Toyota Tacoma Long Term Review (Not What You'd Think)
If you’re in the market for a new or used Tacoma, you’re going to want to see how well they hold up over time as well as its pros and cons. Is the Tacoma a truck that you’re going to want to live with or are there better options? With the extremely high used prices, you’re probably wondering if they’re worth the money. Take a look at this long term review of this Toyota Tacoma to see if it’s something you would enjoy owning. You might be surprised to hear what I have to say.

Speak for yourself. Many of us hand really bad experiences owning a 3rd gen Tacoma. It isn't nicknamed the "turd gen" for no reason. It was rated least reliable midsize truck for at least the first 3 years it was out for a reason. Howling diffs, rear diff failures, oil leaks, engine failures, high pressure fuel pump failures at low mileage, electrical issues, crooked beds, front diff vibration that was an issue that was never addressed in the 2nd gen Taco, etc.

I have a 2021 TRD 4X4 Off Road that I bought new, and I still have not figured out all the buttons, I remember that after the first year the dealer told me that if I did not buy the remote start feature (monthly fee) that it would automatically be turned off. Well it is 2023 now and I did not pay for that, and it still works, I live in a cold climate state so remote start is great. Do not buy that feature because it will still work, at least mine does.

I purchased a 2023 June 2023 and this is my third one. I had a 2019 and didn’t get it undercoated and rustproofed. I got the 2019 in April 2019 and two years later, there was so much surface rust, I bought a 2021, both were TRD Sport models. I loved that truck but never really used it, so, after buying 2 different Mazdas and a Jeep Cherokee, I went back to Toyota. This one I’ll keep even though the mpg is not very good. It’s not made for towing more than 4000 pounds through the mountains and use the ECT button if towing at all times or you’ll burn the transmission. Just fyi, the only Jeeps that are true 4WD, are the Gladiator and wrangler, the others are all wheel drive, another reason I dumped my Cherokee. I looked at and rented a 2024 for one week, gave it the Mercedes Benz challenge and it didn’t do so well. Toyota ate it by putting a 4 banger turbo in. Most people start the truck and go not giving the turbo the needed time, same as shut down, park, key off, that’s that. These will start to hit the service departments on a hook after 12-14 months of everyday driving. The Tundra’s are already stacking up in the service lane. Anyway, if you can grab a new 23 still, I’d get it, cuz these 24’s well, they suck!!

I traded in my old Nissan Frontier in 2016 for my Tacoma TRD. Best decision going to Toyota I've ever made. In all these years I've only had to do regularly scheduled routine maintenance, and the biggest out of pocket expense was buying a new battery after 6 years, and new tires. Gas mileage is great, between 19 - 23 MPG consistently and 3 factory recalls, one a probable loose bolt in the rear differential, frame needed to be recoated and the biggest one was when ONE owner complained his Tacoma would "leak" in the rain. They determined it was a defect in the gasket for the third brake light. The recall was that they completely removed my interior, even though I had NO LEAKS, replaced the third light gasket then completely cleaned, and disinfected the interior, and put it all back together like it was never disassembled!

Great Truck. I had 4 of these trucks and sold them for great trade in value and had one with 6 years 289K miles and still running. I have the Luna rock colored 2023 Tacoma, TRD 4x4 Off Road and its simplicity makes me love it more. I'm 6 foot 1 inch and very comfortable. I traded a 2019 Tacoma with 40k and got 36K trade in for my new truck! I noticed those who say "long term review" is 1-2 years, but I will tell you 5 years is a true blue honest review, but the only problem is all other trucks don't last that long or already have major issues. This is a OFF ROAD, so it's not necessarily fair to ask for it to be a smooth ride, it's not designed for it. My tires are Toyo and they are great! I make U turns at lights as well as cars or similar trucks. I will like to say that I will never own another type of truck, but unfortunately Toyota will not make V6 Tacomas after 2023. This truck is a TANK and DEPENDABLE. (period). I have NEVER had to struggle to tow under 6K and the transmission is a smooth as silk. If you don' love this truck, you're looking for a truck for a whole different purpose as a reason. I had 4 Tacomas and NEVER, EVER broke down or EVER had one single issue. DEPENDABLE.

I traveled alot for my jobs in Florida averaging 30,000 to 35,000 miles per year. I generally rolled out at either 2-3 years for a new Tacoma. Over the years I owned 7 of them from 1989 to 2007 and never had any issues at all on any of them. Strongly built, tough, and dependable. vehicles. Just pull your scheduled maintenance. When I needed to pull a heavy load I traded my 2007 Tacoma TRD 4X4 in ( begrudgingly) for a 2005 GMC2500 HD Duromax diesel 4X4 crew cab. It had 31,000 miles on her. I drove that tank for 16 years and now has 317,700 miles on her. I am pretty maticulous with maintenance. That old Cecil the deisel still gives me 17-18 mpg hiway and thats a 7,000 lbs vehicle. Traded her in for a new Tacoma SR5 4X4 V6.... added side chrome bars, picking her up a two days. Hope she gives me the same great service as my others.

I have a 2022 with 37,000 miles. Most, and I mean 20,000 plus miles, are off road. I live in a mountainous state. I hunt and fish and camp in the back country. This beast has had zero issues. I have put it through the wringer. The TRD package gives me all the capability I need to get in deep and pull off world class Elk hunting trips. I tow a camper trailer a lot. I have never had an issue. With better off road tires than what came stock, a miller/cat plate system to protect the transmission oil pan, and an OTT tune, this thing does it all. If you are thinking of a good truck that has real world off road capabilities, you cannot beat a tacoma trd.

I got a 2022 Toyota Tacoma sr5 with the v6 4x4 6 speed auto 4door and there is a slight like diesel clunk coming from the engine area it doesn’t do it often at all but it’s when it’s going in a uphill and you need more gas and accelerate and it makes that noise before it downshifts

I had 93000 on a 2016 ac went out 4 times and it leaked the interior was soaking wet on passenger side recall issue fixed the leaked but it still had a mildew smell. Driver seat uncomfortable it sat really lower and not very adjustable. Overall decent truck mechanically , I just didn’t like the ticking coming from the direct injection at first I thought it had valve issues. Timing chain was a definite plus.

@@chrisdrives8204 One Hub/bearing was replaced...can happen. The rear springs were kind of weak. One element of the leaf cracked. I replaced with new aftermarket rear Leafs. I think towing our RV 10 000 kms across Canada came into play. The aftermarket springs were much better for ride quality and better for towing. The rear drum brakes would seize on me when i would go to my camp...the mud and water would lock them on. After dragging the rear wheels in 4 lo back and fourth, they brakes would release. The mud flaps were too long and when reversing, was easy to rip one off. Toyota addressed that issue in the gen 3 Tacoma. One other failure after many years was driver heated seat burned up. Estimate to repair was $2 000. I said no thanks. The radio had issues with the screen going blank...due to excessive corrosion for the antenna base and mounting hardware. The hardware was replaced 3 times. So, the cost of repairs over 8 years was around $2300 CAD....That is not terrible. Way cheaper than any GM or FORD we owned. The power train of gen 2 Tacoma is bulletproof.

All that extra bullshit electronics you find in most Ford or Chevies isnt there. Later down the line this can be a huge money saver as electronics are so expensive to replace when they go out. Kicking the tires on 2013 Taco Limited with 89K miles, one owner, clean carfax, but being sold by a dealership for $25,500, it is immaculate and well taken care of. I wanted a pick up to use for transporting light cargo and medical equipment, both city and highway miles and I of course understand the Toyota reputation for their longevity and have test driven all of the new mid size trucks, Ranger, Colorado, Canyon, and Frontier. For $4 or 5K more than this I could buy one of those used as well or new base model, possibly. Real dilemma deciding since they all offer good things but all have their flaws. I really need a cargo mover that will last and a vehicle that my 18 year old son can drive and make delivery runs with me. I am older so he would end up with whichever vehicle I choose. I can’t stomach those cargo trucks like Ford Transport. New they are insanely high-priced, used they all have extremely high mileage. Thoughts in buying and using the 2013 Tacoma for light cargo duty?

I will keep my '21 till it dies in 25-30 years (when the 4th gen Tacos have all died long before, mine will still be going). Nothing wrong with better mileage and power in the 24's, except adding the turbo... The life span is going to be drastically reduced. Im not willing to spend $50k on a truck that is only going to last 100k miles. But, thats the way we are heading. Its the "throw away" generation. They dont fix stuff anymore. Winter tires 265/65/16 with highway Artic Claw studded tires. The 16'inch wheel & tires are larger by 1 inch height & probably heavier. As soon as they wear out I'm going 265/70/16 lighter & probably better for suspension. Lift = I did that on my 2020 2/1. I'm reminded of the horse-drawn wagons in 19th century mining operations. Most had teams of six mules or horses to pull the loads of rock and ore from the mine pits. Imagine the mining company announcing it would save money and reduce the need for more animals by placing just two horses or mules on each wagon. Yeah, it would not be long before they are dead. That's what Toyota is doing. Their Tacoma has been a great truck, but it has increased in size and weight. Now comes the government EPA, whispering in Toyota's ear or maybe twisting their arm, and Toyota announces they will offer only a 4 cylinder engine for this vehicle. But it's okay, they say, they will crack the whip on that engine by putting a supercharger on it. Well, it won't be long before that engine dies an early death, because it will require much higher RPMs to get the same power that the long-lasting V6 provided.

I own a 2023 Tacoma sr 4x4 double cab. It currently has 5,700 miles. My complaints so far are an off center steering wheel which was fixed properly, only after my 3rd trip back to the dealer, the engine ticks oddly, last week I took it intonthe car wash for tge first time and a rubber piece on the roof about 3 feet long flew off as there was nothing holding it down, it clunks, often times won't go into over drive an on the interstate 75 mph speeds I'm only get 12 mph and I don't tow and I baby it. My old, made in Japan Tacomas were great. This made in Mexico Tacoma is a desaster. Oh and I nearly forgot to mention my $99 rattle can spray paint job full of imperfections and thin paint. Needless to say I am very unhappy.
