Bumper Chop! It has finally happened.
First off I fully understand this modification isn’t for everyone’s taste.
This is one of those modifications that has been on my mind for a long time. The amount of times I have ripped the back bumper of the Fortuner off was starting to become a joke. So I needed to do something about it.
Initially I was going to get a steel replacement bumper with a wheel carrier. Then I started thinking about custom options. And that’s when it hit me, this is my chance to try a bumper cut! After all the worst thing that could happen was I stuffed it up and needed to get a rear bar.
We did find a few issues along the way.
• The factory tow bar cover was broken and flapping around. A few stainless steel bolts fixed this issue.
• The bumper couldn’t be cut as high as I wanted up to the wheel as there was body behind the bumper. It would have looked strange. I am pretty happy with the cut.
• Air bag lines needed to be relocated.
• If I cut the back higher it would have been floppy. I left the 3 tabs that secure it to the factory tow bar to fix this.
My initial idea was the factory rear tie down points would hit the ground before the bumper and this would fix my problem of ripping it off. Once I had cut it I decided there was opportunity to do this better. I decided to install a set of rear recovery points.
We ended up with All Terrain Industries recovery points for a NP 300 Navara to fit the factory tie down point bolt holes. The shiny red recovery points add a little something. They are bigger so it will only help in protecting the bumper and it’s an actual recovery point not a tie down.
Overall I am happy with how it turned out and all up it cost me less than $100 including the recovery points. It may be modified further down the track but we will see how it plays out.
