I feel like Stephens' audio quality could've been improved if it had been recorded separately on his end rather than record post-tramsmission. He was cut off regularly in the video :(
Hatch knows his stuff but my God he is an irritating commentator. Over pronouncing the foreign names etc, trying to inject a bit of excitement into a boring stage etc. If there's a minor crash it's "CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!. Ad nauseum. Give me Boulting and MIllar every day.
It’s long past time to dispense with the noisy, polluting Helis and replace them with drones. Not to mention every vehicle following the race on the ground should be electric. Bike racing is tarnished by its fossil fuel dependence, especially ironic as bicycles are the most efficient form of transport there is!
I'm surprised they still use helicopters to film, surely the riders feel the downdraft when they get that close or fly overhead? surely drones would be better nowadays, especially as they can film in HD now. It would be a lot cheaper too
@@EurosportCycling yes and no. The coverage we have now is great, I'm just thinking from a cyclist's perspective, and with the wind being such a huge factor, using drones would surely eliminate any wind disruption the riders might have to deal with. if they have to deal with any at all. for all I know the chopprs might be so far away they don't feel any but with drones you'd be able to get a lot closer and not have to worry about this
The legal framework around flying drones over groups of people and/or private property AND UCI's (actually valid) safety requirements for drone use around riders are generally the reason why we see very little drone use.
Pretty sure they keep their distance in the choppers and use telephoto lenses to get the shots, but I may be wrong. As a rider, I would get tired of hearing the choppers all day long, but maybe they're just used to it. To me, it makes more sense to use some high quality professional drones for the camera work. I think it would likely produce new interesting angles and views which are always welcome. Whatever the case, bravo to those that cover these races from above, good stuff.
