Welcome back to the channel
In this weeks video I show you the process of replacing a rusted out flange as well as a gas tank heat shield on a 2003 Toyota Corolla 1.8 L Automatic Super reliable econobox. Basically you get to see me weld some pipe in to replace the flange and drill out a broken bolt to of course to attach the new heat shield. These are both jobs that you can possibly tackle by yourself in the driveway. Although after watching this video you'll probably not want to especially if you live in the rust belt. I hope you enjoy the video. If you do please Subscribe to the channel to support me. Also if you would like the exhaust hanger tool I will leave a link down below to my Amazon affiliate page. Don't forget to hit that Subscribe button :-).
As always thanks for watching and we will see you in the next one...

What's the part number of the rear exhaust heat shield?

@8:04 Arrrggghhhhh..... You reminded me of when I got my 99 Solara 5 years ago.... All 10 of the bolts that hold on the skid plate underneath the radiator snapped. I wish I knew about the center punch idea then.... I had to drill out all 10 and then helicoil all 10. Not much fun. But the hell paid five years ago has me benefiting myself in the last 4 years. It may be that it's just a good idea just ofdrome all out anyway so you know that at least the threads are good. Hard to find a place that sells thread chasers.

Yeah I completely understand how frustrating it can be to drill out bolts. If you're up in Canada you can find tap set at Canadian Tire and down in the states I would imagine they would have it at Harbor Freight or like a Pep Boys or something. But I'm not 100% sure about the states. Of course there is always a Snap-On truck but buying a thread chaser set will cost you a small fortune LOL. Good luck my friend.

I believe the original pipes are stainless, so i’d think clamping a new stainless piece in with stainless clamps would be better than welding, especially if you don’t clean the original pipe first. Any idea how long those welds will last?
@JimmysAutoClinic
@JimmysAutoClinic Год назад
Hey my friend. The original pipes as far as I know or not stainless. They are however better quality than what you get from aftermarket. As for welding depends on who's doing it, I can tell you that my welds last usually the life of your vehicle.

What a great video!! My heat shield rusted off. I don't have one anymore. Is that OK? 2005 Toyota Corolla. Thanks!

It's not something that I would recommend driving without for extended periods. The reason being is if you do get a exhaust leak even a small pinhole exhaust leak can melt a hole in your plastic gas tank which would potentially be severely disastrous. The chances of it happening are hardly unlikely but you don't want to be that 1% or who has their car blow up because it was missing it shield. I hope this helps. Good luck

@1:36 As pertains to the aftermarket pipe: that's pretty much how it was in the first half of my life (I am 57 years-old now). Be lucky to get a third season out of the muffler shops back in the day. Yeah, they'd warranty the muffler, but none of the labor and other pipes and fasteners. However, back then a typical muffler job on V8s that I drove was only around $200 so you can inflation adjusted to about $1,000 today I guess. But I was blindsided that it was $1,600 10 years ago quoted to fix my 1999 Toyota Solara V6 exhaust system from the end of the manifold on back.

Yes it's really something now the cost of exhaust parts or just Parts in general. Really that's everything on the planet now unfortunately I feel like we're all being taken advantage of.

I absolutely love it one of the best tools I've invested in. I also have a KD one that has a Slimmer back but it's much more flimsy so it doesn't really do well with the tougher hangers.

Hey Jimmy! I don't have one of those amazing machines that makes a tube wider. What size of tube would I buy at an auto parts store to make this work?
@JimmysAutoClinic
@JimmysAutoClinic 11 месяцев назад
I think the stock size tube is 2 in or 1 and 3/4. However it really depends on the engine size and whether you have had the parts replaced before. Generally aftermarket tends to be slightly different than oe size.

Looks like it's time to change the car, not the exhaust pipe.

Unfortunately most cars in the rust belt look like they should be replaced a few years after purchase.

I'd be careful about washing that car.....the rust seems to be the only thing holding it together!

We don’t have the rust here in the DFW area of Texas…just melted tires this time of year! Had a ‘85 VW Jetta..every summer the fabric in the door panels would fall off from the heat!
@JimmysAutoClinic
@JimmysAutoClinic 2 года назад
I can only imagine what that's like. I've seen some pictures of the tires melting and whatnot and I was equally as surprised as I imagine you guys would be when you see the type of rust we got to deal with sometimes LOL
