Thank you for this, I got a 91' Celica GT coupe (not the hatch sadly) last september when I got my new job. Has a bad valve cover gasket, needs the steering pump and lines replaced, new gas lines, new rockers, an alignment, and new brakes and she'll be top. I got all the stuff together for it before I had a workplace accident but I plan on doing bits and pieces as I can. This guide is a life saver because every other video just had it already done or disassembled. Thank you. I'm in love with this car more every time I get behind the wheel.

I just replaced wires and plugs in my 96. The boot of cylinder 1 tore off in the well. I ended up having to just break it up into a bunch of little pieces and blow it out with air. OLD rubber

@MaximumDIYGarage Год назад
Wow! That’s what they do when they’re 20+ years old. Glad you were able to recover the pieces! You don’t want that in your engine!

Was hoping you could help me. Trying to put in Spark plug gaskets because one cylinder is leaking but the only replacement for a 97 Celica GT convertible doesn't fit! The old one is curved but every replacement is straight . Any thoughts? I have pics but don't see anyway to attach them to this post.

Make sure you are getting the gaskets from Toyota parts dept to ensure proper fit. Some Celicas came with a 1.8l engine and some with a 2.2(GT). The part numbers may be different, so I wonder if you are getting g those for the ST model instead of GT?

@@MaximumDIYGarage Thanks. I'll check into it.

front side always fails first from my experience, from the heat/cool cycles of the exhaust. Glad I came across this video to a quick touch up course. Im doing the exact same job + new wires on my 96 Camry. 5sfe is a very reliable engine. Not super fast but overbuild. Good solid engine. Did the this Celica have balance shafts?
@MaximumDIYGarage
@MaximumDIYGarage Год назад
I am not sure about the balance shaft, good luck on your project! Timing belt replacement video coming out soon
@JasonLuther1
@JasonLuther1 Год назад
@@MaximumDIYGarage nice man! I did my timing belt about 2 years ago. The oil pump gasket had failed and was hemorrhaging oil. Went ahead and replaced water pump and timing belt while I was at it. Thats the only "real" failure this engine has had for me. My valve cover has been leaking for a couple years now. Figured Id finally get it taken care of. I mean if it's leaking oil..... then it has some right? haha

Pretty sure Celicas and Mr2 5sfes don't have balance shafts think only the camries got em
@sdrawkcabmodnar

@@TheJEJster It's about the year. I think the 5s-fe engines got the balance shafts in 93 and on but i may be wrong it may be 94+

What was the foamy stuff you used for part of the cleanup? Have you ever tried aluminum brightener/cleaner like they use on aluminum boats? Thanks.
@MaximumDIYGarage
@MaximumDIYGarage Год назад
Hi Alex! I used oven/grill degreaser spray. I have not tried the fancy aluminum brightener. Good idea!
@alexmouzas

@@MaximumDIYGarage I have only used it on aluminum boats and it worked like magic. Don't let it sit more than 15-20 seconds at first..play it by ear after that.I am looking to buy a Celica convertible now.

Hey mate, what size socket are you using for the rocker cover bolts. I am reading it is 30mm, but that seems to big.

Hi Robert! That is correct. They are 30mm, big boys!

Would this be the same process on Toyota Celica 1.8 ST?
@MaximumDIYGarage
@MaximumDIYGarage 2 года назад
Yes, sir the engine is slightly different, but overall process for a valve cover gasket replacement is exactly the same. Take your time. Let me know how it goes.

I have the 99 GT model 2.2 but I don't have a strut bar??
@MaximumDIYGarage
@MaximumDIYGarage Год назад
I think the strut bar is optional or aftermarket in some countries.

Hey there again man. Just finished doing this to my car. I put everything back together the way it was suppose to but car isn't turning over. Have any idea what it could be? I have the 94 toyota celica Gt.
@MaximumDIYGarage
@MaximumDIYGarage Год назад
Is your battery drained? Did you connect all your ignition wires? You need a spark, fuel and air to make combustion. I bet it’s a wiring problem
@RelentlessYouthMinistries
@RelentlessYouthMinistries Год назад
@@MaximumDIYGarage I don't think so. When turing the key the stereo & dash lights came on. And all the spark plug coils where in the correct place. One thing I did notice was the plastic piece that holds the spark wires in formation so they're not all over the place broke off. But I don't think that was connected to something that caused the issue.
@MaximumDIYGarage
@MaximumDIYGarage Год назад
@@RelentlessYouthMinistries sounds all right. So does the started turn or does it not respond to you turning the key?
@RelentlessYouthMinistries
@RelentlessYouthMinistries Год назад
@@MaximumDIYGarage It seems like the starter isn't responding to the turning of the key. Because when I turn the key no sounds comes the starter. I feel before I would be a able to hear a click. But this time it's silent.
@MaximumDIYGarage

@@RelentlessYouthMinistries charge your battery and check all the electrical fuses. Did you disconnect your battery when you did the valve cover replacement? If you didn’t, you like lay blew out one or few of the electrical fuses. Check the fuse box under the hood and under the dash.

Have you ever had trouble with oily spark plugs on your Celica?
@MaximumDIYGarage
@MaximumDIYGarage Год назад
I haven’t, but this is one of the reasons to replace the spark plug well gaskets on your valve cover along with the valve cover gaskets. I have dealt with it on my Xterra. Took spark plugs out, used rolled paper towel to absorb the oil and then replaced the gaskets and the spark plugs. Good to go. I’ll have a video on that coming out in a few weeks. Thanks for watching!

@@MaximumDIYGarage Sounds good! I've had trouble with mine 3 times in the past 3 years. Switched out the gaskets & still having the same issue at the moment. It's with same two spark plugs too. I'm wondering if it could be something else? But still going to replace the gaskets & see if that fixes the problem.
