love the video, Jay. I'm a very proud owner of the Gershman's Grand Avant Garde. I can listen and enjoy all my music, even the "bad recordings," without compromises, just as you mentioned in your video. I owned and auditioned many high-end pairs of speakers before purchasing the Grand measured Avant-Garde, so I have been comparing speakers as you just did in this video for many years. I just have a few comments that your viewers should consider: When referring to fast bass, it is imperative to compare speakers that can reach the same low frequencies,. In this case, the Grand Avant-Garde reaches 21Hz (I measured it), the rest of the speakers you mentioned, and most speakers and subwoofers do not go as low. 21Hz means 21cycles per second; obviously, it would not be as fast as 40 or 50cycle per second therefore you can not compare the speed of 21 Hz to the speed of 40Hz. you shouldn't confuse the two. I would like to stress out that sometimes people confuse speakers with less bass extension and volume, as having control and speed in the bass region, this is false.
Based on your enthusiastic reviews I ran to my local dealer where I spent an hour listening to the TTT's powered by 17K McIntosh gear. Imaging and soundstage are ridiculously good as they magically disappear into a wall of sound. Vocals, strings, acoustic instruments all very nice, however turn up the volume to rock out a bit and the bass sounds like a small speaker, albeit very good one that I could enjoy in a secondary living room system. By comparison the Totem Forests are the superior all rounders. I've listened to the Gershmans on several occasions and find them vastly superior to either. The laws of physics and return on investment both remain intact. Cheers!
Great video Jay, It seems that you need to familiarize yourself again with the Gershman Grand Avant Garde. It has been 9 months since you reviewed them according to RU-vid, (it's difficult to remember all the details and compare without having the three products, side by side. ; the Gershmans baffle (5")which is narrower than the Totems and Alec. Gershman also went further than both companies and treated the baffle with felt in order to achieve the perfect imaging.
Hi Jay. I’ve been loving my KLH Model 5’s and think they deserve much more credit than they get. I have them paired with Pass Labs and Denafrips gear and the detail, bass and soundstaging are impressive! I bought some Dynaudio Heritage Specials as an upgrade attempt but still prefer the KLH. Do you think the Tribes would better the KLH? I loved my old Totem Forests…
Appreciate it Jay. I think the longer we are in this game the better our ears become . And we have to hear different products to gain experience and to learn what we like as individuals. Peace .
Had the Totem Arro, now the Kin Mini + sub. Want to buy something better, and I am thinking LS50 META + my Totem Sub. But haven't heard them... I don't really care about the price, and you reviewed both. Is the Totem much, much better? The reason I traded the Arro for the Kin? 6db/Oct filtering. I never liked 12dB filters: sound stage moves forward and backwards, as always is the case with 3-way speakers. Can you give your opinion?
I wanted to bring up the point that I think most come across when choosing the perfect pair of speakers. Listening to the music we like: When it comes to speakers that are considered to be revealing or exciting, we are put in a position that we can not listen to most of the music we have or enjoy as the recording is considered to be " BAD RECORDING". But the problem is that it's not the recordings, it's the "Reaviling speakers" preventing us from enjoying our music, restricting us to listening only to Audiophile music because they are too bright. It's much better to have forgiving speakers and listen to any recording.
Hi I've been watching your channel for about a year I live in the UK and love your in depth reviews which are very well presented. In relation to your comments in this video I do agree that it seems like every time you have a new pair of speakers in you claim there better than the last. What hifi magazine in the UK do not date these totems as a 5 star product so stressing how much a matter of taste is definitely right in what your doing. I guess the advantage a magazine has is they can rate all aspects of a product in a format such as build, sound quality, compatibility etc. At the moment people looking to buy new products will do so based on reviews which on your channel has become more confusing over time. Just an observation not trying to be negative keep up the good work!
I like when people compare speakers and amps. I heard the totem tribe at audio fest and they had them playing loud and I could hear them distorting ding from being pushed.
What do you recommend? I was considering the Totem Element Metal V2. But now I have seen some rave reviews about the Magico A3 and may consider the a5 with more bass drivers. I’m trying to stay under 20k.
WOW! Your ears must be Vulcan! How you can tell the difference between woofers, mids, and highs in different speakers just amazes me!! I wish I had your hearing!
I don’t know which one to choose still. I’m debating between Totem Element Metal v2, Alta Alec, or Gershman Grand Avant Garde. Honestly never considered any of these speakers until I came across your positive reviews. Heck, never heard of Alta and Gershman until I saw your review. Keep up the excellent job! Curious if you have any experience with the Totem Element Metal V2 speakers and what your thoughts are on those? Thank you!
I went with the Gershman - I love them, as it has everything I was looking for and more. I listen to any kind of music at any volume and it sounds incredible, without missing any detail or killing my ears. That's all I can tell you, but it depends on what you are looking for.
You doing an excellent job and I appreciate your content. You explain your thoughts and also you always tell everyone that these products are not for everyone. Thank You Sr.
From the peanut gallery: I like the fact that you review good products, that perform well. Even though there is plenty of junk that is out there, I am not interested in watching you flame brand-X's component on your channel. What I am interested in, is just this sort of content. Where we take a hard look at the strengths and weaknesses, of some exceptional product. Great Job!
Hi Jay, Thanks for the great vid. Do you or anyone else watching this video know if if the Totem Tribe Towers will integrate well with the Model One Signature center channel speaker and Model One bookshelf speakers in a suround sound home setup? I have read several times online that every Totem speaker line is designed to sound differently from each other.
I appreciate your reviews and your channel seriously been watching you since the pandemic started. I appreciate the in depth you go into and accuracy of what and how a speaker should be reviewed.
You really need to define your terms. Bass texture? Tone? What do they mean? This is the problem with audiophile reviewers. They have their own terms that are never defined.
@@DonLee480 yes, there's a new review channel out there and the guy opened them up and showed the drivers and the build quality. Somehow Alta is selling budget builds for thousands of dollars.
@@Audfile that’s a very complex cabinet. Listen to them before you judge. As I said a speaker is not simply a sum of its parts but the quality of the sound. Performance is eveything
Jay WwowW Jay WwowW.... Just seen this as I type... Its about time, as you are absolutely right, this is how we buy, from TVs to cars, we compare and thank you for doing this... And your comparing your favourites WwowW... Bless
Hey you will NEVER please everyone, there will ALWAYS be the trolls, don't feed them! Keep accurate notes (which you seem to do), emphasize when you review that the sound you are describing is IN YOUR ROOM. Provide the gear chain with every review so that folks can make their own connections/predictions/extrapolations based on those components' performance specs and any potential synergy with the piece under review. This forces them to take ultimate responsibility for any purchasing decision that is based on your reviews. Other than that, there isn't much more you can do to silence the complainers dude, sorry but being a RU-vidr the shit comes with the territory!
He provides no measurments to show his claims. Should be easy to show the frequency response of the speaker. How do I know what his room sounds like. He gives an opinion based on what he thinks he hears. That's not a troll, that's just sense. I still have no idea what the totem speakers sound like after this video !
@@r423sdex Jay isn't into measurements, at least not yet, Ron over at NRD is doing measurements, if that is what you are into. Personally I don't much care for measurements as a means of determining whether I might like something or not. Agree however that I am not sure there is enough information on offer in this review to feel confident I understand how this speaker is unique in terms of sound signature. Most importantly I feel like without a comprehensive description of the gear chain with some specs, it is hard to extrapolate what gear these speakers might or might not synergize with.
Love your channel and your take on HIFI. We need more reviewers like you to get to the heart of the issue. Your reviews help cut through the marketing BS! Thanks for your efforts
I sometimes get lost with all the comparisons... What about do the favor for us (at least for me) and categorize them like Tier 1 (top with a color) Tier 2 and so on... that way when I reach for a category based on my budget I know if I can go to a higher tier or reach for a better product in the same category
Another great , real, truthful review. Thank you. If you had a choice between Tekton Moabs and the Totem tribe tower. Both same price. Which one would you buy .
Love you bro! But I would really love if you would refrain from addressing any s*** talkers you may have. All it does is give them power, and inserts a negative feeling in your videos. Keep up the good work my man. I watch and like every single one of your videos
'There is alway a better asian than you?' That is deep and cynical. lol. Love the quote. Dont get it too personal. Always love your straight and honest review. Dont hold back and hope you will review more equipment that is neutral. lol. Happy lunar new year
Must say,i’m confused . few months ago the avangarde became your dream speaker. you said that you preferred them over the Wilson sabrina and according that review you bought them,so please explain me,what happened since then? . people trust on your reviews !
You said before that the Totem Tribe speakers made other speakers sound like they were broken but maybe not these two in your comparison. It's all about money , I doubt speakers costing 50,000 or 200,000 would sound broken. Like Focal Grand EM's which Steve Guttenberg said made it sound like a symphony orchestra is in your living room but then they cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and have an electro magnet in their main driver which is at least 50 lbs heavy.
Great video, Jay! A healthy comparison of various products are great way to help viewers better understand each product and where reviewer's points are coming from. I look forward to seeing more comparison videos from NBT. Keep up the good work!
One suggestions, if you might remind us in video which're the gears your paired with each speakers. This might share some insight of why one might have better synergry/advantage over another reviewed product? Just a thought.
Great! This sort of review/comparison is where the rubber hits the road! Describing sound; It's just occurred to me; the subtleties of the way the reviewer pronounces descriptive words, and also facial expression, is a big part of how more effective a video is over a written review. I was thinking about the way Thomas says 'smooth' and how it seems to mean something different to Jay!
I tried listen to Totem Tribe Tower, I had high expectation but it come up short, the female voice sounded a little nasal or tubed, not open and clear. The dealer happen to have the Gershman Avante Grade 30 years anniversary model, it sound much better in every way…
I want a put over the table something that can lead us to know about the accuracy or any audio reviewer opinion. EVery opinion is subjective for every reviewer but i think, how do we know that the reviewer has a qualify ears to give us her opinion if he can hear only up to 12khz or 13khz or less, it means if my assumption is true "he can perceive any gear like speakers as laid back or without highs because he is not be able to listen that frequencies , another reviewer with better ears or he can listen up to 18khz or 19khz is going to have a more accurate review. I think every proffesional reviewer has to show his audiometry in order to show that he has accurate hearing to make a review. Ear's reviewers are the tools for them to evaluate a gear and an audiometry is the way to test him. Give me your opinions. Especially for reviewers that don't show measurements.
Food for thought: Now imagine what top of the line totem element metal v2 can do considering the alta's were 2x the price almost, gershman were 3x, so imagine something like flagship totem which is exact same price as gershman will smoke everything.🤯
it doesn't exactly work that way. I would encourage you to have a listen to these speakers for yourself. gear room and taste play a huge factor. one of the reasons I pushed for a comparison is because I have heard thes speakers and wanted to see our differences of perception/opinion
I wish reviewer would cut the crap, sometimes a speaker can be better. I had a set of highly regarded, extremely well reviewed set of speakers I tried with various amps in multiple setups and had good performance but they didn't out perform my Monitor Audio's at less than half the price. I got set of Golden Ears afterwards that were still almost half the price and they absolutely mop the floor of the more expensive speakers. I know Golden Ear and Monitor Audio are generally considered good value, but some of these so called elite brands are overpriced significantly. My MAs were 1800, Golden Ear 3500, Elite brand 5900. Try before you buy.
Great comparison video Jay. I own the Alta Alec speakers and love them, but I've owned Totem speakers in the past, and think Vince is an incredible designer. I look forward to hearing the Totem Tribe at some point.
The Totem Tribe Tower is the only speaker I would even dream of if there were 1000 bad reviews out there. Cause I know what they make me feel like 🤩🔥🤤💥⚡️
We can get conditioned into ways of thinking ...like I never dreamed I'd ever want or ever like or even bother trying any speaker with just 2 of 4" inch mid/base drivers on each, after owning speakers with 10, 12 & 15 inch drivers, but from what you've said previously & now, it seems like I'd pick the Totems if given the choice over many others. And they aren't heavy!!! I'm shocked by that (& left wondering if they use 1 or 2 thinned box panel's resonance as part of their designer's wanted sound, as very few designs have done before, (the placing of internal bracing or lack of would give a clue) but all above is just arbitrary interest only because that would Not stop me buying them if they sound as good to me as they do to yourself. And good bass without the standard crossover trickery to subdue the range above the bass that wzys makes those speakers much less sensitive & needing far more power. They certainly do (as you've said b4) seem to defy physics in at least 2 or 3 different ways.
