Episode 9 of maintenance you can do yourself at home.
This one is very easy and straightforward.
Drive belt replacement + idler pulleys replacement.

The drive belt replacement interval is at every 100,000 miles .
The Drive belt pulleys should only be replaced when noisy.

Another great tip a msitake i made in my previous toyotas is if the belts match the same length , and everything is right and it still doesnt fit even when moving the tensioners. Remember to go as far right with the bar then move it left to move the tensioner to its full potential, if you under shoot it wont ever fit, that tensioner can move a good amount.

Nice tip with the wedding ring. Ive never worn one just for that reason. Seen a fellow mechanic fry one to his finger back in the day working with a battery.

FYI you can buy the same belt the Toyots uses which is the Bando 7PK2150 for $8.55 on rock auto, shipping is $5 , as of July2024

Great video Viking! My 2015 4runner is just at 98k miles and drive belt, spark plugs, coolant flush, thermostat and pcv valve will all be done when it hits 100k! Thanks for sharing 👍

One more tip I was taught it to “bump the ignition” after installing a new belt vs starting right up just Incase the belt comes off a pulley. Another solid video my brother 🤘🏼

@Nwwoods Went alright. The bolt in the back of the alternator was not fun. Also, the 1st alternator I got from Oreillys had to be returned, because the pulley wasn't turning freely. Got it done though!

Red threadlocker is worthless when exposed to heat, like the engine and radiator. Where does it say to use this in the service manual?

Great video. I have an 03 Sport Edition that was my wife's. We where thinking of selling it but I just could not part with it, even though its a 2wd its still a great SUV. I'm doing the belt later on today and this is a great how to since the 4.0L V6 is the same layout as yours. Even has the same miles. Thanks, you just got a new subscriber! 🙂

@@VikingsGarage Got it done. The only thing I did different is I took off the skid plate so I could route the belt easier. I figured if I can do the belt in my 14 Lancer ES, I can do this one! Thanks again. 👍👊

As usual, a good vid from the Viking. Question: it looks like you have a factory service manual, where were you able to get one? I don't care if it's hard copy or electronic. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!! I usually print out all my instructions from “TIS” which is only Available to Toyota Technicians. BUT for a small fee you can always have access to it thru ALLDATA . 😉

There’s some good brands out there aftermarket, me personally I would go OEM and have that extra piece of mind.

Great video again. My 16 4Runner giving me a whining sound when accelerating maybe it’s my idler too. Question the idler on Amazon link u had provided is same parts at Toyota delearship right. .? After watching ur video I want to change mine too Lol.

Hey Viking have you ever replaced the front corner lights? How do you access them, through the wheel well?

I actually have replaced mine when I replaced the headlight assemblies… but I can confirm that the only way to get to it is only thru the wheel well. Remove that wheel well fender cover and getting to it will be easy. 👍🏻

My 2010 4Runner has 192k, I was thinking about changing out the tensioner and idler pulleys as just preventative maintenance and peace of mind. Would you recommend waiting until there is noise coming from them? 🍻 V

At that mileage, change at least the pulleys. 🍺

How did you get the lowest pulley near the oil filter housing off? I tried everything and ended up stripping that bolt.

So why didn’t you replace the tensioner,just curious you are so thorough with everything. Just wondering. I liked the video,Toyota wants 450.00 for the belt replacement. I’m sure I can do this myself. Great job!!!

To replace the belt tensioner the A/C compressor will need to be removed. I’m not replacing a perfectly good tensioner specially knowing how involved it would get. I try to keep these videos simple and easy to follow. Belt tensioner will need its own entire video. I appreciate your support!!

Is it normal for a idler pulley to have a slight movement. Just bought a brand new 2024 4Runner TRD ORP and I noticed the idler pulley has a slight wobble.

Should a normal idler pulley have slight play? I’m referring to the one closest to the alternator. My 2023 4Runner with less than 400 miles has slight play in the idler pulley . Any info would be greatly appreciated

Because I don’t replace just that pulley, I replace the entire tensioner. 😉

@@VikingsGarage I understand the the tensioner difference now. I just replaced all the idlers bearings by pressing them out with a rented ball joint press. (Timken 6203-2RS). 😀 Takes all the fun out of being a parts changer, I know.

Also, you never stated that to be your reasoning; you stated that that's what you usually do and that's what your method is, never did you say that the diagram wasn't on the shroud or hood. Go back and listen to your own video. I've been working on cars for over 45 years so you can keep that "Snarky' little remark to yourself.
