Charles Malki, Biologist & Plant Expert from ivorganics.com/ provides a tour of a fruit orchard planted approximately 10 years ago in Walnut Creek, California -- A "Bay Area" City with a USDA Growing Zone 9B. Generally, the higher your growing zone number, the greater the diversity of plants that you can grow. In this video you will see the many fruit trees that have performed consistently well in the backyard orchard of this Walnut Creek resident.
In this video, Charles Malki discusses (1) the diversity of fruit trees that can be grown in growing zone 9(B), (2) the importance of cross pollination for fruit trees, (3) sunburn and sunscald damaged trees, (4) how to properly stake and support a tree, (5) when and how to apply IV Organics 3-in-1 Tree Guard Paint, (6) poor pruning techniques, and much more!

Great fruit orchard! We grew up in WC and remember everyone growing all kinds of fruit trees. We still have family there that grows pomelo, blood orange, Valencias, olives, sapote, loquat, feijoa, macadamia, plums, and strawberry guava. The cherries and apricots never bear fruit, although they used the live down the hill where we had more chill hours growing up, and we had tons of apricots and some cherries there. Amazing growing climate there.

Hello Tom Stieber, Thank you for the compliment! I planted this property about 10+ years ago. The 3-4 cherry trees are a huge success on the property. Perhaps resulting in better yields because of cross-pollination between different varieties. I do not remember the varieties I planted. Growing your own food is sooooo rewarding-- And healthy! Thank you for taking the time to write me! :-) Charles

Hows the deer problem? I was over in Pinole and stone fruits did well....but my subtropicals did not ripen or set fruits. So I moved to Fallbrook and the rest is history....still have some frost issues at the bottom of canyon but now I can grow mangoes and many other sensitive fruits....glad you are setting the high bar....

Thank you for the compliment Raymond Balcom! Pinole is an AWESOME place to live!!! And so close to Muir Woods!!! The deer are a huge problem in Walnut Creek; hence, the entire property is fenced with an 8-10 foot structure a/k/a the wall! :-) I am glad you found a place here in So. Cal. where you can growth both your stone fruits & subtropical!!! Thanks for writing! Charles :-)

Mr Charles! Try one of those young almond, they are delicious 😋 I love ❤️ them before they are fully mature. (If you ever go to Nông Thôn Việtnamise restaurant in El Cerrito try the bananas blossom salad 🥗 see if you like it if you do I'll let you how to make it )

Hello Van Brant, I LOVE eating almonds while they are still green and you can eat the entire "fruit" with the shell and all! YUMMY! My parents used to purchase pounds of green almonds to snack on since as far back as I can remember! :) Thank you for sharing and looking forward to the day I state some banana blossom salad!!! Great to hear from you! :) Charles

Hello 👋 I’d recommend you look at DWN peach trees for quality choices- Zaiger fruit trees have characteristics that may also be desired. Here’s a helpful link that I’d use when choosing a peach tree: www.davewilson.com/nurseries/products/fruit-trees/peach-yellow/ Good luck, Charles 🍑

Couldn’t you have protected the trees from sun and winter cold by having faster growing taller trees to protect from sun and cold? More of an actual Forrest vibe? The taller trees protect the lower trees and the lower trees protect the trunk of the taller trees from sunburn? And then you wouldn’t have to paint them? Also wouldn’t this help retain the water in the soil to save on water bill? I’m not a gardener just been watching RU-vid videos thinking of getting into it and live in the Bay Area. So looking for tips :)

Hello Amanda M, This is a busy time of the year! But be sure to space some of your efforts in the garden by adding things to your garden every 3-6 weeks throughout spring and summer to extend your harvest. Charles :-)

Can you talk more to the water requirements I'm in Oakland so we probably won't require that much but how much does a Lemontree require a week I'm kind of unlimited water resources. Great video very informative thank you I have a few trees that will benefit from that paint
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Hello Robroy4137, I just spent this past weekend in Walnut Creek and took my wife to dinner in Jack London Square, Oakand-- So I was not too far away from you! :) Assuming that your citrus tree is in the ground, you will not need to water the plant at all from November through March (unless there is no rainfall, at all for at least 3 consecutive weeks). Winter there is so cool and damp, that there is not much that needs to be done. However, your summers can be hot and rain-free... when you will need to water more frequently. Keep in mind that citrus is considered a drought-tolerant plant.... however, you still need to offer the plant water for optimal success. Citrus prefer to be nearly completely dry between watering. And when you do water, SOAK IT! You should have a ring of soil around the tree that can support the water that will soak into the root zone of the tree. The soil should never be continuously wet as it harbors disease and may cause root and stem rot-- however, you cannot do much about this during the winter, but do not allow these continuously moist conditions to persist through the spring, summer and fall with too much water and frequent application. During your hottest days, you may water during those weeks as often as 2-3x per week. Spring and Fall should be 1-2x per week. However, you need to pay attention to weather, temperature and soil conditions. Gardening is a science and you will need to master your garden and its needs-- And each year you get to test yourself and your abilities! Have fun! :) If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Charles :)

I am looking to plant some banana trees. What kind would go well with kiwi fruit?
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Hello Helen Henrikson, You've got to decide if you want a small, medium or large banana plant. One of the smallest popular bananas is the the dwarf cavendish. If you are looking for a larger delicious variety, consider the Blue Java (ice cream), Manzano (apple) and Goldfinger. Keep me posted on what you decide to go with, and why! :-) Charles

@tstieber

@@11219tt Bananas will grow in WC but may lose leaves during cold spells. Plant against a sunny wall and give them tons of water and fertilizer for best appearance and potential fruit yield.

Mr Charles I didn't know you can eat the whole fruit of green almond.When my almond tree give me fruit again I will try it. You have very big yard there in Walnut Creek must be rare ? I'm practically your neighbor, I live in Hercules I'm starting to plants 🌱 more fruit trees 🌲 in my yard. I'd planted almost 30 trees in ground & about 40 in I guess 30 gallons pots last 3 months.Some are rare citrus 🍊. My kumquat are the side of lemon 🍋. Lemon side of orange 🍊also some tropical. Hope the tropical 🌴 live through this winter ❄️. I'm waiting for January to get bare roots stone fruit trees 🌲 and more tropical 🌴. Lowe's sale them so it must grow in our area ( Bay Area )

Hello Van Brant, I live in Los Angeles, but it's my brother's home in Walnut Creek that I planted just about 10 years ago with all of those fruit trees! There is an overload of fruit for his entire family and friends from about April/ May through the end of the year-- It's awesome! I love sharing lessons from his garden every chance I can visit! The bare root fruit trees just arrived to our Home Depots and Lowes here in Los Angeles in the past week... and I know more will be arriving by early January. I would love to get a tour of your garden the next time I visit Northern California! :) With regards to the green almonds, they need to be harvested when they are about 1/2 to 2/3 the mature size; typically in April maybe May. Keep your receipts for any trees you can return that do not survive winter-- As the plants resistance to freeze improve as they mature. Keep me posted on your gardening successes! :) Charles

Hello Amanda M, Is it obvious that I love lemons? :-) Because they are my #1 fruit tree!!! :-) Planting a pair of related lemons, such as Meyer & Eureka, will assist the trees in further maximizing cross pollination for larger fruit and larger yields! Do you have any lemon tree(s) in your garden? Charles

he was most likely thinking of aphids. since the ants farm the aphids. This video is too vague. As a "fruit expert" he should have labeled them and their varities.

Of course trees give a bounty in this area. It was almost all orchards until it got too tony for itself. Sad to see all that bare ground under the trees.

I'm in Sf bayarea and Im closer to the bay and i have a nice microclimate zone 10a sunset zone 17. Walnut Creek is more inland than me. That is why they get much colder.

Literally nothing about these fruits got me excited. All standard boring stuff that can (apart from Citrus) easily be grown in much colder climates than what Bay Area has. I'm pretty sure it's possible to grow more exotic trees in zone 9b.
