We take our food for granted. The average American doesn't know or understand the true cost of the plentiful grocery store isles we see every day.
The human toll of our commodified and industrialized food system is not far away and hidden. It is right down the road from us. Just outside of Orlando, in Apopka, FL, Jeannie Economos leads the local branch of the Farmworker Association of Florida, working tirelessly every day to bring awareness and justice to the people who are putting their lives on the line to feed us and our communities.
Former farmworkers like Linda Lee have heartbreaking stories of the back-breaking and strenuous labor of working Florida's vegetable and citrus fields. And on top of that, there is a long list of illnesses and death tied to toxic chemical exposure from this labor.
Pesticides used in the farmworker day-to-day have had a mortal impact on this community. We need to have an ongoing and honest conversation about what we are doing to protect these vulnerable and less privileged groups of people who are working in slave-like conditions just so we can have access to whatever we like at the grocery store.
