At the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo Ohio. What a lovely ship, and the members have done such a great job restoring her! launched July 1st, 1911. 617 feet long, 64 feet wide. Apologies for not getting the rear cabin and galley on the video, they were wonderfully preserved as well.

Beautiful ship. She’s lucky she didn’t have to pay a visit to the scrapyard!

Thanks for the tour Doc. Very impressive ship for 1911, and to still be around and restorable it is even more amazing.

You don't see that kind of luxury anymore!

Yeah, even if someone wanted to put all that paneling in a big boat like that, the Coast Guard wouldn't allow it anymore.

Great video work. Amazing woodwork stern. Needs only a 9 pool table.

I toured that boat a bunch of years ago before the rework had been completed. I gotta say it looks great compared to what I saw. Your video is great too. A little fast moving but just fast enough to get a good idea of all the hard work and money put into the restoration.

Thanks! It's just a teaser! haha The viewer should support the group and spend the day there for the full effect! We go once a year and bought memberships... even though we live 2 hours away and across the border.

Looks like the Edmund Fitzgerald, brings us memories doesn't it

When I toured the ship in 2010, they said the Edmund Fitzgerald was essentially identical, but larger-the designers has started with the plans for this vessel, then expanded.

You bet! My Sister inlaw and husband lived in Yellowknife for a few years. My wife went out to visit, and they toured Buffalo Airways and brought back some clothing for me and the boys!

here in Rock Island, we have the former Farmall works. It seems the workers would strike at the drop of a hat, thinking the works would always be there. They were wrong. I comment because of your avatar name, thanks
@FarmallDoctor
@FarmallDoctor 6 лет назад
It wasn't the workers.. it was the union pushing it. The union always had it out for Harvester, and in the end they won. They struck the light truck line at model change and they never recovered, and struck Farmall Works right during the economic crisis, and they never recovered. The CAW union struck Chatham Ontario several times and made it unaffordable to build trucks there. International offered to keep it open and build whatever they could, from army contracts to lonestars, but it wouldn't be at full production. The union said no, all or nothing, so the plant was closed and torn down.

Nice video, always fascinating to see inside these turbine engine rooms. Always wondered how these engines sound under operation, I suppose its quite different from a diesel engine, quieter maybe?
@FarmallDoctor
@FarmallDoctor 5 лет назад
They are whisper quiet! At least on the outside as a bystander. I've never been in the engine room while underway.

Sad really.....It is such great shape why is not still working? Is it not cheaper to fix a old ship than to replace it? My dad in law kept fixing anything that need repair on a 1968 Kenworth with millions of miles on it until 1996. It was VERY reliable by todays high tech troublesome trucks standards. A ship in this condition should still be working.
@FarmallDoctor
@FarmallDoctor 5 лет назад
Very few steamers left because of the higher upkeep of the steam boiler and machinery compared to a diesel engine, unfortunately.
@TH-xo4zx
@TH-xo4zx 5 лет назад
it does work, and likely is as reliable as the day she was made but its a matter of efficiency and speed, not to mention maximum carry weight, by todays standards and costs it is not profitable to run her for shipping goods, that is my assumption at least, i know little about anything bigger then a row boat. but is is surely more profitable as a tourist attraction, besides she is far too beautiful, not worth the risk.

Love the vid Doc! Great to see her preserved. I live down south now and disabled so the only way I get to see this is through vids like this.

Thanks Terry! Glad you enjoyed the quick tour. I make a stop there every year after I go to the National Threshers in Wauseon Ohio. They are planning on opening the upper deck over the rear quarters so that visitors can have a picnic lunch by the stack.

Interior nearly as ornate as the S.S. Keewatin and her sister ship the s.s. Asiniboia from the Canadian Pacific rail road shipping line(crazy right...but true) The Keewatin is still Afloat in Port Mc Nichol Canada after leaving sausagetuck Mi. were it was from 1962 to 2016 owned(to save it from scrapping) by Mr. R.J. Peterson. The wood work in both of these vessels are spectacular!

I hope to go and see the Keewatin soon! Thanks !

@@FarmallDoctor i call the Keewatin my " old girlfriend".... Been on a tour on it about 7 times. We miss it here in west Michigan......i missed it so much went to Canada to see it again. She was working for four years BEFORE the Titanic was made. Fire hazzard took it out of service. I wish Jay Leno( huge steam fan) would have bought it to move is car collection on his private yacht. Would have to wealthy like him to do it.

@@FarmallDoctor Considering the time constraint and the size of the boat. It appears to be a tough task. Every one else seemed to enjoy it. I am an operating engineer, so maybe I wanted to see more focus on the engine room. Thanks for the reply and keep up the endeavor.

Don't let your guard down in Toledo, it's gangland ghetto in most areas. Never walk at night. Never EVER drive or walk into any of the housing projects with that bad case of Europeanism you have.

@Brian Meyer Not strange at all. Toledo is a VERY VIOLENT city. We've had more than one murder per week this year. The gang crime here is through the roof and yes, getting lost in the wrong neighborhood here can get a person killed.

Obviously an amateur videographer as the the panning is way too fast to observe and comprehend the images. Not to mention the accompanying nauseous sensation. Had to depart, too bad. I would have enjoyed seeing the inside of one of these amazing large ore cargo etc. ships. Maybe I'll run across another video someday.
@FarmallDoctor
@FarmallDoctor 5 лет назад
So sorry for giving you a nauseating RU-vid experience. Hopefully you can go to Toledo and show us how to do it professionally ..oh... and you still have to keep the video under 10 minutes in duration.
