Is tracing an image for a painting bad? Are you cheating because you trace to improve your art, and do you pretend you don't trace? Is it really OK? Is there an Art Nazi looking over your shoulder? Stop listening to that Art Nazi. In this video I lay it out plain and clear. Yes - you MAY trace at will if you so desire, and you also may feel good about who you are as an artist. Art Nazis go get a life!

Hi Sandra J, I’m off my beatin path, I stumbled by investigating how to draw a Bubble, no My Bubble! because I meant water drop as well. 🤪 😃You seriously you made me laugh my a** off. With your entertaining documentary! Give em hell woman! Loved that! I need to introduce you to a few kind women on YT, who need to hear that! “Do what you need or like so long as that allows you to create!! ( they’re just jealous anyway) Thanks for the lesson & you were spot on!! You answered a Q I’ve had for decades! Your explanations answered the objectives and the Why’s. That helps me learn!! There’s much I’d like to share w you, if you have time I’d enjoy a PM from you, Thanks Sandra, I really needed it! 🤪 Monica

Some people can paint a lot better than draw. If I had to learn to draw the level I need to reach the level I need before I start painting, I would never get to paint.

Honestly, I learned to draw by tracing. But still, I prefer painting over drawing.

Oh.. I so, so, so agree! "Art Nazi" good description and I'll add "anal retentive" to that. I started drawing as a kid because that's all I had... a pencil and paper. I graduated to charcoal etc as an adult. Not bragging... just a fact... I was and still am good at it. BUT, after some 30 years of drawing, do I now use that wonderful invention that is finally inexpensive.... a light box? you bet I do. For me, painting is fun and drawing still feels like work... umm.. the reason they make erasers... not to mention booooring! Shades of gray!.. never got into drawing in colors. All those sketching tools, stumps, erasers, etc are, thankfully, stowed in a closet and not even in my art cabinet... I'm happy! ;-) Edit: but I still use my microns and dip pens but with watercolor... love, love, love color! Thanks for the topic... yes, inflammatory no doubt but still relevant as long as the Nazis persist. Artists... just express yourself!

If Andy Warhol can become famous with a Cambell's Soup picture. . . Then we are all artist.

he didn't become famous with that soup's picture. rather, people liked to reference his art to what he did as a industrial designer. I know, this now sounds a bit pedantic and maybe nazi-like as well ;-D, but I really have a hard time, to leace comments like this without trying to set them right. maybe I do need therapy - I'll consider it ;-D
