If the diodes or voltage regulator have burned out brushes won't fix it. Most of the time brushes do it though.

Usually by the time they get to us the alternator isn't charging at all. I've never really done any in depth testing on them. If the alternator isn't charging we check the brushes and if they're worn out we try them before ordering an entire alternator.

Do you use Toyota oem brushes or is there any good aftermarket? I wish my alternator wasn’t mounted on the bottom of my 2uzfe!!!

I'm not sure, we use the reman Densos regularly. You might see if there's an old school alternator shop near you. They're becoming a dying breed

@@OTRAMM thanks, I saw some in the community use DC Power Engineering but I'm betting a denso reman is hard to beat.

I've had 100's of Toyota vehicles through the shop. I've probably seen less than a dozen alternators that were bad.

No real testing other than spinning it to feel the bearings. So far I've only had one alternator that brushes didn't fix so it's been a pretty safe gamble. If I had installed it and it didn't work I'd have just swapped the old brushes back in and ordered a denso reman.

@@OTRAMM thanks, I have this same problem now, so am just wondering if this would sort it, got the alternator out and the brushes are making contact with the spindle, no grinding or sounds from the bearings. So hoping swapping the part with the brushes would fix it.

@@DOBERSTAFFIE hey bro, did you end up fixing the alternator by replacing the brush? I have the same problem. Brush is making contact but alternator sometimes charge and sometimes dont.

Yes, it fixed it. When the brushes get low they can stick and only make intermittent contact.

@@noryhair7461 I got it out and changed the brushes over, simple enough job, but it was not actually my alternator to blame, the batteries were failing and giving off weird readings, they would hold a charge for a day, then die and when the car was running , they would make the warning lights on the dash come on and could not even produce enough power to eject a CD from the CD player. But had enough power to start the car, very strange! I thought it was me, but it fooled a couple of local mechanics that thought it was my alternator to, But it was the batteries after lots of troubleshooting, the simplest thing was actually causing it. I swapped my batteries and since then not had a single problem. Get an autoshop to do a battery test for you if you don't have a tester yourself and see if they are causing the problems. The other thing it can be is the little component that the plug goes into, it is the voltage regulator and sometimes they were out to, again it is simple to change just a couple of screws and you could do it at the same time as the bushes if it is the alternator that is not working properly for you. This truck is long gone. I've never had to swap a Toyota regulator. If I ever get one in I can film it.

Tips for front wheel bearings

We've got an older video on 100 series suspension under AHC replacement. The biggest tip is to just cut the old shocks out instead of fighting them.

Lexus or Toyota dealer would be the best bet.

I've never had one not be brushes so far. Not sure how the symptoms would differ.

@@OTRAMM thanks. I had assumed if the regulator was bad too much voltage would be let through (my experience with solar panel regulators). My trucks charging came back to normal after putting it in neutral at a light and holding revs at 3k for about 5 seconds. I've heard worn brushes can get stuck back in their holder so maybe thats it

@@TheBeedeegee That's why some people tap the alternator with a hammer. Embarrassed to say I used that crude method on a mate's old Fergie tractor a few weeks ago. Fixed it. Brushes often jam when they are shortened by wear. Had to emphasize it's not a fix. He'll need to do the brushes (and potentially skim the commutator) for a permanent fix. But it sure was an easy diagnosis of his issues! FWIW, I didn't use a hammer but a rubber mallet. Decorum please!
