We take our food for granted. The average American doesn't know or understand the true cost of the plentiful grocery store isles we see every day.
The human toll of our commodified and industrialized food system is not far away and hidden. It is right down the road from us. Just outside of Orlando, in Apopka, FL, Jeannie Economos leads the local branch of the Farmworker Association of Florida, working tirelessly every day to bring awareness and justice to the people who are putting their lives on the line to feed us and our communities.
Former farmworkers like Linda Lee have heartbreaking stories of the back-breaking and strenuous labor of working Florida's vegetable and citrus fields. And on top of that, there is a long list of illnesses and death tied to toxic chemical exposure from this labor.
Pesticides used in the farmworker day-to-day have had a mortal impact on this community. We need to have an ongoing and honest conversation about what we are doing to protect these vulnerable and less privileged groups of people who are working in slave-like conditions just so we can have access to whatever we like at the grocery store.

Great video. Slavery is indeed still in existence in America. And Florida. It’s labeled differently, but at the end of the day it’s the same.

I have found many statements made in the commentary of this video to be baseless and unfactual. Additionally, to compare modern agricultural employment to slavery?...Shame on you. The information espoused in this video is either untrue or incomplete which is completely irresponsible.

I wish you can provide data before you commented. The DDT spell was documented, as there has been multiple studies of wildlife pesticide disruptors in Lake Apopka. Farmworkers who used to work in the north shores were not studied in the same way. About farm work, it will be useful for you to learn that farmworkers do not have the same kind of protections than other workers like overtime, rest time, sick leave, or health insurance. If you know how to read, the average income of farmworkers is between 11k and 16k. Right is not slavery, but it is not a job like you or me sitting that keep us in front of a computer with A/C. You should be a little bit more empathic and educated.
