Toyota Tacoma Squeaky Drivetrain - Bad U-Joint

Update - It was the U-Joint.
My truck started squeaking when accelerating and I can't seem to find any answers so hopefully this video gives me some direction as to what I need to have fixed. Truck is a 2007 Toyota Tacoma V6 Prerunner with 135k miles on it.
Squeaking only happens when accelerating too, so I'm fairly certain it's not the belts or pulleys.

Oh my dog, this is the answer. My 99 Toyota PreRunner has been squeaking for a month.. I've had it in the shop for checking the serp belt, the brakes, everything and everything looks 'fine'. I can't get the the racket to repeat wehn my mechanic drives it. Arrg!. Man...I thought I was going nuts, I was the only one hearing it. THANK YOU.

Just had mine fixed. Carrier bearing and totally dry U-joints, like no grease at all. So much for the dealer's multi point inspection. Good as new.

@@trentkilly1838 I replaced the carrier bearing and U-joints. Someone before me put on a crappy aftermarket drive shaft. So, I'm planning on replacing it soon with a proper Toyota driveshaft which will make replacing the carrier bearing. If you have the OEM driveshaft, it's a much easier job.

My 2007 started this a few months back but only heard it in reverse. At first I thought it was my emergency brake not completely releasing so I stopped using it for a while and the noise stopped, only to return a couple weeks later. A friend of mine laid on the ground, I reversed past him and he verified that the noise was definitely the carrier bearing. Replacing it this weekend. Also to note, I noticed that there's super bad vibration at take off and highway speed, so much that my ass goes numb on long trips. 🤣 I'm assuming this will help the vibration as well. Thanks for the helpful video by the way.

@lauracooskey9481

This sounds just like my '93 Toyota truck, but in reading the comments i am having my doubts. (I'm afraid to take it in to have it looked at... drive train issues could get mighty expensive if i can't at least talk the talk of knowing something about it, so i'm trying to figure it out.) I describe mine as the sound of an old-fashioned hamster wheel... metallic, but more squeaky and high than clunky or dangerous-sounding. The hamsters run slower and slower as i slow down. But here's what's weird: the sound stops either when i accelerate or when i push in (disengage) the clutch-- two things that seem opposite-- one meaning "under load" and the other with no load at all. It only happens when i'm coasting along or decelerating, but never with the clutch pushed in. Any ideas, anyone?

Did you ever figure it out? I have a soft squeal in my 11 Tacoma that goes away when pressing the clutch, looking for easy answers before I start taking things apart!
@lauracooskey9481
@lauracooskey9481 9 месяцев назад
@@Backwater-wanderer Oddly enough, my Toyota is with my mechanic again, now, a year later. I love the truck but it has enough issues that i can't even remember what happened then, and i keep all the receipts and work history in it. When i get it back, i'll check it out and let you know!
@lauracooskey9481
@lauracooskey9481 8 месяцев назад
@@Backwater-wanderer The "soft squeal" in my case was a problem with the Center Support Bearing and the two front U-joints. That was the diagnosis from the first place, my former mechanic now, and for $690 they did the work. However, i still had the noise PLUS boaty, drifty steering. They said there was really nothing wrong with it, so i took it to Les Schwab. They took off the right ball joint and said it was so corroded it fell apart as they removed it! So several hundred dollars later, i had new ball joint and upper control arm, plus an alignment done. All seems to be well now. One more note would be, though, that many many sounds disappear when the clutch is pushed in. There's just a whole lot less going on, and everything glides along more smoothly, when it's not engaged. For instance, i just this past month had a bad vibration that went away when i depressed the clutch. It turned out to be the alternator mounts were rusty and loose. Replaced (the whole alternator, bummer) and no more rattle. But more evidence that the disappearance of a noise by pushing in clutch doesn't mean it has anything to do with clutch, just with smoothness of ride and lack of stress on all systems. Good luck with your Tacoma!

FYI.. was watching another YT on this, and found out that Toyota extended warranty for 2005-2011 Tacomas with 'propeller shaft' issues. Mine has a vibration and chirping sound. It might be the driveshaft/u-joints, or might not - but since this extended warranty end in April 2019, I called local Toyota dealer 2 hours ago, and will be bringing it in next Monday. Here's the Toyota web url : www.toyoheadquarters.com/threads/2005-2011-toyota-tacoma-propeller-shaft-universal-joints-warranty-extension-zh2.1096/ Also.. my 2007 has close to 137K miles.

Are you 100% sure it was a u joint? I have a 2013 taco and I have some vibration at take off and when I hit about 45+ for a few minutes but seems to go away. So I decided to replace carrier barring and the u joints, but ran out of time and only got to replace the carrier barring and the u joint closest to the carrier barring and that’s when this noise started. We called a mechanic friend and he said it sounds like a u joint needs lube, so we fought but finally got all the joints full of grease. But the noise was just as bad if not worse. So I called another mechanic friend and he said it sounds like we put the carrier barring on backwards (but there are no markings of front or back),or something isn’t right like rubber is rubbing. Well after a 20 minute drive home it went away. The vibration is still there. I only have 85k miles on the truck and I don’t think it’s one of the other 2 u joints but I could be wrong. If the noise comes back and or the vibration goes away after the other unlikes get replaced I’ll update this comment. But I’m almost positive it was the carrier barring not seated properly or over torqued. We used an impact to get it snug and then a torque wrench at spec. So idk...
