As an electrician myself your relay fix was the first thing I would have done but this information is gold to the layman out there! You guys are doing an excellent job at creating real grass roots content for the real 4x4 enthusiast who doesn't have bucket loads of money or sponsorships. Most problems can be fixed at home with little to no monetary outlay. Well done!

If I ever have issues with OEM relays and fuses I'll often grab a handful of similar from the same make at the wreckers. Not a bad idea to keep a couple spares in the car.

Hey Patrick if you find your oil pressure sitting lower than it normally would I would highly recommend looking at your big end bearings if you have no history on your engine? , the early factory turbo 80s knock out the top bearing shell and by the time you notice your oil pressure sitting lower it’s time to look at the bearings . You can do them in the car , roll in a set but when you inspect the old ones you must look at the upper bearing that’s the one that takes all the load , and you can’t pre order the bearing because Toyota put all different size bearing in them to get proper oil clearance, and make sure you get a set of rods bolts too , when they were new we used to look at the big end bearing every 100k . Keep up the good work

I feel the same way, I really don't think you can do any wrong if you're after a tidy example with either a GQ/GU or 60/80 series. I'd be buying the best example in my budget whether it was a Nissan or Toyota. The 12ht and 1HD are fantastic motors, but a TD42 will still get you around Australia 10x over.

Good video Patrick. 👌 You can also take the same approach to the master power window switch if it ever gets to the point where it won't wind up or down as they have a contact setup too. Some electrical contact cleaner and a small file on the contact points to get them flat and free of carbon deposits and it's as good as new.

This happened to me leaving to go home in the middle of nowhere at night. I pulled the relay out and ran wire to make the headlights work to get me home. I ordered another relay from Toyota but found that by pulling the relay apart you can actually repair it quite easily. I’m still using the existing relay and have a new one as a spare. Loving the videos mate 👍

I have had similar issues with the fuel tanks in my 90 series Prado as they have the same set up. All fourx4 spares sell on line and you can get brand new solenoids. My suggestion is replace both if one is gone. They are getting to old to get second hand ones and have them fail soon after. You also do not have to drop the tank. There is no pumps inside the tanks. The diesel pump on the engine draws the fuel up. The solenoids should be mounted just in front of the sub tank and are easy to test.

Good one Patrick.👍 There's a great satisfaction being able to fix original parts to work again. And I've always been a believer if you look after your vehicle (use it hard but don't abuse it), and always get it serviced regularly, it doesn't matter how old or how far it's travelled, it'll continue to be reliable. I love my 80 Series. It's a keeper.
@kabaottoemulsion1869

Yep, not many parts are available for Older cars. Liam`s approach was correct. You need to fix the part unlike new cars. My truck does not have heard light relay but switch only. I too lost head light during dark day but when I opened switch, contact went down into its plastic casing because of heat so I pushed it back and reinforced with glass fiber plate. It is still working! Of course I have ordered spare part before I dismantled it just incase... You should clean the contacts of relay and put contact grease. Nothing wrong with Chinese relay, just buy few! WHY not put that on club permit? Reg costs only around $90. And you can drive upt to 45days and can be extended to 90 days. Mine is 1996 so just made it\O/

100 per cent. There is something about cars. I've had my GQ TD42 for almost 14 years. I'll never sell it. About the 20w60 oil... I tried it once and the TD hated it. Penrite make a 15w50... over 350,000km of use in my GQs and its been brilliant. I've noticed people get away with the 15w40 oils in Vic and NSW in the 400,000km engines but in Qld, 15w40 is a bit thin. Just my thoughts. Great videos keep it up!

Great video. Using thicker oil though sounds like a band aid for the old oil pump. The system shows better pressure, because it's difficult to squeeze thicker oil into passages that have tolerances for the oil with lower viscosity. Usually manufacturers would list multiple grades of oil in the manual that can be used according to the ambient temp, it's possible that 20-60 is within a range allowed for the hotter climate. I hope your engine will last another 500k km and not shoot the main bearing because of the thicker oil. See you on the trails.
