It's time to make this truck into the rock crawler I've always dreamed of owning! To accomplish that, this thing needs to actually CRAWL. In order to make my truck as slow as I need, I've decided to build up and install a Trail-Gear dual case adapter style crawl box, which utilizes parts from an old Toyota Pickup transfer case. While I had everything apart, I decided to also install a 4.7:1 gearset from Sumo gear, which will take this already extremely capable setup and make it into what will likely be one of the slowest trucks on the rocks. This will be a two part series, just due to the amount of work required. I hope you guys are as excited as I am!
HUGE thanks to Poly Performance for helping me out with this video, check them out if you're looking for crawler parts!

3.95:1 1st gear x 2.57:1 low range x 4.7:1 low low x 4.30 = insane low. I'm getting 205:1, if those numbers are correct. Regardless, this thing will be able to climb a vertical wall at idle without bogging. Its gonna be insane. Really looking forward to the rest of the mods. Keep em coming

Closest yet, but 1st gear is actually 3.83:1. Everything else is correct besides the final product, great job! Yeah I’m extremely excited to see what this thing will do with all that gear. I imagine I’ll want bigger tires before too long 😂

I think you now have 216:1 give or take. Also, Tom Woods now has a Toyota HD Shaft, it was recommended as I now have dual cases (but only with 135:1 final wheel ratio). The Tom Woods was made for that Utah Yota guy who chopped and swapped his FJCruiser. I also had issues with fitting it under the body, and had to do a 1 inch lift. I also am having a buddy install the frontrange t-case cross member, just to add some stability there. should fit.

Also close with the calcs! Thanks for the heads up on the TW shaft, gotta call them up at some point soon and have a chat.

Did you ever get around to installing this? I manual swapped my 4.7L Tundra with the same transmission you have in your Tacoma and I want to do the t case doubler with the low gears too so this video is awesome ⚙️

I actually don’t have it in yet, bunch of stuff has come up and I’ve taken a short hiatus from wrenching on the truck, much to my annoyance. This is high on the list though, I’m going to build the crossmember for it shortly and will definitely have a video on the whole thing

@@S0nnenberg oh sorry, thought you were replacing the stock case, not adding to it! You heading to Pilgrimage this year?

@S0nnenberg Год назад
@@michaelmcchesney1268 No need for apologies, totally understandable confusion! No pilgrimage for me this year, I've got a few other off-road events lined up around that time.

I had a Toyota hilux with the horrible bench seat in it, I swapped em out for Nissan Pathfinder seats I pulled from a pick and pull. You’ll have to drill holes and use shims but it’s worth it for a pair of seats that aren’t too expensive and better than the bench
@S0nnenberg
@S0nnenberg Год назад
Hey great suggestion!! I’ll keep that in mind…might be taking a trip to the pick and pull!

@@S0nnenberg also I forgot to mention if you find a 4Runner that’s the same generation as your truck then the seats will just bolt right in

Given you've got a '99 TRDOR with manual 1st gear should be 3.42:1, and t-case low is 2.57:1... Add in the 4.7:1 dual box & Stock crawl ratio 37.79442:1 Dual case 177.63377:1

85-95 4runner 4x4 rear stock driveline will fit your dual case setup

It’s possible, though with the 63s this thing flexes like mad and is quite a bit higher in the rear. Will still probably go custom!

Seth, totally unrelated but didnt have a clue how to get your attention for timely question burning in my brain. A while, while, while back you posted your upgrade from billy 51s to Icon 2.0. I was recommended by Shock Surplus to upgrade from 51s to Icon 2.0 to add more rigidity to my rear. Will the Icons be able to support more weight preventing me from bottoming out? How did they work for you, how was their longevity? THanks
@S0nnenberg
@S0nnenberg Год назад
Just saw your question! I still have those shocks on my truck, and they still work quite well. 10/10 on longevity. However, your leaf springs will be supporting the load, the shock is mostly just providing damping. The valving of the shock will play a slight role in how rough it rides, but if you’re looking for more significantly more support in the rear of the truck, you should be looking at heavier leaf packs.
