I would have to say Rod is The GOAT but Johnny Olson was great too and I like Gene Wood doing it here. All of them are great compared to that no personality pansy ass doing it now though. The show with Drew Carey and that wimpy sounding announcer are just horrible compared to the glory days of Johnny, Rod and the STAR of the Price is Right, Bob Barkerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!
Never doubting Gene Wood's announcing capabilities. He is a very splendid announcer. Sadly, he doesn't have the energy in his voice for something like Price Is Right.
Honestly, I liked Gene's announcing on TPIR. Even though I wasn't too old then, around 3, hearing his voice brings back memories. I vaguely remember him before Rod Roddy, and unfortunately I don't remember the big Johnny Olson at all. But if they'dve given him the chance I think he'd have done very well.
I've been watching different episodes of TPIR between Johnny Olson's death and Rod Roddy's debut, out of the replacement announcers, Rod Roddy and Gene Wood were the best of the 4 that auditioned.
Awwww! This is right around the time I began watching TPIR with my dad! As I said in another TPIR opening video, it was my dad's favorite program, and whenever he was off from work and I was off from school we'd watch this together. Now all I need is a bowl of Cheerios with a spoonful of sugar sprinkled on top and a banana and I'm instantly transported back to early childhood. :)
Bob recently recited that refrigerator remark on "The Price is RAW." As for Gene, I remember his run as interim announcer, he had the voice for the show, and he had pretty good chemistry with both Tom Kennedy and Bob. But Rod was great.
The most amazing thing is that besides Barker's hair (and the use of Gene Wood), TPIR has not changed for so many years (until Drew Carey replaced him).
"The Price is Right" had some of the best announcers ever over the 53 years since it debuted on NBC in 1956. In addition to the late Johnny Olsen and Rod Roddy as the first two regular announcers on the current series, two of the orgiinal announcers are still at work today: Don Pardo (NBC) and Johnny Gilbert (ABC). Sadly, classy regular substitute announcer and substitute host (for Bill Cullen's vacations; the show was braodcast live) Jack Clark is also no longer with us.
@@daffyduckfan4478 I grew up with Rod Roddy doing TPIR and I can definitely say every announcer has a style all their own. Watch a Johnny Olson announced version and a Rod Roddy announced version back to back.
@@dave11686 i’m very aware of both of their time on the prices right and I can assure you that nothing is different. They both brought the same level of excitement except Rod was a fruit and grossly obese.
Ahhh, the days when Price looked like Price, sounded like Price, AND embraced new themes, as well as music. The time capsule, after Fremantle's trainwrecking the show, ruined it.
@ericandy88 I guess Gene Wood filled in for the late Johnny O. after Family Feud w/Richard Dawson left abc, plus, Gene Wood was not only interim announcer for the CBS Version of TPIR, but also, the syndicated version with Tom Kennedy
I think one of the reasons Gene wasn't chosen to replace Johnny as announcer is because he wasn't as enthusiastic as Johnny and I'm sure they had to find someone who would be enthusiastic just like Johnny so that's probably why they chose Rod.
I really think they went with Rod because of his enthusiasm and he was a great choice, especially since PYL was about done when Rod took over TPIR. Gene was a solid announcer, but think of all the other shows he was used in, Card Sharks, FF(first thre versions), Super Password. After Johnny died, Gene teally became the busiest game show announcer, like Johnny had been.
Well, Rod Roddy sounded so much like Johnny Olson too! Plus, Johnny Olson had mentored Rod Roddy and taught him how to be a great announcer. Rod even credited his TV success to Johnny Olson.
@ericandy88 Yeah, I would have loved Gene to take over for John but I do agree that Rod was a great successor. Everyone has to succeed someone but they will never replace them. At least for a time, we got to hear the other popular Goodson-Todman announcer on The Price Is Right.
@gcd134 I think Fields developed such a friendship with Drew Carey in three seasons that Carey took a shot at Executive Producer Mike Richards after Fields was fired by having him do Improv-a-Ganza. A contestant interviewed Fields, and noted how the two Clevelanders connected too well.
The video wall will likely be portable and be able to be moved inside the doors -- trips and potentially the new game are the use. The turntable walls are changing to dark blue instead of purple. The primetime walls are being used since the primetime set is HDTV-ready, and the daytime set was not.
Gene has appeared on the shows he announced for years, as he was featured prominently on "Family Feud" with Richard Dawson and "Super Password" with Bert Convy. He was also a guest panelist on "Match Game" in 1974.
He was also featured on Child's Play with the late Bill Cullen and Card Sharks with the late Jim Perry and plus, he was even a panelist on Match Game with the late Gene Rayburn and host of Beat the Clock as well
Gene Wood, while a great game show announcer and had history with Goodson-Todman game shows, was not suited for a high energy show like TPIR. He's too serious.
I attended a recording of Family Feud once. Gene Wood was responsible for warming up the audience, and he was a really funny guy. You should look up some clips of him. He's not serious at all.
@@joshjarnagin3161 You should see some of his clips on Family Feud with Richard Dawson. I only associate a comedian with his voice after seeing his antics.
Chris S. Do you have this entire episode that you could upload? I have been wanting to get an entire episode with interim announcer Gene Wood announcing. I have the one where he was featured as Santa Claus in the "Christmas Wishes" showcase, but would like a clean, clear episode with him announcing.
Gene Wood does a fine job here, but you really need a tenor voice like Olsen or Roddy to cut through all the noise in the intro. Plus, I miss Olsen's eccentric pronunciation of the title. "The prizee's righ!" Sounded like an old prospector.
With Gene Wood announcing on TPIR, I feel like I am watching a another game show. Still, I agree with catholicpriest1, Gene Wood stands along with other great announcers of the past such as Johnny Olsen, Rod Roddy and many others.
@cartoongameshowfan76 You know, I was born in 1983, and I never heard Johnny Olson announce an episode of TPIR until I saw the movie "Flight of the Navigator".
I think Gene did eventually, not sure about others. I wonder if it wasn't in the script originally and Johnny added that (not unlike him omitting which when throwing to break after game 4 (aka saying "Coming up on the 2nd half of the Price is Right" vs "Which are Coming Up.."), with it sticking after that.
I mis-worded my comment. The pitch in his voice sounded different on CBS than it did on NBC and ABC. If you compare his pitch here to, say, Password Plus, Dawson Feud, or some other non-CBS GT show, you'd hear a tiny difference.
Gene did a great job, but it honestly sounds like you are watching a whole different show when he announced it. Rod Roddy had almost the same kind of timbre as Johnny did, which made him a logical successor (I hesitate to say "replacement" since nobody could really replace Johnny). But it sure was great that Gene & others substituted until they could find a permanent announcer. I would bet since they were doing it for one of their own, they took no money for the job.
We know Rod Roddy replaced Johnny Olsen. An interesting choice that was in CBSs employment could have been the announcer: Johnny Gilbert. He was in Studio 31 where the $25,000 and $100,000 Pyramid was shot. If remember correctly he did announce on TPIR during Bill Cullen's era
I wish that Gene Wood could have been the permanent game show announcer on The Price is Right, after Johnny Olsen. He was the greatest game show announcer of many game shows, including Family Feud and Card Sharks.
Gene wasn't really an annoying announcer, but his voice annoyed the entire audience, plus, he didn't get along with Barker, hence, he was dumped from a possible chance of being Johnny's successor, of all the G-T shows that he had done. They actually chose Rod Roddy, because he was a former announcer on "Press Your Luck," and his voice was best enough for TPIR. He announced until his death in 2003.
Agree, he's the voice of Richard Dawson's family feud. Also remember them playing the family feud theme song, while showing off a new car. Didn't do often.
Was very surreal hearing his voice on this show after Johnny had died. But I thought it was only fitting he was the first to call it afterwards. Considering he'd been working for Goodson for over 10 years.
@johnissoevil Bob used to say that on like every tv show interview with an audience....and he alwwwwways would say the same thing on each show or speech he gave LOL you could almost memorize it...HAHAHA
