I have a lot of respect for Leo. He's been making these for many many years, what seems like every week. And at the standard at which he does them, that is quite the feat. I do think that he's a producer first, a video maker second, and a musician third. What he does obviously requires a very professional capability in all three of those, as well as a lot of hard work. But I think he mostly stands out in the first two. I don't mean to deminish his musicianship, but I do think he's developed a very solid formula that he keeps on applying (expertly) to different songs. When you listen to more of his stuff, you start hearing his limitation when it comes to musical innovation. He's great at arranging this style of music, but if he was a more capable composer I'm sure he would have released more of his own music. And that is perfectly fine. In general covers are perfectly fine. A good cover can be a wonderful addition to any good set list or even album. I do think any self respecting artist should have a very standard when recording/releasing a cover. If the cover is of a very famous song and especially if it stands out in terms of style, you quickly get very close to cash-grab territory. If you release a cover and it's hardly different from the original, you will not get any respect for that from me. Same story if your biggest hit by a long way was a cover. If you cover an unknown song from a much smaller artist, I think you should make extra clear that it's not in fact your song. I think there are plenty of examples of otherwise great artists doing this wrongly, and many examples of artist doing this right. Most important thing for me is that if you are a beginning band, there is no shame whatsoever in relying on covers to spice up your live sets. It's also great practice, and learning to perform those songs could help you learn what makes a good song. But if you lean on those covers too much, you are never going to learn songwriting. From my perspective as a booker (in the general pop music space), (non-beginner) bands that do predominantly covers are a largely separate world from the bands that mostly play their own songs. There are very few band in the middle, and there are not a lot of bands crossing over. That's not a condemnation, but I do think it means something.

Leo puts out a Metal cover every single week and he's been doing it for years and the quality is always high. He's approach is to always stay pretty close to the original but then insert a bridge where he goes full on Metal. And the videos are always fun to, with costumes, make-up, puppets, and other fun stuff.

Leo M. has something I really admire: He is a really talented multi-instrumentalist who really takes care about what he does. His covers are really well-made. They do respect the originals always. And you are totally right about covers in general. Whoever starts to learn an instrument does covers. I know nobody who didn't. Sure, it might be more of a personal satisfaction to write your own song, but a well-made cover can be just as much fun. And in my opinion, showing your appreciation for another artist by covering his song can say something about an artist. People like Johnny Cash, Amy Winehouse, Tina Turner and so many more were not shy of it and nobody would dare to say that what they did is less artistic than writing your own songs. More than once a cover has been far more successful and sometimes even a good portion better than the original. "Cover-shaming" is really stupid. Thanks for the video, I was entertained, as always! I nearly forgot about Leo, but I had seen some of his videos before, and he might get - some - hate for it, but I think this is stupid. He is just showing, that some very good songs even work in other genres. And it might bring some metalheads to take a glimpse into genres they did not know anything about before. Have a great mid of the week my dear dudette!

Leo has a great approach to his covers. In the beginning he pays tribute to the original by keeping a lot of it true to the original with some added flair. As it progresses though, he adds more of his style to the song. Making it his own. He also has an outro on his songs that are usually original music and lyrics. You should really check out his version of Adele's "Hello". It is amazing. Leo has been doing this so long, and so well that he actually tours with this show. He has friends that play in the 'Frogleap Band'. They play sold out shows in smaller venues across Europe and even do some of the festivals.

Being able to do a cover well, & by well I mean paying some respect to what the original is/was while doing your own thing with it in a convincing way, is an impressive skill imho. Leo does great work on a consistent basis with his covers. This one absolutely would not have worked without Hannah lifting the vocal, & the mighty Rabea Massaad is always excellent. I'm glad you watched the outro they recorded for this- it's one of the best on the YooToobs. :)

Rabea shredding in the solo!!! Killer player. There's nothing wrong with covers; the music world is full of them: Hendrix ("Hey Joe", "All Along the Watchtower"), Sinead ("Nothing Compares to You"), Whitney ("I Will Always Love You"), Cash ("Hurt"), pretty much Elvis' entire catalogue ... and the list goes on and on and on ... Not all great performers are great writers ... and there's nothing worse than listening to a poorly written song, IMHO. Just my $.02

Feuerschwanz featuring Melissa Bonny - Ding (SEEED Cover) It's just a really fun, catchy song and they incorporate a lot of old timey instruments, violins, harps, lutes, flutes and even a jaw harp, y'know, that mouth twanger thing. They're a German Medieval Folk Metal Band and Melissa is classically trained and simply amazing. You have to hear her with her band Ad Infinitum, it's Symphonic Power Metal with a good amount of Death Metal vocals.

Covers have been around for long than any one alive, at this point of time or for maybe the last 500 years or more. For that you hust have to look at classical music, the great composers died years ago, but their music is still played. Greensleaves was registered in 1580 and is still played today. But for some reason we never look at classical music being a cover.

Some of the most well known songs are covers, Mama We're All Crazee Now & Cum On Feel The Noize were Quiet Riot's biggest hits and they were both covers of Slade. Metallica's Whiskey In The Jar is a cover of Thin Lizzy which is a cover of The Dubliners 1968 recording. Metallica is the most covered metal band on Earth, Motorhead has covered over a dozen Metallica songs, RU-vidr Denis Pauna uploaded "What If Metallica Wrote Sharp Dressed Man (ZZ Top)" and "What If ZZ Top Wrote Kill 'Em All? (FULL ALBUM)", you should check them out, they're really amazing covers.

Hi sweet Melisa, as You now has opened the vault to great covers, why don't You take the opportunity to react to one of the artists I've recommended a while back - Tommy Johansson. Tommy Johansson has been the guitarist for Swedish metal band Sabaton for the past 7 years. He recently announced leaving the band to focus on his own band, Majestica and his personal RU-vid Channel covering other genres. He has hundreds of covers on his Channel, but I think you could start with Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" or go for a cover duet? Erik Grönwall, another Swede also born in 1987, recently announced leaving Skid Row due to health issues. Erik was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in March 2021, and he went through treatment to cure him. In early 2022 Erik joined Skid Row, his all-time favourite band. On March 8th, this year he released the first collab between him and Tommy. They covered the song "Carolus Rex" from Sabaton, and Tommy plays (as always) all the instruments. Pick and Choose: - Bohemian Rhapsody: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DsbWtnveZSw.htmlsi=VwdnUwV-8tdA4t1o - Carolus Rex (Sabaton Cover with Tommy Johansson): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ijaaozMdDgE.htmlsi=0fEBFaGAISRNE6AW Love from your Swedish Dude!

How do we first learn to play instruments or to find our own vocal styles? We listen to what others have done and we copy that and we add our own nuance to it. What do singers on talent shows do? They cover a popular song because that's statistically their best bet for success. There aren't many singer who go on got talent or x-factor or what have you that do an original song because there is no baseline in the zeitgeist, whether nostalgia or popularity, for original songs to strike the same chord. What did thedoo do to gain popularity? He played covers with his own flair for people on Omegle. Our whole musical world is made up of covers on covers and chord patterns with nuance.

I mean, GOOD covers are okay. If they are done by GOOD musicians or vocalists, people who know what they are doing, then sure, by all means. If it's somebody who is just starting in music so they don't yet know what they are doing, they most likely won't have made a good cover.

He is an incredible musician (im not even sure how many instruments he plays, but he plays them all homdelf onost of his covers. Foe the most part, he stays reasonably close to the original ehile still sdding a lot of his own "flavor". He has an EXTENSIVE catalogue to explore (I wouldn't hesitate to say that anyone could find at least 1 song he's done that they would enjoy). I agree that there is nothing wrong with covers, and I think both Leo, Tom Waits, and Jimi Hendrix are great examples of that. But I think if you are going to do a cover, then you have to make it your own, and that is what I find lacking in many covers. There is imo no point in making a carbon copy of the original; it will never be better than the original. Instead, why not add your own personal expression to it? Then it becomes interesting. I think when people are against covers, they are often against bad or boring covers. Good covers, on the other hand, can even be more successful than the original. Johnny Cash's cover of gurt is an example of that; Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along the Wall is another; or Jeff Buckley's cover of Halleluja. At least, imo, it's not about covers being good or bad; it's more boring when artists are not creative.

My answer is "no." I think playing covers means playing within somebody else's limitations. I think covers allow people of other communities to appreciate something that leans into what they are into. It sucks that hip hop will always get the hate it does because it "steals" music to redistribute it into a new form, but covers, imo, can make something fun and easier to connect two sides: the fans of the original vs the fans of the new.

I have a collection of covers that are way better than the original. In fact, some songs that I did not even like have covers that I actually like a lot. For example, I find Phil Collins rather boring and Genesis' song "Mama" super weird and annoying. But Tarot's (Marko Hiatala's band) cover of it is rather unique and good. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z-BRyqHCAaY.html Another example is Atrocity doing a bunch of covers to 80's songs such as "Smalltown Boy", "The Great Commandment", "Fade to gray", etc. And a much funner example is At Vance doing all sorts of ABBA stuff!
