I got a lead position at a new employer , where it has brought me nothing but negative unprofessional behavior coming from personal emotions. Such as , not giving eye contact when speaking , physical behavior where if I enter a room with staff in the room they will immediately leave the room or if seated in the same room , they will purposely give me their back or look in the other direction to not face me. Also, speaking negatively on their previous lead when I’m around and I question why they consistently bring up someone who doesn’t work there anymore.

I’m in Texas. I had to quit my public school teaching job last May because of a hostile and abusive environment created by another teacher in my department. The principal sent her to “workplace communication” workshops for 8 weeks after I complain several times, BUT as soon as she finished them, she started right back up again, bullying me. More than half a year later and I’m still traumatized, burnt out, and unemployed.

Giant red flag: nepotism arrangements. When the boss' wife/husband works in the office. Especially if they're not qualified for the role. Run far, far away and don't ever accept the job. Nothing good ever comes out of that. Or any form of nepotism really (friends, family members, etc). You, as the employee, will always be "wrong". Not to mention, if you have a legitimate complaint about a spouse, you can't exactly bring that up to the boss. Nepotism harms morale in the office and is a sure sign of a toxic place to work.

One of the biggest mistakes in my life was sticking with a clearly toxic employer before they fired me. I felt quitting made me look weak and it means they get the last laugh. This is simply not true; if anything the opposite is true. When you quit a toxic job you are telling them that you do not need them and will not tolerate their abuse. By sticking around and letting them fire you, you are fueling their delusional belief that they can treat you like a pile of trash they can toss out when they feel like it.

Everybody falls under a protected category. The categories are race, gender, disability, age, etc. People mistakenly believe that means that you're only protected if you are a member of a minority group (e.g., a woman or a person of color). Not true. If somebody discriminates against you for being male or white, then that is also covered under discrimination law because that's discrimination based on the protected categories of gender or race. But I do agree with you that it's appalling that workplace bullying isn't illegal in the United States, like it is in so many other countries. It's really important for people to lobby the government to make this illegal. There are organizations is trying to do this, but they need support.

Branigan Robertson, lucky me, I found you on RU-vid! Your video's are educational and informative. I introduced them to my husband. My husband's been with the same company for the last 10 years. About 7 months ago, he was introduced to the new regional, who would be overlooking the property, the VP, new manager and assistant. Right away, not just my husband, but a co-worker as well, were treated so wrong. It was a complete take over and Not in a good way. My husband has endured abuse everyday by the managers her assistant, the regional himself. You see, they all know each other from other places of employment. The regional brought them to the property and from that day on, they totally dismantled everything, my husband needed and used to do his job. In other wards, they were sabotaging the way he performed his job duties. Wouldn't even allow him to make use the copy machine. They would always say, they are following the regionals orders. To make a long story short, while these people lie, are conniving and planning together, he and his co- worker get written up and suspended. Then they are invited back to work, only to suspend them again, over the same stuff. My husband went to HR, are you ever right, when you mentioned, HR will cheat you. HR decided to call herself and the regional "HR business partners" they do the investigation's. Being the fact the regional is friends with these other people, of course they never find any wrong in them. I wrote a letter to the HR persons boss, telling her how concerned, I am for my husband. I was able to sit in a meeting with my husband and the Chief of HR...her title. I told her, my husband is a changed man, I worry about his health, the abuse he takes on and so forth. She told my husband at the beginning, she would support him, that's not true. As you stated in this video, HR will change and defend ( side) with the perpetrators than the victim. This is exactly what happened today. Today, he was written up and given a final warning. All based on lies. He just returned from work, on Wednesday after his last suspension. The people who should be written up, are not. His co- worker upon return from his suspension, was written up 3 times, by the manager and HR agreed with it, all based on the managers lies. I saw on the BBB's website, they have no affiliation with the company and rate them an F+. The way the company treats my husband, effects him tremendously. At one point, my husband had to take a medical leave, the stress became too much, intolerable. As his wife, it pains me inside to watch him go to work and come home after being grilled all day, the look on his face, the stress is written on his face. He feels weak, sick to his stomach, we spend hours and hours without sleep. Meanwhile, the Chief officer of HR said in her investigation, she didn't find any harassment. Unbelievable! She has no clue, she is not my husband, she has not walked in his shoes. Sorry, this is so long.

Why do corporate bosses think they can have a say in what you do outside of the office and can actually tell you to stop doing it ? I taught an evening exercise class once a week and I know that the bosses thought badly of it. One boss would always try to keep me from leaving the office at 5pm on the day that I taught. I would have thought it would have been highly regarded. It meant that I was health and exercise oriented and that I excelled at something enough to teach it. One of my senior bosses had an interest in engineering and would write occasional articles about it for magazines ( for no money). Nothing to do with our professional work and no conflict of interest. Our managing director found out and told him to stop doing that. So why is teaching an evening exercise class or writing a few articles at home something that a corporate boss feels he has the right to control ??

I suffered constant yelling from the employees and the managers told me I had to accept it because of the union. The yelling and working so many days in a row affected me emotionally. I wasn't trained properly so I made mistakes that were used to fire me. I tried to sue the Hospital but several lawyers in Massachusetts told me there was nothing to do because of the at-will nature of the job. I complained to HR, and they didn't do anything. I am a straightforward person (it is a cultural thing), and several employees used this as an excuse that I was offending them. My manager didn't understand this and mentioned it as an excuse to fire me. The poor training and my lack of experience (which they knew) affected my professional career.

She threw a fit and said I didn't trust her and forced a meeting with the directors of our department as well as her and my team lead. The meeting was her trying to throw me under the bus and the director basically acting like it was a waste of time and telling me where to find policy links. My supervisor then had a 1+ hour long meeting with me saying my communication is borderline insubordination (I have never been a bad employee, in fact I go above an beyond). Since then, she seems to have sabotaged my employee review which affected my merit increase and I am not the only employee she bothers. I know its not illegal, but I have never had a manager "hover" like she does with micromanaging, and throwing fits if we don't type out "good morning" and "good night" at the start/finish of shifts. Just last month she was streaming her screen and started typing to a coworker that he needs to "talk less during meetings", when I reached out to him to offer support for being embarrassed in front of our entire team he thanked me and said the funny thing was she never actually sent the message...just kept re-wording it in front of us.

Thank you, Mr. Robertson; I have been busying myself with writing a book. I am Canadian, and I know you practice in California. Thank you for your efforts in educating a legally illiterate individual. I had been employed by the City of Ottawa for twenty-nine and a half years. I had distinguished myself as an elite operator, winning six annual bus Roadeo competitions. After twenty-one years of accident-free driving, I accepted a position in the training department as a Relief-Instructor. Aside from my workload doubling because HR failed to acknowledge an additional attrition rate of six hundred operators hired between 1974-75-76. Five colleagues and I were enrolled to attend a weeklong course facilitated by an outside agency, the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA). January 21 - 25, 2008. 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Unpaid homework until 1:00 am to 2:00 am with a one-hour commute to a different locale. This pace proved overly stressful for me due to how the assignments were distributed. I was assigned to convey the summary of the five previous segments facilitated by my colleagues. My assignment was the total of all the information my colleagues had previously taught. Each day was taking a more significant toll on my cognitive abilities. I succumbed to the ravages of a nervous breakdown. It was prescribed by my family physician to convalesce at home. The ailment progressed to include the trifecta of mental illnesses. Severe Depressive Disorder, a form of PTSD, Anxiety Disorder, up to and including Panic Attacks, and Bipolar Disorder. A far more significant effect was the loss of my family. These disorders proved too much for my spouse of thirty years. She initiated the separation and subsequent divorce. Three attempted suicides sealed my fate forever. These mood disorders have a way of diminishing my resiliency, self-esteem, and self-worth. My three children and seven grandchildren are now estranged under the tutelage of their mother/grandmother. A man's purpose in life is to find his purpose in life. I lost my employment via a pre-emptive constructive dismissal. No employer has the right to position its employees. In contrast, they can be held criminally liable for teaching in contravention of the Highway Traffic Act under the deception that an exculpatory agreement existed in the archives of City Hall. I attempted to secure a copy of the agreement to no avail. The Union Representatives were complicit in that they proved themselves to be inept. I was demoted to my substantive position as a transit operator. I could not accept the term offered as the illegal maneuver persists today. There's a statute of limitation on my case. If so, I am vehemently opposed due to the ongoing unlawful practice. How can a statute have any forbearance on an issue when 1700 employees continue to execute the illegal maneuver? Agencies and individuals who can no longer attest to having plausible deniability. From the training department Supervisor (3) in seven years to the General Manager (2), claimed it was all water under the bridge. Law enforcement, Chiefs of both divisions Ministry of Transportation. No reply The overseer of the training program, the Driver Certification Executive Officer (DCEO), responds, "We're gonna have to keep an I out for you. Ontario Ombudsman. In a Unionized environment, I could not avail myself of a competent lawyer citing a conflict of interest. Want to hear toxic? I worked in a booth for a company, for 10 years. After about 4 years, my machine was vandalized, my car was vandalized. My tools were stolen. This company has cameras everywhere. But they wouldn’t say who was doing it. When the verbal harassment started, I knew. Complaints to management went nowhere. When they sabotaged my booth, the cut the ac and disabled the heater. Over 120 degrees in the summer and 0 degrees in the winter. One time a pipe broke on a frig. The gas came in my open window and knocked me out. It was ammonia gas. When I complained to management they did nothing. I complained to the union, but they said the company can do what they want. When I called OSHA, they never came. I started getting sick, but didn’t know why. Then I got demoted to lowest job. I kept getting sicker, and had to retire early. Found out I had cancer after I retired. 5 things could cause my cancer. Radioactive exposure was one of them. I overheard a driver saying they had been dumping radioactive waste for years and there was a way to shut off the detectors. the doc said for a test, normal people are a 10. They get worried at 20. They look for cancer at 30. My numbers were over 5,000. Then last year he told me l, my numbers like people near Chornobyl! No lawyer will touch it, saying I waited too long. I just found out about it last year as what the cause was. So, the company gets away with it?

Though I was a volunteer, I have been reaching out for help regarding a dispute since June 2010. I didn't know what was going on in my office for almost four years. After six years, I began to see what was going on in my office. I also began to see what my supervisor was doing while she was working at my office. Each time I reached out for help, I was dismissed or shut down. I was also told to move on, to let it go, by a volunteer coordinator who had the authority to put a stop to my supervisor's conduct. When I thought I was moving on, that same volunteer coordinator would approach me, she would tell me what my supervisor was doing in the office. Then she would tell me that I had to move on. This is abuse. Based on what I know and what I learned over the years, I don't think I'm the only victim here. There are others. In early 2022, my father told me that there will be dire consequences for you if you try to resolve this dispute. Based on all this, I'm convinced that I have no friends; I have no family; and I have no allies. I was also told that, "As a volunteer, you have no rights. You have no legal recourse. You haven't been financially hurt by this dispute." No one advised me in my dispute. No one informed me of my rights. I have been physically sick over this dispute since June 2010. Each time I'm force to revisit this, I'm made to be the bad guy, each time, when I didn't bring it up. I'm an EMT. I became an EMT at my organization's request. I don't need this abuse.

Physician Assistant here. I got written up for a simple misunderstanding between nursing and I which we resolved. The medical director decided that it was an 'exercise in poor judgment". The issue that he chose to write me up for was he me asking a pharmacist a drug question was me asking nursing for medical advice (i asked them to contact pharmacy about a drug). My boss (clinic director) was in the meeting. At our clinic, I have repeatedly asked for double books to be vetted through me (double books are not in our contract) and yet scheduling always adds double books without asking permission. Then in meetings our boss asks us to be leaders while not allowing us any autonomy. Another example is me asking to switch patients with other providers if I am seeing their patient and they are seeing my patient. My boss pulled me aside and told me to stop doing this. It is beyond ridiculous. The medical director has made disturbing jokes about firing a provider (PA like me or NP) right before and after he fired another PA. This was also after my write-up. Feels like a toxic environment. I'm in a governanment contract and not fulfilling it would mean owing tens of thousands of dollars.

And then there is the corporate activity that attempts to reduce employees by combining jobs with other jobs reducing the processing cycles of work. Example, a group of employees have had assistants or secretaries as part of their job for several decades. Then, the company eliminates those assistant jobs and puts those responsibilities onto those employees who had them. The work loads increased, productivity decreased and the incoming work loads remained the same. After time, the job was very difficult to complete as usual but then the company used the poor work results to cut pay increases/bonuses etc. At some point, many of those in that job group left the company which made it even worse for those who stayed. Then, were those who quit replaced? Not one for one which made the volume of work even worse and then we can talk about those out sick and on vacation and how production cycles got damaged. These managers and corporate greed infested VP's simply have no ethics nor do they give a hoot about their clients/customers as this activity progresses. There's more, at bonus time, the managers got larger payouts regardless of how poor the workforce was getting. I'd call that Toxic going to hostile in just a few weeks.
