Trans Am returns to Brainerd International Raceway July 16-18.
Originally known as the Donnybrook Road Course, the very wide 10-turn, 3.1-mile circuit first hosted Trans Am at the height of its “golden years.” Parnelli Jones won the opener in 1969 in Bud Moore’s Mustang. Privateer Milt Minter scored a major upset in 1970, winning in a Camaro, while Roger Penske Javelins won in 1971 (Mark Donohue) and 1972 (George Follmer). After a two-year break, Trans Am returned to the rechristened Brainerd International Raceway in 1975, with Peter Gregg, Bob Tullius and Jerry Hansen among the winners over the next four years.

So many famous names in those races. I love that era. I was in high school and remember the cars and the styles well.

Thanks for the upload. I was there, more than likely turn 2, which was manned by the Nord Stern Region of the PCA, with Corner Captain Jim Hyaek (member of both SCCA and PCA). Had to be a member of SCCA to be a corner captain. Various sports car clubs manned the corners because the local SCCA club did not have enough members to man all the positions. Corner Captain had to be an SCCA member. The good old days.

Mark, so you're old SCCA guy. Cool. I volunteered for corner work Laguna Seca back in the 70s for amatuer races. It was so much fun. The pace car for this race was a 69 AMX. I had a 70 AMX and of course was a fan of the Penske Javelins. Good old days indeed..

Nice comment. You are part of a little bit of American motorsports history imo. Wasn't this the season and series where the legend of the world famous pony cars like Mustang, Camaro etc. began?

@@darkangel8922 Yes, they missed Penskes refueling rig. It was approximately 15 ft in the air and wrapped in dry ice
