I owned a 95 MR2 Turbo for a decade. To me, that is a MR2. The frameless glass on the door, the vent behind the driver, glass roof, front wheel to hood height, extra large dimension in the back. It's very similar in design, just new for next generation of cars. One thing I would appreciate they do is add a usable trunk for two weekend bags. This was extremely nice to have in mine.
I had a 1991 MR2 turbo for quite a while, and I ended up making the biggest correlated mistake that I’ve ever made and I sold it for 350 Z in 2003 😢. If this is in fact, an MR2 then this would be a true successor to the second GEN because the third GEN MRS was horrible and there’s no way that that true successor. I love the exterior but how do you feel about the interior?
It's crazy how you can actually feel the effort and passion that the tram put into the car. I feel like almost no other big mainstream manufacturer did, even the likes of BMW and Audi.
Mr2 without a doubt for me. Lotus Emira was also my very first impression. Also, John over at Driven said he spoke with Lotus PR and was told there will be a less expensive version of the Emira to follow, and now I am thinking Toyotus. Maybe, 300hp+ dual motor 500+ mile solid state eMR2?
My wife’s and my first car together was a 1987 MR2. During our honeymoon to Victoria BC, we met a group of individuals looking at our car which turned out to be one of the owner’s of the factory that built it. It was an incredible experience.
Always loved the MR2, an affordable mid engine pocket racer. Was my dream car for many years back in my days. However this being a 100EV that just spoils the fun.
I would absolutely love an ICE or hybrid system in this with a manual transmission! I totally understand that electric is faster but there is absolutely no emotion and it just goes fast but doesn’t sell it in any other way and that’s why I currently own a GR Corolla CE 😊.
Agree , many of todays sports cars are trying to get rid of the manual transmission. Porsche tried doing it & they had to bring it back after 6 months. Acura got rid of the manual transmission for around 5 years then brought it back with the new Integra. Sports car manufacturers finding out enthusiasts want a manual transmission ! BTW I drive a 2016 Mazda MX-5 Club soft top with a 6 speed manual.
That concept-car looked great (I do love my present FR-S gen1); what I need is an off-road capable 4WD/AWD vehicle, however. Also, current Tacoma 4WD owner and on waiting list for a GX550.
That under bottom level accent lighting which looks very cool, won’t last long in normal use, will get scraped off at road to parking break-overs, need to omit the lighting aspect and raise bottom several inches. Nice looking car 👌
If it is an MR-2 successor it would probably be called the GR-2. The front end and certain angles sort of reminds me of a modern reference to the famous TS020 race car Toyota raced decades ago.
Hi David & Kirk! I agree with 100% of what you both say. I appreciate you both and I will add or reiterate that I would love to see this in a naturally aspirated eight cylinder or six cylinder engine would be fantastic like the engine and the LC 500 but just in the rear of this vehicle This vehicle and the Mazda on my favorites as much as this is flashy this vehicle in this video I still put the Mazda number one and this vehicle number two for the show this is been so exciting I don’t want this Japanese car show to end… I studied the Japanese culture at VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY I just wish I could’ve had these videos to show my class to extend knowledge of their culture of vehicles. Peace be with you both. God bless you and all that you do thank you 1 million for bringing these videos to all over the world thank you thank you thank you.🇯🇵🤍❤️🇨🇦 Respectfully Submitted, JimmyUSAF 🇺🇸✈️⭐️🌎🇮🇹🙏☮️💜🚘🚖
I had a 91 MR2 turbo as one of my first cars, and I loved it. For the new one, I love the side profile, but I'm not sure about the front and back. They look really visually busy, and not in a good way...
That's cool! Does the commonality of the following features, which are characteristics of the i8's aerodynamic design, indicate that Cole's experience and knowledge are being utilized in the current aerodynamic design philosophy? ・The use of aerodynamic devices on the front bumper and rear diffuser to reduce aerodynamic drag. ・The use of "active aero" to control the flow of air around the front and rear of the body.
Constructive criticism alert : Is it because of the background noise that your audio is clipping because in both your videos and Kirks, the audio is clipping, but in one of the last videos it wasn’t. I was in the eye. Enjoy the info and chemistry you both have. With that new 32 bit float help in this type of situation… I think it’s the RODE likes that have that now…that being said, I know that’s a lot of money to spend when the rest of your videos are perfectly fine when they are in your normal environment.
It's another cell phone on wheels, how disappointing. I owned a MKII for ten years, it was a great car, affordable, fun to drive, and very reliable. This won't be any of that.
There is one detail we don't talk about regarding these EVs. I hate the idea of blinkers buttons on the steering wheel! But the fact Toyota decided to put one on each side of the yoke makes waaaaay more sense thanks to the steer-by-wire technology! Reaching those buttons will not be a struggle. Really, pause the image at 5:40 and enjoy the position of each physical button and see how ergonomy is still important for legacy manufacturers! I'm sorry, but they are not paying to catch up! They are just cooking really good stuff! And it requires time! And from what I see, we won't be disappointed!
Very nice. I hope Toyota offers this in an EV variant. I had to bring my Toyota Highlander for its first repair service yesterday. I am out $455. I am so tired of the costs of repair and maintenance of a combustion engine. I do have a 2023 Camry. I only bought it as an interim until the redesign Tesla Y or 3 is releaded. Anyone I know who owns a Tesla swears by the lack of maintenance it requires - the frequent wear and tear of tires is the one complaint. I will only listen to Tesla owners to get their review and not by those who will review the car that don't actually own a Tesla. What will sell me my next car is the lack of maintenance it will require. I hate having to go to he dealership to get my cars fixed, because I don't trust indeprendent mechanics.
I had the original MR-2 and it went 92,000 miles before I had a problem. I then had a 2003 Spyder which I drove for 8 years. In my opinion, this is the next MR-2. It's too small to be a Supra.
My rule of thumb is- if a car is on display at a show or on line has no mirrors or the super thin side mirrors, then odds are it’s a concept. That said the interior screens and this body seems too exotic for production. But geez, if this gets built and less then $50K, then I would buy one.
Looks like a work of art . Also looks like a nightmare to pay for damage repairs . They don't make them for economy of ownership , but for sales appeal and bling . Minor accident , totaled car . Henry Ford was so much smarter than any automaker today .
make it sub 1200kg 2 seater mid engine rear wheel drive with the gr yaris engine with either a 6 speed manual or dct and price it around the same price as a top spec mx5 rf club and you will have a killer of a car.
I remember how I was excited about the Supra concept until Toyota decided to make the front end look like a Platypus instead. I can assure you that if this is a concept that makes it to market, the real thing will look much more sedate, and nothing like this.
Definitely MR2, I think the Celica is being held close to the chest because it will release before this MR2 does, the current gen Supra ends production in 2025.
The MR 2 that we are looking at in this video is way way way better than a Mazda , the MR 2 is very attractive gorgeous car I owned a 2004 MR 2 every where I went they say it looks exotic I love it
Great review Davis/Kirk, if Toyota could bring this to market as a dual platform for ICE and EV to would appeal to both markets/buyers and would payoff in spades for them and the owners that order them, with composite materials it will stay lighter and have no rusting issues like conventional steel body cars do, Toyotas design studios are over flowing with talent 👍
I’d get where the Supra ideas keep coming from. This has mid engine proportions so it makes more sense for it to be an MR2. This looks nothing like a Supra and doesn’t have any of its classic GT proportions. People complain enough about the MK5 not following the MKIV design, this would be an absolute drastic design change from that.
David and Kirk, it is great to have your perspectives from the manufacturing side and from the dealer side. That MR2 is definitely different from any other vehicle currently on the road.
Owned both the first and second gen Mr2’s. Like the design, but not thrilled with it being all electric, or AWD! Don’t care if there is switch to turn off the FWD, still left with the weight and a complex drive system. AWD looses the fun and excitement of RWD in a mid engine configuration; and electric motors just don’t have a soul.
