Train Set vs. Swimming Pool 

DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! Some commenters have expressed concerns about this video, and the issue of using electricity with water. There was NO DANGER involved with my personal setup, but to be absolutely safe, please don't try this yourself. At the very least, this WILL destroy your model trains, despite how well the Heljan Tango worked.

Lucky you still have ad's running on this. I've done videos of toys in pools and they get flagged / demonetized or worse still sent to RU-vid KIDS hell which is akin to being removed from the site.

I cannot believe it worked. It would be neat if you had an underwater camera view there (giving you an excuse to do it again). I think the lock will work again.

Well done Sam, I wanted to try this out myself, but you have saved me finding out if a model train would run under water. If the water was dirty I think you would lose a lot of voltage between the rails.

Hey, Sam! I enjoy watching your videos from the “other side of the water!” lol Obviously, a swimming pool is a bit much, but would you think about having a train layout in the garden? Could your HO/OO track withstand the weather?

Lol I find it a good idea to use your Heljan Tango for this experiment of it running in the pool of water since it is overall one of your least favorite locomotives of all time. Looks like the Heljan Tango is having his own time underwater swimming.

I remember seeing a video years and years ago of a train running underwater, I always thought it was fake. Now I see it could very well be real, even if it didn't end too well for the loco

Really not sure this is a good thing to be showing the younger viewers.. they may get ideas & ruin their locos. Dropped in baths and ponds is my worry.

I’m actually quite “shocked” that the worst loco you’ve seen is functioning underwater

For brushed motors, it is actually recommended to do a run-in of the motor in water to help seat the brushes cleanly on the commutator...... In the model car hobby we run new brushed motors under water before installing them (of course we put new oil in the bushings after)

So this train set is garden capable, you could run it even while it is raining.

You’re right it’s summer, but it’s practically over. Fall season is about to start. School/college has already started for some of us, and vacation time is up, with the exception of Labor Day weekend. So, cheers, and good luck this September.

Nice experiment. I'm guessing the reason why half the track looks like that is because the engine and it's train were not completely flat so more wight was thrown to one side.

Well a very interesting experiment :-) That it would work was to exect after your test with the loco running underwater some moons ago. The train cars make nice boats or not ? :-) Intersting aspekt with the electrolysis of the rails, in a slight different configuration (connect both rails at one time), a modeller could "weather" all his tracks at one time for optics, I guess.

How is it possible that the train still moves even though there's water on the rails?

Should have used the ocean wagons - would have been more fitting! Also this a much more exciting way to teach electrolysis than GCSE chemistry!

I dunno if the engine will ever run again but hopefully those wagons are salvageable - should have used Ocean wagons for the pun potential, though. =P The poor Tango certainly put up a fight in the end! I suspect this first impressive performance from it might be its last, though. If it ever returns to the layout I suspect it'll be as a Tan*ghost*, ooOOooo~ ...if you did custom work that could actually be a fun project. Some bad rusting, growths of coral and barnacles, a plume of bubbles coming from the smokestack... ...honestly it's making me feel artistic but I'm no good with any visual mediums.

Okay, so you have done underwater railways Sam. I think you need a bigger challenge. Perhaps it is time to go into space. Forget the Heljan O4, unless you want to see it float away. I think you might need an old Hornby loco with magnadhesion to counteract the lack of gravity.

Another experiment success, I have feeling one day, you'll create a ultimate model railway layout that will go in model railway history!

I have some good news, I am still able to do the series but it will be done with Trainz Driver 2( Trainz Simulator for iOS) but most of the locomotives I want cost 0.99 to 1.99 dollars but hey at least I don’t have to pay 20-30 dollars for a coach or truck when I could get a ton of engines with rolling stocks in the game

The last part gave me an idea. What about doing tests to see what locos and rolling stock are the best to have on a coastal railway? Incase of a rouge tidal wave. You could test to see what derails and what doesn’t. how much it takes to derail them. And how far they travel when hit. And another idea is someone (maybe your self has to make the worlds first aquarium with a railway inside of it! Great video.

Okay I watched this video knowing that trains work, cuz the great model railway challenge. New to here, really cool btw, but I didn't expect fully submerged to work.

I wouldn't do this to my 0 4 0 but I would make a tunnel which is very similar to what you see in an aquarium that would look quite cool.

I've been waiting for this since I was a kid.

I can't believe it worked!, you should put it in a bubble air tube next (a clear one) so we can see the reaction to waves!

Our Dad brought us kids a canvas wading pool he also brought me a Marklin train set it never occurred to me to combine the two together- I alternately currently feel this would be an electrifying experience 😆

i think the reason there was so much writing was because it was actually one of those smaller sections, but it was just in a load of different languages
