TOTP 1966 (with lost original recordings for TOTP by original artists)

Lost to the world but now found!! - well the audio at least - 10 versions of songs especially recorded for TOTP (post-MU ban) from Spencer Davis Group, Manfred Mann, Georgie Fame, The Troggs, Small Faces, Chris Farlowe, Tom Jones, Donovan, The Seekers and Four Tops. (Songs by Frank Sinatra, Dusty Springfield, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Jim Reeves, Beach Boys and Kinks have been copyright-blocked) This is all thanks to my Dad who happened to tape the tele in our living room on December 26th and 27th 1966 with us kiddies present (so there's some background family stuff going on - screaming, singing, vacuum cleaner, typewriter). My dad was preparing to become a DJ in his spare time and I think here he was doing a bit of groundwork, making sure he had his finger on the pulse - especially this time in 1966 which was the year many people say the 1960s exploded. They were very exciting times indeed and that is conveyed in the enthusiasm of the presenters on these shows including Pete Murray, Alan Freeman, Simon Dee and 'Disc-girl' Samantha Juste. There are 9 versions of songs specially recorded for TOTP - from Spencer Davis Group, Manfred Mann, Georgie Fame, Small Faces, Chris Farlowe, Tom Jones, Donovan, The Seekers and Four Tops. Anyway, enough said! I have given the audio to the Kaleidoscope archive in Birmingham to go with all the other found tv gems from the 60s.
Correction: Please note Steve Winwood is the lead singer for 'Keep On Running' by Spencer Davis Group - not Spencer Davis himself as listed.

Respect to Simon Dee for standing by his principals and playing Scott Walkers 'Jackie' in spite of the BBCs crazy disapproval.

The thumbnail shows the early format of TOTP with the 45rpm records supposedly being played by the lovely Samantha Juste. When the Monkees came over to appear on the show, Mickey Dolenz fell for here and they were later married. Why do I remember all this stuff? I can't even remember where I put my car keys nowadays!
@millerswell
@millerswell Год назад
I had a mega-crush on Samantha Juste at the time (probably wasn't the only one!) ... was devastated when she left the show to marry Micky Dolenz c.1967! (I was TEN years old at the time! lol) They had a daughter Ami, who later became an actress and made a few movies in the 1990s and early 2000s. Sadly, the marriage ended in divorce in the mid-70s. Samantha later remarried, but sadly died from a stroke c. 2014.

Wow, this programme is a fantastic achievement. Well done!!! It raises two extreme feelings in me, one being the pleasure of reliving some of the thrill I would have had when I saw it back in 1966, the other is a feeling of infuriating disgust at the BBC for not keeping all these historical shows. The Christmas/New Year shows alone would be priceless. So many countless great performances lost forever. It's unthinkable. How could they have been so thoughtless. KAN 10.19 UK

The Tom Jones record gives the composer of "Green, Green Grass of Home" as _"Putnam"_ , a common mistake. His name was actually Curly P-U-T-M-A-N. Paul McCartney stayed at his farm for a few days while on tour with Wings in `74. He wrote "Junior's Farm" about the experience.

What a gem.! I used to tape stuff off the radio and TV, unfortunately , most of the early stuff got taped over in the 70s. I always taped john peels top gear, again mostly lost. These are pretty good quality recordings, as back then, the tape quality wasn't so good, and would degrade over time. Must have taken a lot of time to put the visuals together, we'll done, appreciated!

I recorded audio of both parts but my tapes haven't survived the years. Part one began with Paperback Writer, followed by all the No.1s in the sequence as they ran through the year. But halfway through Part 1, the Beatles sang both Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out, possibly following after Frank Sinatra. A Number One that isn't in the Guinness Book was the Stones' 19th Nervous Breakdown, maybe fairly early in the programme, before Nancy Sinatra possibly. I remember Savile saying "What a villain" to Paul Jones as he had left the Manfreds by then. I can't remember if the Troggs were at the end of Part 1. Part 2 began with Yellow Submarine, followed by the Small Faces. Alan Freeman introduced Eleanor Rigby a little later. They also played at least two discs that were yet to be hits (to make up the 45 mins. presumably) - the Seekers' Morningtown Ride and Donovan's Sunshine Superman. I'm not sure if Chris Farlowe also sang Yesterday's Papers, no, I think maybe that was in a later programme that I recorded. Part 2 certainly ended with the Beach Boys and Tom Jones after Four Tops and Jim Reeves. Both programmes were about 45 mins. long. Recording anyone? Everyone had a tape recorder in 1966! (As implied by the t.v. series Mission : Impossible.)

Glenn Johnson Some classic video lost due to the BBC clean brigade.As an example,"White Horses" by Jacky,along with many others,in `68 still existed on film and i remember seeing that back in the late 80`s.So,what`s happened here are the later film transfers being lost.A crime in itself.The Spotlight TV channel are starting a Memory lane 60`s show with picture collage.This is for the viewers who`s requests couldn`t be shown as video/film performances and that`s got a lot to do with the BBC`s attitude of wiping and throwing away historical performances.It`s one thing wiping the tapes for future use,cost etc but to then lose or throw away the film versions!!!Those that do exist have Saville edited out anyway,the music stays the same..

Fantastic compilation. - 'Pretty Flamingo' with Paul Jones singing lead was a huge hit, no. 1 in the UK. I had never heard a live performance of it before. Steve Marriot's voice was awesome, too. Why did the BBC wipe the shows? By the way, the same happened to a number of classic Doctor Who episodes (William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton).

Ahead of Pretty Flamingo, was Savile interviewing Mike Vickers (who left Manfred Mann the previous year to work as a conductor/arranger, presumably on TOTP amongst other things) or Mike D’Abo in a moment of meta behaviour by introducing his predecessor on this performance of the song.

Thanks for your comment. Saville was edited out of my original but I decided to keep him in to maintain it's integrity as a historical document. I also had a chat with the Kaleidoscope British TV culture archive people (whom I also submitted this audio to) and it is their policy to preserve things in tact/as they were. Being a keen archivist, I decided to follow that approach. If we airbrush history we don't learn. (I also considered a caveat/warning but that I thought that would draw more attention to that evil man and divert it from a rare slice of real 60s popular culture life.)

@@bertweill The witch hunt was a witch hunt. All the accusations were just that. He was dead already so couldn't answer for himself. And as you say, you can't airbrush history - or rewrite it. In 1966 he was just a D.J. on T.O.T.P.

Just because Saville was a b@#tard, does not detract from the music. At the end of the day it's the music that counts NOT Savills disgusting exploits.
