Toyota Camry 2020 - Triumphant Return? (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Toyota Camry is comfortable, economical, inoffensive. I sort of like it, and I’m ready to turn a blind eye to some minor inconvenience. How many though?
If you live in the States, you don’t care, but for us Europeans this is a step up after years of the Avensis. Toyota Camry disappeared from Europe in the early 2000s, when it was completely replaced by the 2nd gen Avensis, a somewhat smaller car, but designed with European buyers in mind.
Without the estate (or station wagon) and with large engines the Camry just couldn’t compete in the D segment. Now the Toyota Camry replaces the Avensis sedan, and the Corolla estate is big enough to pick up the Avensis estate buyers. The Camry is slightly longer than the Ford Mondeo, and has similar wheelbase. It is also considerably larger than the VW Passat or Peugeot 508.
Starting price: 40 000 euro
As tested: 43 000 euro

My 1976 Corolla drove past 300K miles without major repair, then the 2000 Avalon XLE, 1984 Camry LE, 1985 Supra, 2003 Highlander XLE limited edition, they all near or past 300 K miles and in good condition when sold. We’ve bought 4 Toyota Camry (1st Generation 1984, 2003 V6, and 2 2005 LE 4 cylinder and they are extremely good cars even better than my BMW 5 series in terms of reliability and longevity. However my wife loves her Avalon XLE Limited Edition better than any sedan we have. The nice thing about TOYOTA is that they can last a few hundred thousands miles without major repair and parts and service aren’t cheap but still cheaper than all other brands.

I'm glad Toyota offers so much of it's safety systems as standard. Didn't know they were so crap though ... I've driven the Corolla and Rav4, but didn't have enough time to thoroughly test that ... too bad. At this point I'd rather buy a used Passat than a new Toyota. One saving grace are the amazing hybrids. Really smooth and frugal! Don't mind the CVT either - even though motor journalists always have a hissy fit about it ..-.

@bogdanmongol9518
@bogdanmongol9518 4 года назад
The new hybrid powertrain with 2.5 dynamic force is faster then 5 series with 2 diesel 190 hp and A6, also 2 diesel 190 hp. But maybe you need a RS, M, something. For normal people, is more then enough. Is a 5 metres saloon, not a sports car.
@alliejr
@alliejr 5 лет назад
Good review. Fascinating to see spec differences in Poland (and all of Europe?) versus the US. Interesting that you find the driver aides to be primitive. In the US, Toyota was the leader in this regard and the first to offer widely and standard. Having driven Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Korean and Porsche examples, I cannot say that Porsche is better. Also, my recent Macan folding mirrors did NOT work with ignition off, so not sure Toyota is only offender.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 5 лет назад
Offering something as standard doesn't make it good. In Europe car manufacturers are forced to offer many safety systems. Some make the effort and offer something useful, others offer less developed systems. Japanese car manufacturers are usually in the latter group. As for the folding mirrors, perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I realise the button to fold the mirrors usually doesn't work, when the ignition is off. Unless it is paired with the door lock. In Toyota it is not paired with the door lock, so what should have been a simple press of a button turned out to be going back to the car, turning it on, pressing the button, turning the car off, getting out, and locking it. Again, no biggie, unless you're parking at the airport, and you are in no mood to fuss about.
@nidjo057
@nidjo057 5 лет назад

I think you’re a little biased here. You tend to compare it to the more premium cars in the same segment, like BMW 5-series, but the reality of it is that the equipment that you get for similar money, is similar. Want a fully speced car, that has a tiny winny more equipment than the Camry from another manufacturer? Good luck spending 10K+ more on the other one, money that I could spend in getting a second city car. I’m really interested in what cars do you think are better than the Camry in this class and for this money.
@MarekDrives

Actually I compared it to Passat, 508 and Mondeo. There is no mention of BMW. It is reasonable priced, but outdated on arrival. More so than the current Mondeo.

In my experience it's far more satisfying to own a smaller car that makes you happy than a bigger one that is bland and no joy and with far inferior infotainment system and usability. I've already seen one. If I were a taxi driver I'd seriously consider buying one.

Nice review however from the documentary tone it appears to be a biased one towards European brands.

I prefer my car to be built out of quality materials and that it has good, pratical solutions. Anything called "driver assist" I really don't want, because I never use any of them anyway. Sadly, you can't order your car without them if you want a car with good all-round specifications.

*For British **_potential buyers_** 5½ Litres per 100 KM = 49.58 mpg - Not exactly great when my ICE (Mercedes B200 CDi Sport AMG Line) can easily achieve 60 mpg+ and on a long run with careful driving best 74.3 MPG and is considerably cheaper initially with high retention values. (Toyota in UK from £29,995)* Footnote : In general, a new Toyota hybrid battery for the Prius costs about $2,200 - $2,600 without labor depending on your model year.

For this size of a car 50mpg is quite OK. A few months ago I did the same motorway trip in the new B200d and the new Corolla 2.0 Hybrid, and the B-Class was more economical at higher speed. I'll have to see how a 2-litre C (or better E-Class) would perform on the same route.

You're comparing two different categories, this doesn't make sense! And for a car this size this is a very good value. Side note: A Toyota is far more reliable than any modern Mercedes.

The trim line in Europe is terrible. Car is loaded with feature consumers may want to avoid such as led lights or all that flashy electronics. But essentials such as electric seats are only available at highest trim and no memory option for seats. I will consider camry in 20 years.
@MarekDrives

Why would you avoid LED lights? They make a difference at night.
@hrh2092

@@MarekDrives Yes, they make other drivers blind. Plus, their replacement is difficult and costly. It is unnecessarily expensive and complex.

*Toyota and Lexus appear to have pulled off the Greatest con-trick so far in the 21st Century with the Misleading **_Self Charging Hybrid._** They should be more honest as this is deceitful in the fact that all **_charging_** is done by the ICE. A PLUG IN HYBRID that would do up to 30 Miles (50 KM) on all electric would be far better in that over 90% of journeys are 30 miles or less, and could be recharged overnight at home from a normal outlet socket.* From Toyota : The engine in hybrid vehicles like the Prius run exclusively on gasoline, while the electrical portion of the power system never needs to be plugged in for a charge. There's no cord and no waiting. You can fill up at any normal gas station anywhere. The Camry Hybrid system differs slightly from Prius.

I like current Toyotas appearance, but only as hybrid, without it Toyota is nothing. Poor assistance systems are annoying and shame nowadays. Also all driver's information I find not intuitive. As for mirrors the same sh... had in rental Suzuki Vitara, sometimes started driving with folded mirrors...

Somehow it's a sad car to own. It's like Toyota didn't even try to make it good. I wouldn't want to buy a car where I don't feel the engineers had any passion for their job.
