Stroll with us as we explore the grounds and the interior of The George W. Fulton Mansion, a few miles north of Corpus Christi, Texas. We arrived a few minutes early for the nine o'clock tour and were welcomed by knowledgeable guides.
Colonel George Ware Fulton and Harriet Gillette Smith built the 3.5 story structure overlooking Aransas Bay between 1874 and 1877. The residence, dubbed "Oakhurst" by its builders, featured the most up-to-date conveniences for the time, such as indoor plumbing, central gas lighting and heating.
This video was captured in January, 2000.

The Fulton Mansion is just amazing. The fine detail, structure and amenities are incredible. We stayed in the cottages beside of it. They are still working on it and it isn't open yet for touring. I was fascinated. Thank you for your video. I am still researching pictures and history.

I was saddened when I read your post. It reminded me of the condition of this grand home in the ‘50’s when it looked like an abandoned haunted house. I checked the Fulton website tonight and was delighted to hear that a preservation project is underway. “Tours of the Mansion will not be available after Feb. 24, 2013 due to preservation work.” You must go back after the work to see this historic site. It is very impressive in person. Thanks for viewing and commenting on my video. Dave.

Yes, this structure does have a colorful history. I was intrigued to read about the original owners and how the structure went into disrepair in the 60's. I am pleased another renovation is underway. Thanks for your comments! Dave.

I remember the Fulton Mansion from back in the 60's. My cousin built the motel next to the Fulton Mansion. Back in the early 60's. Then it was called "The Seafoam Motel". We used to travel down they and stay a week, fishing from my cousin's 650' pier. The Fulton Mansion has been remodeled several times and has stood the test of time and hurricanes. I would like to see the Texas Historic Society do a professional tour of the Mansion. All the live oak trees have grown toward the inland where the wind blows all the time. If you ever near Rockport/Fulton area stop in for a tour at the Fulton Mansion.

+D. Hansel Thanks for your comments! Yes, I also would like to see a professional video. This video I captured was with an old analog camera many years ago. I guess the mansion was quite rundown at one time, harboring ghosts and neighborhood kids sneaking in! I am glad it has been protected and preserved for all of us to see, enjoy and learn from. Thanks for your comments! Dave in Montana.

Great video showing inside. My wife and I visited Rockport area this weekend, but sadly, this mansion has not been kept up very well. Inside is closed off so we walked around. Paint is stripping off and the garden is in dire need of trimming. Anyhow, thanks for sharing the video!

This is absolutely exquisite! Just a beautifully appointed house. I can't imagine how posh life must of been living in this mansion. Everything is always bigger and better in Texas! If I ever am in Texas you can be sure I will visit this estate. Through 8 hurricanes and still standing! Amazing! Did this place have a basement? Just curious! Thank you for sharing one of the most beautiful houses that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting virtually.
@davidegg22
@davidegg22 9 лет назад
Thank you for watching my video and asking questions. The only basement that I know is the area just under the main first floor, possibly 1/2 to 3/4 height basement? I believe it contained the utilities since this home had full amenities. I am pleased you enjoyed my brief tour of this beautifully restored mansion. You are right, EVERYTHING is BIGGER in Texas! Dave in Montana.

I saw the ghost standing behind one of the front door windows, I was like 8 years old, and my parents were visiting it, I snatched some rocks and then felt as if someone was telepathically telling me to put it back, and when I turned I looked directly at this person that was all white, he looked like the kfc guy, I got scared so I left the rocks behind true story lol

"Haunted" often goes with these fine old homes...Gives 'em "character"...I don't know if this place falls into that category, but a good number the most well-documented old haunted structures in the world are usually both occupied and well maintained...

It very well might be, but I am not an expert! Wikipedia states: Second Empire is an architectural style, most popular between 1865 and 1880, and so named for the architectural elements in vogue during the era of the Second French Empire. The Italianate style of architecture was from the late 1840s to 1890 and it achieved huge popularity in the United States. The Fulton's built the mansion between 1874 and 1877 and it definitely was unique to the area. Thanks for watching and asking. Dave.

The "seashell" walk you're talking about it something that's called "tabby". It's a common material, mostly made of oyster shells, that was used in the southeastern part of the coastal US. I am from Savannah, Ga, and grew up seeing this "tabby" construction in a lot of the historical coastal areas. Nice video!!! Thanks for posting.

The stairway is incredible along with the tall arched wooden doorways. I've often thought it to be funny that ceilings and doorways were so high in the days that people overwhelmingly were quite short in comparison to the average height of people today
@davidegg22
@davidegg22 8 лет назад
+Greg Appelgren Greg, thanks for watching and commenting on my video. The main reason (as I have been told) for the 12' ceilings and interior tall doors in older homes and offices (some with windows above the doors) is to help disperse the toxic air and gasses from wood/coal burning fireplaces and stoves. It also helps move the hot air around instead of being trapped in the room with the heat source. It also keeps all the unbreathable air farther away from the people who lived/worked in these environments. Thanks again for asking such an interesting question! Dave in Montana.
@badapple65
@badapple65 8 лет назад
Thanks for reply. Wow! That makes sense so it was not just for style but for function. I then might guess in hot weather the warmer air would be up at high ceiling as well. To Big a new house today in the manner of the old days might cost $300 or more per sq ft.
@badapple65
@badapple65 8 лет назад
To build...I meant :)
@davidegg22
@davidegg22 8 лет назад
+Greg Appelgren With our HVAC systems piping temperature controlled and filtered air to each room, tall ceilings are now just for aesthetics. What impresses me is the beautiful woods and detailed craftsmanship they put into homes back then, even in a "common folks" home. I guess with the current price of real woods and the labor costs to mill and install, only few can afford to build like this. I will stick to my 60's built spec home. Its paid in full so I guess that counts for something!!! Do have a terrific week! Dave.

when I was 8 years old my parents took me to this place , and I remember running around the house and doing mischievious things, then while we were leaving, I took a rock from the landscaping and pocketed it, then I felt like someone was looking at me, and turned backward and saw a white figure that reminded me of the KFC guy, and I told my grandma to look, and she looked and he disappeared, and I sort of felt like I shouldn't take the rock, then I put it back, and walked away, and just to test it, I grabbed another one and looked, and he was there again looking at me. pretty interesting stuff, that's a true story

Would be nice to see it. Usually richer homes like this did not have fancy kitchens as they mostly had people cooking for them, and they did not seem to bother quite a much with them. So it may not be too fancy?

Of course this house did not have air conditioning in the 1800s; air conditioning was invented in 1902.
@RNGaston
@RNGaston 8 лет назад
+Jami Kacperski Modern air conditioning was invented in 1902. This house had an ice maker (patented in 1867) in the basement that made tons of ice. The central heating system drew air from the ice cooled basement and cooled the rest of the house. The first machine actually called an "air conditioner" was built in 1907 It's purpose was to add humidity to the air and not cool it.
