Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series 2024 review: 4-cylinder engine tested as new LC70 gets automatic option

The 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series update is a big deal in a number of ways, with the largest being its introduction of a second turbo-diesel engine option: a 2.8-litre four-cylinder unit shared with the Toyota's HiLux ute and Prado 4WD - and it comes paired with a six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.
That's right; the LC70 is finally available with a two-pedal set-up, but it comes at the cost of four cylinders, with V8 buyers having to continue to exclusively make do with a five-speed manual gearbox - if you're able to even take delivery of one, but more on that in this video.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Stephen Ottley gets behind the wheel of the updated LandCruiser 70 Series range at its Australian media launch to find out if the new engine-transmission combination has improved the breed. And yes, he'll also talk about the 'new' styling.

Troopy has 2x90L tanks = 180L, so massive touring range. 5 star ANCAP is for single cab only. The Single cab had an updated strengthen chassis to meet this for the mines/fleet buyers. Others are not 5 star.

Gr8 video!!!! I purchased a 70 series Toyota Land Cruiser in 1984…. It was a short wheel base unit…. I paid $34k in NZ$….. it was an excellent car to use in my construction company!!! I had up graded from a 1972 FJ 40 SWB Land Cruiser which I had dropped a 283 chev V8 into!!! The biggest problem with the 70 series was that it was a one unit body system. If you damage the vehicle you could not replace individual sections!!! Unlike the FJ 40…. Also the on road drive was like driving a Bronco, horse, very bouncy!!! But I sold it in 1986 for $36k!!! A brilliant investment!!!! But the best thing about the 70 series was it was a is a work horse!!! On the farm, down a coal mine or in a construction site… it did the job!!! You wouldn’t take the new Defender down a coal mine or onto a farm…. It’s to pressive!!! Regards Ian 👨‍🎤🇳🇿👍🎄🎄

Sure, its offroad, "go anywhere" prowess is a key feature why so many buy the 70 Series. But two other key features you missed mentioning are its impressive durability in very tough conditions, and its bush repairability - a reason IMO, why it is still offered with manual wind windows. And all of these is why NGOs in many developing countries makes the 70 Series their go to vehicle.

Let's hope the turbo version performs well, one of the key features for Toyota engines was their underpower delivery, compared with the power offered by engines with the same displacement offered by other manufacturers. Having a “relaxed” running engine was one of the reason Toyota engines last so long.

@Kierdziol 6 месяцев назад
@@sydgerald 1VD-FTV is also turbocharged and quite modern compared to inline four diesel motors offered by Toyota when 70 series launched.

Many years ago I drove FJ45’s in the PNG Highlands. They were as rough as could be, but could go almost anywhere with their huge thirsty (originally a pre-war US design) petrol engines. The Land Cruiser 70 Series is ultra modern and superbly comfortable by comparison! Great review, thanks.

This 4 cylinder 70 series cannot beat the V8 version of 70 series, not even close. But this 4cyl will surely fill the market gap. Its V8 engine and manual gearbox make this vehicle even more lovable. It's a feeling that binds us to the vehicle. And the exhaust makes some of the best music I've ever heard.

Where the V8 will be better is being under stressed and that’s where longevity comes from. The 4 pot may perform better, but it has the wick turned up more to access that performance, and it can’t last as long like that.

What is being bought is sure engineering for over landing and off-roading. It's not a suburb cruiser. Useful for mining, farming and other rural services.

You need to check facts before doing videos. Troopcarrier has 180L tanks still - 2 x 90L so has the best range of pretty much any vehicle on the market. Also you need to understand torque - V8 develops max torque at 1200rpm - much lower than the 4 cyl which means better drivability and better fuel consumption in tough going.

99% of idiots, acting for 2.8L, don't even understand the difference between true engine testing and testing for marketing purposes. For them, even a 1.5L engine would be 'cool, awesome, does the job, it's ok mate,' if a good salesman is in front of them."

@@motorsportfreak1 More like costed, G-class Pro haven't been sold anymore in years (to private customers). It's one of the civillian versions of W461 - G wagon that isn't equipped with luxury stuff Daimler added to W463, as the W461 purpose was to be sold to certain companies and to army. It got replaced by W464 recently (which isn't stripped from comfort equipement like its predecessor.

Is the long waitlist due to excessive demand, Covid19 driven supply shortage, or just Toyota telling lies? Covid19 supply chain delay is essentially over at this point.
@carsguide

There is a long list of back orders to fill, with this prompted by a combination of excessive demand and the knock-on effects of supply-chain issues. Cheers, CG

the day you will get a 4-engine EV offroader in a decent price (and they will come soon), all this LC-nostalgia will be gone. mainly because of TCO.
@Kierdziol
@Kierdziol 6 месяцев назад
Which won't happen soon considering the battery weight in electric vehicles. Because You'd want to have big range (especially in Australia) in offroader and that means bigger batteries. Even hybrid offroaders (check Wrangler hybrid) are noticeably heavier compared to their gas conterparts. You don't want that much added weight in offroad vehicle.
@bjelinski1
@bjelinski1 6 месяцев назад
@@Kierdziol sure, but you very often know where you are going, what conditions you can expect. This is why Mercedes and some Chinese brands build heavy off-roaders (the new G will have 4 motors). And BTW - it wouldn't surprise me that in AU people will take solar panels with them in the future - you can get even 1kW/m2, panels are thin, you could take 10m2 with ease, which could charge you within one day ;-)
