Sorry to hear this. Don't know where you're at in life, but I remember a few times this happened to me and how sour the anguish felt. Seems like the sting is too slow to dissipate. Obey your instinct to distract yourself with some fun moments.
I don't know if you tried them or not but Trader Joe's came out with canned lightly smoked mussels. I bought about two dozen of them because they are incredible. You can eat them out of the can with crackers, you can put them over rice, or you can make dips or appetizers with them. They're quite fabulous and gourmet for the price.
@@mattycruz They also have a smoked trout that is awesome. I made it into a dip. I used cream cheese, a little bit of sour cream and mayonnaise and mixed it together with green onions and grated horseradish, Worcestershire sauce and finally the smoked trout. You can also add some hot sauce to it if you want. It's great on crackers or toast.
This channel is a damn treasure. I never thought I'd be so integrally aligned with my secret love of canned fishes being where I live (hint hint, it's a natural desert) with a youtube channel that delves into the nature of it all. The smoked herring from trader joes had always been a fantastic snack. Thank you for being both quality and unique at the same time.
Somebody showed me a few of those videos years ago and it kinda stuck with me. I'll say "would you look at that" naturally, and then I'll mock myself doing the Ed Bassmaster thing. I love it when people notice this stuff. It's our culture!
My guy. I’m on the tail end of my 5 state vacation that has gone on for a month. It still likely never happen again. But it was a trip. I been waiting daily for only one thing and that’s a vid from you. You kick all kinds of ass. Thanks . Appreciate it . Again you’re my number one RU-vid Chanel
@@CannedFishFiles bro I felt the same way. I started paying attention and very few people were using their names and I was thinking same as you . It’s a little too late now to worry about it though.
this is my favorite so far. I’ve watched this a few times and showed it to my husband. “‘Hey buddy. I am smoked trout. Take me.’ It didn’t reach and try to do something to me.”
I just checked my pantry and I have a couple of cans of Trader Joe's Smoked Herring in Canola Oil (and Juices). I'm definitely going to open one up for lunch tomorrow. I agree that the tinned fish selection at Trader Joe's is pretty uninspired. Most seem more like staples to use in recipes rather than stand-alone interesting canned fish.
@@CannedFishFiles I did try it today. It was quite good. Very smoky and firm. Really nice texture - almost "meaty?" Definitely worth checking out for other tinned fish fans, especially if you like smoky, firm fish with the skin on it. You get a lot of fish in the tin. I'll definitely get more next time I'm at Trader Joe's.
It's honestly kind of impressive, there are so many comments from grateful viewers who tried sardines for the first time (or again) after watching his videos. It happened to me as well! It's infectious! In a good way. The sardines are only doing like, 30% of the work.
I just tried the Trader Joe's smoked herring. The fish was great! The fish was firm, smokey, and super delicious! By far my favorite kippers. I'm glad I saw this video, thanks for the review.
Matthew! Thank you for making these videos. There’s a neat little shop in my neighborhood in Chicago that carries all of the Matiz varieties. Hooked on the sardines with hot peppers right now. Cheers
almost all the way through the canned fish files and just realized i haven’t commented once. your videos are the best man! i binge these like sopranos on a weekend😂
Lionel, I bought my first tin of Nuri’s at World Market a few months ago. They are definitely worth $4.99. Nuri’s are the best deenz I’ve tasted so far. My everyday deenz are Polar Brislings, Bela’s, and King Oscar.
@@bradleyr34 I just bought some from World Market and had the Spicy Tomato tonight - wow. I can definitely see the difference in taste for sure. The sauce was very good and the sardines as well i thought. Yea, they are much more expensive but definitely better. The real question is is $4.99 or higher worth it and better than $2 to $3?
Trader Joe's should really start paying this guy. I've always been hesitant to try the canned herring. After watching this I can't wait to go out and buy a few cans.
They discontinued the herring sadly, but someone on Reddit said: RügenFisch: Smoked Herring Fillets in canola oil and own juice from World Market was comprable.
Go ask Alice lol. Rankin Deenz is difficult. Most tinned fish either try’s to hard or doesn’t try hard enough, I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the smoked trout having that essential centeredness that beckons with a subtle but firm identity. I think a good quality tinned fish experience should begin by causing the person to wonder whether they are worthy of such delight and then slowly elevating the person as they proceed to consume the fish to the point where they feel that they are worthy and good. Btw I loved the music, very Prelude to the Afternoon of a Kipper.
Love that napkin shoutout! My girls always talk about this. Boy do I agree about the sardines in water. Nothing special. It’s like fish as an ingredient, not something ready to eat.
Jaedon, great description of lower tier fish. They need other ingredients. Who wants that? I like deenz I can eat with toast, crackers, or straight out of the tin.
To anyone that wants to add some moisture and seasoning to sardines I can highly recommend Hank Sauce, Herb Infused. Very mild cayenne heat and flavor with garlic and basil you can actually taste. Add some French’s dried fried onions and you’ve got good eats. Also great on hamburgers in place of ketchup.
Hair is looking good! I also eat dines all the time and also haven’t had a haircut in months but my hair is just thick and wild. I’m thinking about just cutting it all off! I guess at 42 I should be grateful.
Thanks Marc. I used to take my hair for granted. But yeah, gettin' near 40, I look around at my peers, and I realize that all that hair won't be around forever. Let's enjoy it while it lasts!
This is hilarious & informative & well-paced. My opinion on the Trader Joe's Wild Caught Unsalted Sardines in Spring Water is a bit less generous than yours but I feel like it's in the same ballpark. You're doin the Lord's work out here, though, I must say. ---- Edit: saw you gave the Spring Water Sardines an E. Respect.
Gotta scratch my head about what that 'juice' is. I looked up the ingredients: herring, canola oil, salt, smoke. Nope, that explains nothing. Thanks for this new cff ep.
Polar makes a very similar smoked boneless herring in canola oil and natural fish juices. And yes, they are skin on. I usually eat them on a plate with Japanese sushi rice and assorted pickled peppers and vegetables. One of my all time favorites meals.
I may have to pick up some of the mackerel one of these days. I have been on a journey of discovering progressively better canned fish, and while some nice brislings are always good, I have determined that I love mackerel far more. I'd be interested to see how they measure up to King Oscar's mackerel.
Great channel. I watch all the time. I really like the king oscar sardines in olive oil and olives. I think there called Mediterranean spices. And I eat the kipper smoked herring fillets polar brand from Germany.
Usually have some dines to eat while I watch your videos but started watching at 11am and it just felt a bit early for canned fish. As soon as I saw that whole herring I had to go to the cupboard and grab some fish and a pair of chopsticks. Also your backing music is always weirdly catchy. Edit: for reference, the fish I got was herring in mustard sauce also called senapsill, keep an eye out for it as it's pretty tasty and a nice change from your standard fish in oil.
While researching about Portugal I came to find a video about Nuri; then I started getting sardine reviews in my feed. I still can't believe there are sardine connoiseurs, people who actually enjoy sardines. I've always disliked then and thought of them as emergency food or cat food.
Thanks Matthew, I’ve enjoyed this review mini series. The Dorade really caught my attention - a very interesting product, one I have not seen anywhere around here. Unfortunately Trader Joe’s is totally a US thing, there is no way I can try any of those here. Possibly some time in the future, we might do a little bit of an exchange or something. 🙂
No Fish in Water for me anymore. I had 3 cans of them given to me. It was like eating three slices of White Bread with nothing on it. I had to overly douse them with Yellow Bird Pepper Sauce or Melinda's Ghost Pepper.
If you liked these smoked herring, you should try brunswick seafood snacks! They have a few different varieties of herring, my favorite is golden smoked. You should do a video reviewing all of the most popular flavors!!
truck driver from Canada still watching your content just finish 5 episodes keep it up fantastic. Used to deliver in Brooklyn At Linden ave and fountain ave at least twice a week From canada. That's quite the neighborhood after the sun goes down!!! Got my local grocer in the process of getting me some nuri Spiced.
Matthew, after watching this video I went to my local trader joes today with the intent to pick up the smoked herring fillets with skin. They have been discontinued. I was very sad! Picked up the smoked trout instead which was nice but I want that skin, man!
Thanks for your input. I've still only had one can of the TJ's. So if I hear this from a couple more people, I may give the TJs a shot at a head-to-head vs Belas.
Went to Trader Joe’s the other day and it was depressing. Everything I bought seemed like low quality food in nice packaging. Weird shopping experience being surrounded by five employees with giant tablets watching my every move lol 😂
rapeseed would be more apt in terms of northern european flavor. i think canola is technically the same species, but it’s like dog breeds with food plants.
TJs used to have smoked salmon in a can. I wondered why it was so fishy, unlike the cans of smoked salmon I got from Alaska. The reason - TJ’s used Chum salmon rather than King. Sockeye or Coho salmon. Chum salmon is the cheapest type of salmon in Alaska. Hence, it’s used as dog and cat food. A TJ employee admitted that my suspicion was a fact. A few months later, it was off the shelf. Now you know how TJ’s makes a profit. lol
I sit here, eating a can of dines in hot sauce, watching a man review canned fish. About to pound a beer and go pick up some more cans cuz I’m out. Life is good
Your musical scoring is exquisite! It would be really swell if you started including a list of the music used…..or AT LEAST tell me what song is playing at 10:46 . Thanks!
dang, what happened to their smoked canned salmon? I was hoping to hear your thoughts. I am pretty novice with canned fish, but interested to see where my opinion lands on your spectrum.
Well gosh, now I'm even more annoyed Trader Joe's discontinued the herring! I do enjoy their salmon, and I haven't tried their mussels so no idea if that's any good.
