EP 117: Traders’ opportunity-when things that “should” happen, don’t happen w/ Larry Alintoff
Larry Alintoff was a prop trader for Paul Tudor Jones, before running the largest group of traders on the AMEX (at the time). When he later went over to the NYBOT, Larry became the largest trader in the Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice pit, and now days, he’s CIO of The Toro Fund.
During this episode, we cover; the thing which helped Larry to become consistent, why there’s great opportunity in knowing when things that “should” happen, don’t happen, and how he’s been able to successfully apply a similar trading style from the floor to the screens. Plus, how a market obsession has carried him this far…

Amazing Perspectives! I was surprised to hear what he said about spotting divergence back in the late 80s when he paper traded. I use divergence today even.

Trading electronically these days is far easier than trading without live charts and calling your broker every time. I am amazed at the enormously successful traders of the 80s. How did they do it?

I would disagree. Why do you think so many analogue traders failed to transition to electronic trading. I know many who are now taxi drivers or working part time in retail. There is no such thing as easier or harder in any industry. It all depends on the distribution of a particular edge. For example, if you were a floor trader back in the days, huge sums can be made if you just knew a few of the big players and ride on their trades. You could trade both volume (for scalps) or ride the trends which were more extended. Contrast to today, many HFT firms are still making a killing akin to the floor traders back in the days if not more. So most of it boils down to being in the right place at the right time as edges change and evolve. Silicone valley IPO and tech floats might be making killing today but in a few years it might be different. It never gets easier or harder, just how one adapts and exploits the ever changing climate.

You may be right. Transitioning to electronic trading may have been like learning to speak Chinese. I saw a documentary featuring a Chicago pit trader who sucked at electronic trading and missed the human touch of the trading floor. But new traders who have grown up with computerized trading platforms can't imagine trading the old way.

Hey Aaron, you should try audiobooks from Audible or Kindle books with a voice reader, I find that to be much faster

How have you not read Reminiscences?!? It's the bible man! I have the Cover of the original Saturday Evening post Magazine Framed on the wall in my office. It's nicer to look at and more cost effective than buying the George H. Doran 1st edition for $8-$10k. The audio book is even available on RU-vid. Just one question, how do you know how to trade if you never read it? That's like playing jazz and not knowing what a major scale is.
