Tourist trap teaches me this essential life lesson

Join me today as I recap a trip that my girlfriend, Vivi and I took during Chinese New Year and Valentine's holidays. We visited the quaint coastal town of Hoi An, Vietnam, and what a surprise it turned out to be.
We were disappointed after our first night as we realised that the Old Town was simply a tourist trap. The next day, however, everything changed for the better.
Stick around to see our whole trip turn around as we come across a cute cafe, situation right besides a labyrinth of half-submerged coconut trees, and share a memory there that we'll never forget!

Not only have you not lost your editing skill, you have actually also stepped up in your story-telling skill. Quite a departure from your walk-and-talk style during your days in China. Very good effort, Oli👍

Absolutely true about the expectations when going to new places, when I went to Bali for the first time I fell victim to my own expectations, however when going to other touristy places like Phuket and Ho Chi Minh I had such a good time by going to smaller places outside of the tourist guides online, I could feel the city and meet the people

Right! I’m usually trying to go to places that are not so hyped up online nowadays.. then I don’t have any expectations at all, usually turns out far better that way

Hi Oli, Nice vid and place to visit. curious! What camera are you using using whilst walking, although the last 10 second (shadow) looks like a mobile phone?

Cheers Tony. It's between my phone, a compact Sony but mostly on DJI Action 4. I also noticed the resolution isn't quite up to scratch in some parts... I'll have to check my render settings.

Hi man, I have a lot of respect for your channel, but as someone who travels a lot in Asia, even to remote places in China and elsewhere, I really liked Hoi An despite the touristy facade, I ate very well there and found a certain charm during the day or in the morning, away from the flow in the evening. As for the round boats, I found that really touristy and an attraction on the side, as perspection changes from one trip to another.

@Oli Barrett - Bang on mate, true gems are always to be found OFF the beaten path, that's where the REAL soulful experiences of adventure happen!🗺 Those hyped-up, or well known touristy spots can often disappoint due to lacking authenticity, but that said some places are more varied than others in that regard as you'll know by now, eh?🏯 Immersing with those locals away from crowds is where the true magic happens of course, but that does require lots of facing fears with language barriers of course, a decent real-time language translation device can work wonders nowadays though, its fast improving that's for sure.. have you tried them out for size? 🪄 Can't wait for your next SE Asian road tale, Cheers!! 🍻 #TrueWanderer

Well I've been to Hoi An's old town "tourist trap" as you mis-describe it both before and after Covid and both times it was great. The food was not overpriced or bad, nor did I feel "transacted"/scammed by the locals. It was a welcome break from the other place you once championed so much.

Hoi An is full of touts. One of the reasons Da Nang is great is because there are few touts. The Da Nang local government keeps them in check.

Da Nang seems almost a bit too good to be true at the moment! I think it’s going to grow in popularity extremely quickly over the next few years.

@@Oli-Barrett I think it already would be exploding if their visas were good. Not even visa on arrival for North americans. No longer term visas if you're not an english teacher. They don't make it easy thats for sure, so people go elsewhere.

Try actually working for a change and don’t go back and join your father’s channel. People want up to date travel information and the most successful channels concentrate on food and travel .

Yeah, expectations vs reality. For me, the very first trip to Europe, the very first/last stop was Heathrow, London. For an American, the expectation vs the reality of London, putting it lightly, was disappointment.

Lee Barrett continued his medical treatment in China. Today, Lee Barrett looks healthy. Lee Barrett could live healthily for many, many more years after his illness was cured in China. Donations were fast and thick. Lee Barrett might not have survived, if Lee Barrett went back to Britain for his medical treatment. Wei Fang would have survived if Wei Fang had continued her medical treatment in China. Wei Fang could have her illness cured in China. It would be a disaster for a jet, a ship or a tractor to wobble. Bites from an Africana bobbejaan caused heavy damages, deep wounds, and it would take a very, very long, long time to heal. Only those in the medical profession know the truth. It would be unprofessional to comment about the medical profession in America, Britain or Canada. Lee Barrett is an honest and upright man, steadfast, trusted by donors.
