Toyota 4Runner - 3rd Gen vs. 4th Gen V8 Comparison (Reliability, Specs, 0-60...)

We take a look at the pros and cons of each generation, as I drive both a 1998 Toyota 4runner and a 2006 Toyota 4runner with the 4.7 liter V8. These trucks are different in many ways, but each has their strong suits and weaknesses. Are they reliable? Are they good for towing? Which one is better for off roading? How do they compare?

Which one would you choose?
@AdamSmith-gs2dv
@AdamSmith-gs2dv 4 года назад
I'm biased because I own a 2000 SR5 but I choose the third gen. I like the way it drives (it drives like a truck but it rides very smooth for a truck), I like the interior (pretty much all your gripes about the interior were fixed in the 1999 upgrade), and I LOVE the exterior styling, IDK what it is about it but third gens (especially the post 1999 ones) still look good today. I asked my friends how old they thought the car was and they all said it was 10+ years newer than it actually is. Also even though black is a bitch to maintain I think the color REALLY works on the third gens and looks much better than white or silver. IMO the 4th gen (minus the Sport edition) looks too much like a mommy mobile.

Adam Smith haha, that’s ok if you’re biased. They’re both awesome machine. I have to agree with you as far as how the 3rd gens drive; it’s definitely a little “trucky”, but it’s very controlled and, dare I say, fun? Thanks for watching the video my dude!

@@NotSoHandyCarGuy It is a fun vehicle to drive in it's own way. It has a unique driving style that took some getting used to but I like it now after I've had the car for 3 years. My 2000 is in near mint condition now, it came from Washington so it has no rust underneath and it only has one noticeable dent on the hatch from hitting a pole (saving up to get that fixed but next thing on the list is ball joints and a frame repaint to prevent the rust issues you talked about). The interior is spotless and looks brand new after I reupholstered the seats and steam cleaned the carpet.

Adam Smith That sounds beautiful. There’s nothing like west coast or desert cars. If only cars didn’t rust out like they do in New England here... especially older yotas. Sounds like you got a good one 👌🏼

Loved it so much i sold all my jeeps and started looking for 4runner, sequoia or basically anything with the v8 and ended up with a 2001 sr5 with only 172k miles for 3500. Both of these are some of the coolest and most understated SUVs ever made. I have an early V8 and it cracks me up that it looks like a nondescript soccer mom car but can go just about _anywhere_. Has every creature comfort you need, and the tightest turning radius of any car I’ve ever driven. Had to buy a new RHS exhaust manifold but that’s the only card the Devil has tossed into this hand

Great video, I am trying to decide right now between the two. My only vehicle is a 2019 Camaro SS, and I want something I can daily/take my friends out in and possibly camp, carry kayaks, etc. After your video I think I'm going 4th gen, even if it's a little more expensive and a little less visually appealing. The extra space, smoother ride, more power with the V8, better interior make it worth it to me, it will only be used for minor offroading so depart/approach angles aren't the biggest deal in the world, and even then a lift is possible which makes that a non-issue. Great video and thanks for making it, subbed!

After some you tube research and lots of luck I bought a 2002 4 runner with 187000 on it , I searched along time here in west central Florida it seems everybody wants Toyota trucks because of the dependability and value so even if you do find one in really good shape with car prices are now up there , the one I bought didn’t have any maintenance paperwork or history with it but it did come with an assortment of Disney land stickers on the back window and chocolate and coffee stains on the back carpet ,I’m think’n soccer moms ride , the last oil change sticker said it was done in Sebring fla, so that was my first thing to take care of , it does a have a sticker when the timing belt was changed at 67000 mi. So that will be on the list of things I want to take care of right away along with valve cover gaskets , and a leaking right rear wheel seal , it’s got the original radiator in it and I’m thinking of changing that also just to be safe since they have been known to leak into each other mixing tranny fluid and coolant , it runs remarkable for a 20 yr old truck I paid $4600 and with the maintenance up grades and having a buddy that was a Toyota mechanic and has his own shop I think I scored , this truck is super clean outside and under , I have a feeling that we’re going to be together along time !

I've found that KBB values, at least on the 4th gens, are way off the mark. You won't find a v8 AWD for less than 10K, even over 200K miles. If you do it either has sever frame rot or some mechanical issue. Private party is even higher at around 12 to 15K.

I own both a 3rd and a 4th gen. I love both of them. But there is no comparison between power. The 3rd gen is slow and comfortable Where the 4th is actually snappy with its power it’s comfortable and definitely has a better look to it. Far as comparing the off road capabilities of the two both of my 4 runners have 33” tires and a 3” lift if I had a rough trail in front of me I’d chose the 3rd gen the 4wd just work’s amazing in that model if I was choosing a daily/ light off road vehicle I would choose my 4th gen .

@NotSoHandyCarGuy
@NotSoHandyCarGuy 4 года назад
That’s actually interesting to know! What year was it introduced? To my understanding, the fourth GEN could only have full-time four-wheel-drive because of that center differential and extending yolk in the drive shaft.
@CalebCissna
@CalebCissna 4 года назад
Not-So-Handy Car Guy It ran from 1996-2002, all the way through. From ‘96-‘00, it was only on the Limited trim. In ‘96-‘98, it used a three position straight shifter, with 2Hi, 4-Hi Fulltime and 4Low. It had a button on the side to engage part time 4Hi and lock the center diff. From ‘99-‘00 it used a J-style shifter like the one in the video, but again used a button to lock the center diff on the side of the 4WD shifter. In ‘01-‘02, the rear diff lock was discontinued. This freed up a switch on the dash. All trims (SR5 and Limited) got fulltime 4WD, with a lockable center diff using a dash mounted button. They all used a J-style shifter, with no button on the shifter itself.

I haven't found an SUV yet that I would cause me to give up my TRD supercharged 3rd gen 5-speed manual with a factory rear locking diff. @trentonclark3689
@trentonclark3689 3 года назад
I was initially looking for a '05+ for the VVTI but ended up with an '03 since it was clean, rust-free, just had the timing belt done, and was the right price. It is lifted on 33s, with sliders, full Prinsu rack, skids, plenty of extra weight, and it still has plenty of get up and go here in the NC mountains. Has no problem passing on interstate uphills. When I was searching, I read a ton of responses indicating that the difference is barely noticeable between the non-VVTI and the VVTI V8s when accelerating. If I were you, I'd go for the cleanest, most well-maintained T4R instead of buying based on VVTI. Good luck with the search!
@NotSoHandyCarGuy

Yeah, I’ll hustle mine around the backroads. New shocks and stiffer front springs. The AWD versions do help keeping traction. I’ve never owned a top tier sports car/sedan. But have had decent handling cars: 01 IS300, 03 G35, 08 328i, 10 Genesis 4.6L, 14 Avalon XLE; as well as sport bikes. 4th Gen 4.7L AWD, will never beat those cars in a curvy road race between 2 committed drivers. But if I’m hustling on a curvy road, unless someone is committed even if in a superior handling machine, usually most everyday drivers aren’t wanting to try and keep up.
