys it always grows back!
@The Passionate Dahlia Well actually it was the fairies fault. But when we got bored we used to beat him with rolls of cash. The simple life of the leonberger owner 😌
That was a super classy groom you did, especially on the face. And this dog was equally super classy about the whole experience herself - Huskies: take notes! ;-)
She'll be back when she looks exactly like at the beginning. Most owners have a length tolerance and will let them go as long as they can without a groom.
@@YIKESMF unfortunately you’re right. My friend is a groomer and sees that situation all too often. One day after she recommended the dog come back in a certain time frame the next appointment they didn’t come back for her. My friend adopted her and the people tried to get her back but because they technically abandoned the poor baby they failed and weren’t allowed to adopt another animal from any shelter or humane society.
@@Burning_Dwarf a chum of mine spins dog fur with sheep's wool. She uses a number of dog breeds, as her husband is a veterinarian. The sheep's fleece stabilizes the dog fur for a lovely yarn, which she can then knit.
As a child I worked for a groomer who spun beautiful yarn and wove shawls from some dogs fur, which she usually sold to the owner. I didn’t know enough at the time to ask if only some breeds made good yarn. She was a true ‘country’ woman, passed away many years ago.
Actually, it does (not all breeds -- those with short fur don't work). I'm a Spinner/Weaver/Dyer, and I've used my dog's fur for spinning and weaving. Any breed that has a nice long undercoat works very well. As someone said below, it works better mixed with wool for better stability.
I had an O E Sheepdog during my 20's and she was a wonderful companion. I used nothing but a steel comb for grooming her, and it was a lot of work, but she was beautiful when finished. A lot of summers I had she shaved down like Roxy because it's so hot and humid where I live.
I have a poodle that also needs daily combing. But between the toes, it turns out he matted too. Gee.. This is because he must be part cat, grooms himself at top of his feet and paws. I had him in a summer cut at the groomers, and i was shown some dreads between his toes. Gosh. Nowadays i check daily while i am combing his legs and feet.
I grew up with an old English sheepdog. She was my big sister ! She was so calm and protective ! even with our cat, my guinea pig and the other children of the neighborhood. Everybody in the street knew that we were in security when the dog was here, especially the small children. A living loving soft toy (so fluffy !) with a golden heart. Perfect bread for family with children and others pets or animal.🥰
Question: when you're in the unfortunate situation that a dog is so matted they need shaving, do you communicate to the owners how to better care for their dogs coat and how to avoid such matting in the future? If so, how?! Roxie looks so tidy and such a sweet girl ✨
Hard question. Maybe share this channel with them as a great channel for dog lovers and hope they take a hint? Or casually mention that you’ve seen an article or video about matting and how to deal with it. Many dog owners love their dogs more than they know how to care for them, and a gentle suggestion goes farther than criticism. Good luck. Sounds like the dog is lucky you care for her and notice.
So I’m a certified vet assistant and when vets have a dog that comes in looking rather…not well we can’t do much. We have to try and put the pieces together with what the owner says, we give them options to choose from on how they want to tackle whatever their animal is suffering with. I know this may not be exactly what a groomer does but it’s a bit similar (I would think), they’re not OUR dogs so we can’t force anyone into doing anything.
She reminds me of a pair of them when I was a kid. Every spring they'd be shaved down, the hair would be kept thin/short until near the end of summer when the owners let it grow again. Their idea was that it was good for them so they'd be warm in winter and not too warm in summer. No idea if that's true, but it was my introduction to the fact that there was such a thing as a dog groomer :) She's adorable and looks like a puppy at the end!
My grandmother rescued an old English sheepdog when I was a baby. She had 6 grandchildren 0-4 years old and Monty (sheepdog) had his hands full with us. He bumped between us if we got into fights. He herded us going to the park. He pulled us back if we decided to explore the fireplace. He took his job as Nanny's helper very seriously!
I grew up with an Old English Sheepdog! Loyal, loving, wonderful, funny dog! She was the best. I'd spend hours brushing all that hair. And they do get matted easily. When she got older, we kept her groomed with a short cut. And they never really walk....always a happy trot. ☺️❤️
...you are absolutely right - if you've had an old english sheepdog you will feel that he/she was the best dog you've ever had!!...my locky passed away about 3 yrs ago & i am still grieving...i've been fortunate enuff to have lived with & loved several dogs but none have touched my heart so deeply as locky has...i have fostered for approx 11 yrs now -8 of them with locky...he opened his heart & home to these unfortunate dogs & shared all he had, i.e. his mom, canine brother, kitties, toys, bed, etc...when he was about 3 yrs old we discovered that he seemed to enjoy the older dogs so we started to foster the senior dogs...there's quite a number of those that locky & i lost our hearts over & mourned when they passed but he was always ready to take on the next one (me too)....i'm sorry to ramble on but i could talk bout my lockyboy all day...of all the dogs that i have loved & lost, locky has affected me the most & i have never mourned this deeply...someday, i will love & live with another sheepdog...my current foster needs to be an only dog so it may be awhile before that happens....again sorry to ramble but when i saw roxy, i just had to comment...locky was basically a calm dog but had his energetic times,,..he was the best behaved - he would respond to the tone of my voice & even body gestures...sorry, i am going to stop...
This makes me think of another Old English Sheepdog, immortalized by The Beatles in their song "Martha My Dear". Martha was Paul McCartney's family dog for many years & can be seen in quite a few photos from those halcyon days. She was obviously a very good girl & deserved being the much loved subject of a famous song. 💙☮💙
In the 80s, Paul McCartney released a live album called "Paul Is Live" and on the cover was Ace, a relative of Martha's. In the 90s, when the three surviving members of the Beatles reunited create new music, the image of a running Old English Sheepdog appear in the music video of "Free As A Bird".
I grew up with an English sheepdog They are EXCELLENT babysitters/guardians. My brothers and I have many fond memories of of our MANDY BEAR and the adventures she shared with us. It’s been 30plus years since she’s been gone and she is still missed
So glad you are grooming an Old English Sheep Dog. When I was growing up my mum used to breed and show ours. Love the breed. They should never be left in a shaggy condition.
The Little Mermaid was the first thing that came to mind which of course was Max. So funny you mentioned that. An adorable dog and incredibly well-behaved!
Had them, all rescues, for nearly 40 yrs. (till I couldn't find any that needed rescuing) and always two at a time. Absolute best dogs ever. How I miss them all!! Loved this video. Would kill for another.
I had an Old English sheepdog, she passed away 2 years ago at the age of 13 years old. The whole family still miss her every single day. And all that was said in the video is true. Best breed ever, amazing with children, and the separation anxiety was real! She was with me 24/7, unless I had to go for a trip. She knew all her commands in 3 languages: french, english and sing language. And that is actually how we found out during the last year that she became deaf. After she passed a friend got me a painting saying: Everyone has a guardian angel, but the lucky one have a bobtail!
She looks pretty now, love her face. I have used Dirty Dog shampoo by Nature’s Choice for almost 20 years now, it is the only shampoo I buy. It’s soap free, but you would never know that. It lathers up so well, cuts the grease in their coat, and smells so clean. I have NEVER had even one dog have any reaction or itching from it. It’s highly concentrated, 50/1, you just need to thoroughly rinse it out. Love your videos!!! ❤️
The last animal I owned was an Old English. She was So wonderful I can't describe it. She was so overjoyed to see me when I came home from work. When I lost coordination and speech I could no longer take care of her so I donated her to 4-H. Over a decade of effort I regained most of my functioning but I never recovered from having to give up my doggy cheerleader. My hope is she brought joy to her new young guardian for all the years of her life.
Roxie was impersonating a beat poet for a moment as you trimmed her top knot. What a gorgeous creature; so gentle and loving. I bet she loves to play with baby humans.
In the UK Old English Sheep Dogs are often referred to as Dulux dogs - as for many years (during the 80s & 90s) they were the stars of TV adverts for Dulux paint.
