My touring setups for the BMW R1200GS Rallye and the Harley Davidson Fat Bob 114. How the BMW influenced my choice of Harley and optional extras. Also why I love the BMW Vario Panniers, they are easy to use, practical and don't leak... Ohhh and yes the secret USB socket on the Fat Bob and of course the superb sound of that 114 Milwaukee 8 engine.

I love touring on my Fat Bob 114. Unfortunately, the pandemic cut my plans for 2020 down to only a couple of trips. But I have several 1-2 week trips planned for 2021. My favorite thing about touring on the Fat Bob is that I can strip her down when I get where I'm going and have a fun, naked bike to ride around on until I start heading back. Try doing that on one of the big touring cruisers!

Great review. After 30 years of bikes I've ended up with the same pair. The R1200GS Rallye sport and the Harley fat bob. Not sure anything can be a better pairing but I'm am seriously tempted by the KTM1290 GT as the perfect trio.

I have to say Excellent choice!!! I have the same combo, Fat Bob in white and GS 1250.

Seems that there are quite a few of us with a Fat Bob and GS in the stable.

Looking to buy a fatbob after a test ride last year. Glad I came across this vid for the storage ideas!

Harley have some even bigger backs you can fit behind the cissy bar, worth checking them our size wise. Hope you enjoy your Fat Bob once you get it...

Nice video, I went to the seaside today and saw plenty of GS riders. I can see why you have one, 90 miles on the dual carriageways with no screen did take its toll after a while. Keep up the good work

I was out on Fat Bob on Sunday with an open face helmet, much above 50 mph for a prolonged ride and it starts to become less fun! At 70mph it's horrible. With a decent full face Fat Bob is fine for all day riding, but not on dual carriageways, then again I try to avoid those on the GS too. Cheers...

I really like the chilled out way you make your videos. I really enjoyed that. I just had a break from editing one from today. A coincidence because I mention the rear end of the Fat Bob haha. I had no idea you can get that rack. One of my mates is going to like that. Keep up the good work. Yea my BMW boxes leaked. They replaced them all. Cool rucksack btw..

You are too kind, maybe it's all the ale!? Ha... I think what Fat Bob is missing is something to go just inside the mudguard, a nice reflector would help, USA bikes have this and do look better for it. I really wanted to make Fat Bob suitable for carrying some luggage before I went ahead and ordered the bike. The sales guy Chris at Newmarket knows his stuff about accessories and immediately recommended the removable rack/cissy bar... that plus the funky heated grips he recommended I was sold! The backpack is again really perfect for me as you can take it with you easily if leaving the bike parked. It's about knowing the people who know to get accessories right, as you said in your lights video; makes a big difference.

You can get a rear number plate bracket that goes under the Fat Bob rear fender. I found it online the other day. Possible from Germany.
@FenTour
@FenTour 4 года назад
Seen those and look to me a bit horrid, side mounted number plate is the way to go; so just need to fill the gap. BTW liked your FXDR intro... :-)

@@FenTour thanks. I'm very new at all this. I bought a gimble, but think I need to mess with it and set it all up. I'll get there.
@FenTour
@FenTour 4 года назад
Gimballs can help indeed, though if you have the GoPro Hero 7/8 the stabilisation is fab without, almost gimbal quality. I also have a DJI Osmo for holding the iPhone, I really should use that more often. The one used in this video is the GoPro Karma Grip, but I think it’s been discontinued.

As fars as bags go, SW Motech have some serious materials… And those sissy bar bags are genius, I had one on my sporster I never lacked room ! I wish I'll be able to afford a fat bob some day (though I love my Triumph Street Twin !)

Glad you're enjoying the fat bob, I absolutely love mine, I've gone for the stage 3 so you can imagine the fun you can have on it. I'm with you that you can still tour on this bike, as soon as the cv19 is over with I'll be going up to Scotland from lancashire, I intend to spend a week around Glencoe and Fort William, ride safe.
@FenTour
@FenTour 4 года назад
Oh yeah, Fat Bob plus at least Stage 2 = huge fun, stage 3 must be an even bigger grin. 😄 So itching to get out for a little tour here, don't think it will be too long now!! Depends when the B&Bs etc open of course, some may take a lot longer to re-open. Campsites will probably be closed too for a while longer, though in Scotland you can wild camp so at least thats an option. Cheers

Love the Harley and I wanted to ask you a couple of question about the rear end. I noticed that you have removed the rear scaffolding (bracket) that holds the licence plate. Whats the it like when riding the bike through a typical English Summer - rain? Do you get much road spay flicking back on to you?
@FenTour
@FenTour 3 года назад
Sadly without the backpack it’s going to spray your back if the weather is rubbish. I usually ride with the backpack tied to the sissy bar when on a longer run so any rain is no issue, I have a waterproof cover to go over the pack so easy to wipe clean. If the weather is rubbish I usually take the R1200GS, much better for mucky roads.
@karamlevi
@karamlevi 3 года назад
I hear you can use a license plate move to above the rear wheel at end of fender under the reflector... tends to stop the spray. Nice video. Take care. I also ride FatBob 114, orange n black. 2019. 🍻

How is that stock seat on a long ride?
@FenTour

It’s fine but one needs to stop and rest the backside after 1-2 hours max! I now have a bigger more spacious seat since this vid was made, but still need to stop every 1-2 hours.
