Tradescantia is one of my very favorites! So easy, so pleasing! I love that you have so many kinds. I need to up my collection.

I got the purple heart 💜 today! This makes me so happy that it will come back next year I am planning to put some in the front yard and some in pots

I just got a bunch of zebrina cuttings! I’m super excited. They are beautiful.

I love growing Tradescantia! Their so easy and fun to grow. About 1 year ago I started really getting into the plant genius and have now collected 5 varieties. I found the key to growing happy Tradescantia is to give them bright, indirect light. Also, I recommend that you let them dry out between waterings. However, don't let them get too dry otherwise their leaves will get crispy. Also, I think the variegated tradescantia that you suspect to be a tri-color is actually just a variegated tradescantia. The variegation on variegated tradescantias leaves is very unstable which causes it to sometimes mutate. I have a variegated tradescantia that has some bi-colored foliage and some pure albino foliage. I think it would still be worth a shot to see if you can get the stem to produce more tri-colored foliage. In addition, I too, find it fun to put tradescantia in higher light. I have a tradescantia sillamontana in my south-facing window and it receives 8-9 hours of full sun. I've found that backing off on the watering and putting it in a well-draining mix has caused it to turn purple with distress and form fuzzier leaves.

I bought a tradescantia nanouk last spring - it was love at first sight because of these vibrant colours. I have it outside in the summer (in morning sun, and during midday hours in filtered sunlight). During this time it grows much faster and gets even brighter colours. I love to propagate it because I have many friends who are crazy for plants just like me.

A friend of mine gave me a small cutting and I planted it outdoors almost two years ago. Since then I have replanted cuttings everywhere and have them in pots all around my yard. I have even given some to friends. Love that plant!!! Thanks for talking about them!!!

I believe that I have the solid purple my daughter was walking home and brought a piece she picked up from a neighbor cutting theirs lol! They grow outside and grow so crazy fast.

I think tradescantias are my favourites. They are so easy to grow and propagate! I'm in love with my fluminensis tricolor right now. I bought 5 stems on internet, simply put them in the soil and it just grows in front of my eyes! 😍😍I have also a zebrina that I already propagated into 4 different pots. And my cousin is growing for me green fluminensis and that all purple one with longer leaves. Can't wait to get my hands on them 🤣🤣 thank you for an interesting video

Love these guys - I've got 4 different types; Zebrina, Purple Heart, Nanouk, and whatever the green and white striped one is (?). As you said, all are super easy to propagate, very fast growers, and they can be brittle. Mine are primarily indoor, and the Purple Heart blooms almost constantly. They're a great plant for people just getting into the house plant hobby.

I used to have a variegated Tradescantia plant {Wondering Jew} About 40 years ago and since then I tried about 2 times and they die. This past week my sister and I wanted to get a and just drive. During that time we found a ROSE's store with lots of plants. My sister saw the purple wondering Jew AND THEN I SAW A VARIEGATED PLANT she it was a wondering Jew, I said I'd never seen one like that before so we found a good one and I saw a green SPIDER PLANT.I had been wanting one of those fore a long time. I now have one of each in my apt. They are getting the morning through afternoon sun BUT they are on a low shelf. These plants I bought were outside but are now indoors. The variegated Tradescantia plant had some dead leaves and I got rid of those and they DO break off so easy and I put them on a small. glass of water. When I say variegated it has green leaves with strikes and some were solid white or solid green. Is that normal? where should I put these plants? I also have snake plant. In the year of 2000 or 2001 I had a landlady give me the Mother-Law plant. Out of that plant I gave away 4 or 5 plants from the original. I have another plant I've had it before but for the life of me I can't remember the name. BUT back to the ones above I could use some advise. I don't want to lose them, Sorry for being so long winded. Thank you

I started putting my wandering Jew outside in pots and they grew well. I live in zone 9. I propagated them and put them in coco lined pots hanging from tree stems. No water propagation necessary.

I believe I have a Purple Queen. It's very leggy and lost a lot of purple cuz of winter. Waiting for the spring/summer sun!

I love tradescantia. I got a tradescantia zebrina, tradescantia pallida, tradescantia pallida pale pluma and some other varieties I can't remember. Very underrated plant.

I have a couple of Tradescantia spathacea plants, commonly called as oyester plant or cradle lily both in low light and also in bright indirect light. Both locations seem to be ideal for them, I have a few cuttings of them immersed in water as well, and they are absolutely stunning. I also have other varieties of Tradescantia like the Tradescantia pallida or the purple heart plant, it does well in bright indirect light. Some of my Tradescantia plants like the Tradescanta zebrina and the Tradescantia fluminensis variegata are yet to be planted, they're still rooting in water.

Love the purple. I don't have one of these...yet!

I have zubrina outside in northern michigan. It's been frosting over for 2 weeks now and snowing for 4 days now it's still alive... for real. I have a dense covering of leaves and snow on the soil and I have the tinsiest spark of hope that it will come back next year. I pruned it but still left a lot there so hopefully it will go dormant with less leaves, instead of thinking to keep growing. If I can force this plant to significantly slow or even go dormant, there's a slim chance it might survive...

Hello Rosetta, I have the Rare Tradescantia plant. I grow my plant indoors

I bought a Tradescantia Andersonian on a whim when in the garden store in May. It was about a foot tall. I planted it in a 12" pot and put a 2' high piece of fencing around it. I live in the high desert of Oregon and our winters are very cold, think Zone 2, and summers in 90's with some over 100 degree days not uncommon. I planted it in direct sun on the patio outside my greenhouse. Nights are beginning to dip into the 30's and it still seems healthy. It completely filled the pot, straight up, and is about 3' tall with lovely pale lavender/white petals which bloom during the day and close up at night. It's a fascinating plant but I know I will need to bring it in soon as it's too cold for it to live this winter. I thought about trying to plant it in the ground near the South side of the house and mulch it in for the winter to see if it would come back in the Spring. I'm going to take some cuttings and start them for inside. I expected to see it drop through the fencing and tend toward a hanging type of plant. Not so. Have you had any experience with them growing straight up as opposed to trailing? Laurie, La Pine, OR

So jealous! I got cuttings for a t. pallida from a friend that I'm growing indoors. It lost its hue and is struggling through minimal sun. A grow light is on the way. It still has crunchy ends and the leaves are droopy. 😩

Hello from the Pacific Northwest. I grow Zebrina, Nonouk, and Bridal Veil indoors. Am trying to get the watering down on the bridal veil. 🙂 You may want to mention that these plants are considered very invasive in many areas. If you grow outdoors, plant in containers and be careful. Oh, never mind....you did just say just that. Sorry.....We really need to protect our natives. Have a great week.

Great video, Rosetta! My question is: I have a new Zebrina that has 3 arms about 8” long and a couple of new offshoots starting. On the longer arms, each set of leaves is about 4” apart. I realize if I pinch the ends off it will get bushier, but will it continue to trail? I’d like it to be both bushy and long. Am I asking for too much?? 😄

If the leaves dry and fall can they grow again? Or that branch is going to be "bald" forever? Thanks for the awesome video!

Purple Hearts are the dark purple ones I think you were referring to.

HELLO, I APPRECIATE YOUR CHANNEL. I HAVE THE NANOUK AS A BABY AND THE ONE CALLED WJ, FULL GROWN. THEY ARE INSIDE PLANTS. I LEAVE THEWJ OUT UNTIL WINTER SETS IN. I AM IN MARYLAND AND I DONT KNOW WHAT ZONE I AM IN.

If you have five different types of these plants, can you stick them all in the same pot and they would be fine and also I live in New Hampshire where the weather in the winter time gets really cold so they have to come inside. Do they do well under full spectrum, LED lightbulbs.

Love your video! Thank you for making a point to not refer to the plant by its potentially offensive name. I am quite surprised that most gardening tutorial channels and care guides still use that and was looking for a tutorial that would acknowledge that it may not be appropriate to use that term. Thank you. I shared your content with some friends for this very reason as I refuse to use that terminology and just call them zebrinas (that's the variety I have). :)

Hey I would like to send you a cutting of my Tradiscanta .didn't check the date of the video sorry. Hope its still cool, my dad grew many when I was a young boy. I learned some and mbe you might be interested in the one I have. Around 15 years ago I took my family to London zoo, they have a hot humid butterfly house. It was all over the place. Asked my 5 year old to grab just one small stem. Its done amazing. Went from dark green to way more purple, mostly underneath but retains dark green tones on top. I just wanted to know if it's 😊or not. Seems fine and as you said so adaptable. Let know if you still keep up to date and you can. I have a green/white tradescantia (Variegata?) and for some reason, it doesn't vine downwards like yours. It's been growing horizontally and not straight. It kind of resembles a letter J shape where it'll extend then curve upwards. Is there a way to encourage it to just grow into a vine straight down?

You say that they need bright light does that mean that they can be directly under a grow light?

I just got my tradescantia nanouk on 30/6 (about 3 pieces of leaves with root) but unfortunately, 2 of it died with rot root. Now left 1. Wish me luck dear :'(

hey I'm having trouble rooting mine. Well it sprouts roots after I put it in water for a few weeks (started with one cutting that has gradually fallen apart and grown I now have 3) but when I put it into dirt, it takes off for a few weeks then everything under the soil rots off and I have to put them back in water to grow more roots. this has happened 3 times in different pots.

I have a big planter of tradescantia zebrina and they where thriving till a fee months ago. Now they are yellow and dying! I like in the tropics and i have the outside in direct sun (which they didn't mind for 5 month) but now im so confused!

I have T. Sillamontana and T. Blossfeldiana. They do very well for me, but I cannot, cannot grow a zebrina or any other of the dark purple. I'm not a novice. I've been trying for decades. My fuzzy friend and my lilac beauty are quite happy, but give me a zebrina and it will be dead within a week. It's very frustrating to constantly hear how easy they are. I can't be the only person in the world who has problems with them and I wish someone would address what can and does go wrong.

Im not into labeling plants by variety. I think it creates a sense of superiority and inferiority within my garden. I like to think all the varieties matter and wont be bullied into defining them one against the other.

My mother in law has the green variety all over her yard.. like she has no grass!! It’s is her grass basically.... which is kinda cool but it’s not pretty and she sits on 7 acres and it’s all 7acres that it took over!! That’s why I’m scared to purchase one🤣🤣 what of it takes over my house lol just kidding but they are pretty! Just not as grass

This plant was given the name Wandering Jew as a reference to the fictional character known as The Wandering Jew. While not a true Biblical story, the tale of the Wandering Jew is based on the truth of Scripture. In truth and reality, the Wandering Jew is all of mankind and every human being without Yeshua HaMashiach as their Lord and Savior. If that is offensive to you, sobeit.
