It was a busser job at abuelos and the manager asked me why he should hire me instead of other applicants, I replied "They build dish rooms because of me. I don't really care for the take that he was a cop. I think it adds a lot of explaining that the team would have to do about the bust. It is one thing for his team to barge in on a drug dealer. But to bust an ex cop who may or may not have been publicly disgraced would require a lot of explanation on their part as to why they didn't inform anyone else. And not having any drugs as evidence leads to explaining they would have to come up with. And when Roger says pension I think he is just referring to his hidden stash with cop lingo as he has bought them all off. I also think it would make this movie more of a standard cop drama of Roger was an ex cop.

He may of gotten away with the russians, but denzel knew his time was catching up with him. He was losing respect in the community with both the cop and the crooks. The russian thing was not an accident. Alonzo was a hothead. He has probably stepped on many toes before. And I don't think he would of just gotten away with killing the older cop and taking that money, either. A guy like that has friends all over. Most corrupt cops know when to bend the rule here and there, and who's ass to kiss. But I think Alonzo was a habitual line stepper.

Denzel is such a good actor, the intentions in his eyes change in times of desperation. You could see in his eyes when he wanted that money back, it was subtle breaking and internal panic. Also, when he's in the car talking about, "I used to be like you" speech, it's an exposed layer as though Antoine Fuqua gave him context that the audience doesn't get to know about in the movie. There has to be a trigger event in Alonzo's career that made him take a drastic turn to be a real POS. He seemed passionate about killing Roger because he sold drugs, but in the scene, yes he needed money, but there's a small connection to him personally on the bad Roger has done. To my knowledge, I don't think Alonzo touched drugs the entire movie as far as dealing with it to profit from, I could be wrong. All my observations, just my opinions. I just rewatched this with my boyfriend, who is obsessed with this movie, to the point he can clap that bird scene, on beat, in the right syncopation lol. I dig it after watching it again, I really appreciate Denzel's acting, it is legendary.

roger was the cop who corrupted alonzo, the same way alonzo is testing jake. when alonzo says his little catch phrase "boom!" roger says it just like him and at the same tempo. alonzo LEARNED THAT from roger, he adapted some of roger's personality. roger made tons of money because the 'wise guys' let him do it, he was useful to the upper echelon of corruption, the same way years later alonzo is trying to get their bless, by surpassing his mentor (roger), in all ways possible, even serving as the wiseguys wicked pawn to erase roger himself from the "game" (dirty money).

One thing that I believe a lot of people miss in this film is that Alonzo believes that this day is his last one alive. His plan to save himself always involved using Jake as a patsy. Why else would he allow the training day to happen on the most important day of his life if not for using him as a pawn? The plan to kill him evolved as the day grew due to Jakes’s convictions, but he was always going to use him to save himself. The plan always involved killing and ripping off Rodger. He knew the money was there as they spoke regularly. He was not certain that the Russians would keep their side of the deal and that’s why he visited the mistress and his son. He appeared to be saying his goodbyes to them. He wasn’t thinking about tomorrow. He wasn’t looking to recruit Jake. He was studying Jake all day long to judge how to use him. In the end he couldn’t control him and therefore arranged the hit. Every move was about getting that money to pay off his blood debt to the Russians, which he would have succeeded in doing if it wasn’t for Jake’s tenacity in that alley with the junkies. It was a very good plan that came unstuck due to bad luck with his only variable - Jake’s moral compass. Had Jake not kept that wallet, Alonzo likely wins. Brilliant writing, direction, cinematography and acting.

Perhaps craziest part of this movie is that its not completely fiction. Alonzo's character is based straight on Officer Rafael Perez from the LAPD Rampart scandal of the 90s; who was also implicated as being involved in the murder of Tupac and Biggie. Note that other Death Row artists Snoop and Dre have parts in this film. Perez supposedly put a dealer in a wheelchair (ala Snoops character). Even the license plate number on Alonzo's Chevy is a shout out to Perez.

Watched it for the first time on Netflix. In my opinion, what makes Training Day so great is essentially the audience is Hoyt. This experience with Alonzo is as new to him as it is to the viewer and Hoyt (the viewer) is merely reacting to the choices and situations Denzel’s character puts in front of him.

Having just watched it for the first time, I can say that Ethan Hawk played one of my favorite cops in film. Right next to Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive and Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners. Even after all the doubt and disgust he faced in that one day, Hoyt never broke and still had belief in his job. Some may call him naive, but at the end of the day, he was let go while Denzel... Wasn't.

So glad to hear you finally get around to talking about this film again. It’s probably my favorite movie of all time just behind Jurassic Park and Shawshank Redemption. I’ve picked up on most of these intricacies, and have never understood why it gets some of the criticism, albeit very little criticism that it gets. I personally think Alonzo planned to recruit Jake but by the time they reached Roger’s crib to steal the money, he planned to pin it on him and when Jake refused to take part in it, that’s when he planned to kill him for sure. He told him he would hold his money to ease his other crew, probably because he wanted to kill Jake so he had control of the situation and not one of his crew or Dr Dre kill him randomly and cause more of a problem to clean up in the house.

I don't think this to be true. If that was the case why would they all be so concerned about his situation with the russians when they were talking at the restaurant. One of them even says "I don't know why I'm meeting ya, I don't talk to the men", and the other one said "I do not want to see you on the front page like those other assholes". I think they genuine like Alonzo and don't want to see him get killed. I think the person who called roger was someone who wanted to get some drugs from him.

A lot of these nuisances you point out are very noticable. But there was 2 things about Training Day that were cool to me. 1. Scott Glenn who played Roger, was the lead in the original Man on Fire (1987) before Denzel did the remake from 2004. 2. The alternate ending when Jake gets home, speaks with the "Wise Men" from earlier in the movie and you must watch the whole scene to the very end.

Also: Jake saving Smileys cousin was probably THE only detail Alonzo missed that went against his plan.. and even then, Lonzo probably knew of her, and that’s why he tried dismissing her so quickly “we don’t need a report” And “I been planning this all week”? Up to that point, that makes total sense, but I don’t think Jake is a marked man until AFTER Rogers death “make sure that bathtubs clean” Edit: I just got to the point in the vid where you said my point about Lonzo saying “jake is out”… Jake knows entirely too much at that point

roger was the cop who corrupted alonzo, the same way alonzo is testing jake. when alonzo says his little catch phrase "boom!" roger says it just like him and at the same tempo. alonzo LEARNED THAT from roger, he adapted some of roger's personality. roger made tons of money because the 'wise guys' let him do it, he was useful to the upper echelon of corruption, the same way years later alonzo is trying to get their bless, by surpassing his mentor (roger), in all ways possible, even serving as the wiseguys wicked pawn to erase roger himself from the "game" (dirty money).
