I remember Hasbro receiving complaints from parents over the green-eyed kids in the early commercials. They were creepy to me as well as ridiculous. I sure miss die-cast figures. Almost as much as metal lawn darts.
They stopped it because kids were putting stuff in their eyes, trying to emulate it, lol. I was a kid when these adverts were on, albeit a very young kid, but I never tried it myself, haha. Think I had most of the transformer released till around 88. The only ones I can't remember having were the insecticons, Soundwave & Shockwave, Unicron & Tripticon. I stupidly gave them all away to my next door neighbour when I started getting into wrestling 😮 Would be worth a few pennies nowadays
Format to pretty much every Transformers commercial... 1. Cartoon segment. 2. Transformers theme. 3. Transforming. 4. (Robotic voice) "Robots in disguise!" 5. "(Decepticon) is attacking!" 6. "(Autobots) will stop them!" 7. "Each sold separately, from Hasbro."
It's so fun to see these all these years later. I was 11 when Transformers premiered on TV in 84, I was immediately a fan. I was all about Star Wars toys and Atari in the years before 84 but once these came out they were all I wanted. I would collect them and put them on shelves and never play with them. Took great care of them for my display. Christmas 84 my parents were so nice they bought me Optimus Prime, Jazz, Prowl & WheelJack. I remember going to Lionel Playworld a month or two before Christmas and I watched some parents fight over some when the stock boys brought out a new box or two from the back. I couldn't believe the behavior of some of them. I wasn't as shocked I guess because of the Cabbage Patch Dolls drama a year or two before which we all knew about back then. It wasn't until Nintendo made it to America that I found something else to be obsessed about. Lol The biggest mistake Hasbro made was killing off all the original characters in the movie just to launch a new toy line, my opinion they could've done it without the movie. I would've preferred a new TV series set in the future that came on after the original show so season 3 would've still been all the original line up. I would've been a bigger fan of the new show had I not lost all my beloved original guys. It's funny to still be upset about it all these years later but I am. I would've loved a movie in 86 that was all about Prime and Megatron that ends to lead into season 3 and then years down the road say 89 or 90 to then put out the movie we got in 86 to show the changing of the guard. I think it all would've remained popular had that happened instead of getting cancelled after season 3. Regardless Transformers are my all time favorite toy line and cartoon, well season 1 & 2, not so much 3. I was pretty much checked out by the time we made it to the headmasters.
i remember having these commericals as a bonus on a vhs of the 1986 transformers movie. used to watch it all the time at my grandma's house. good times.
After all these years I still find it funny that the character of JetFire was modeled after the Valkyrie Class Veritechs from Robotech in particular the Skull 1 Veritech piloted by legendary ace Roy Fokker and later Rick Hunter.
All these classic transformers commercials serves as a bit of a history lesson to me because I knew about most of the transformers from back in the 80s, but I didn’t know that the autobots had triple changers of their own. I knew that the Decepticons had blitz wing as one of their Triple changers and I also didn’t know that the Decepticons had other triple changers too.
The Autobot Triple-Changers came way later, and the Decepticon Triple-Changers got their own focus in a cartoon episode. Plus, Blitzwing was the only triple-changer featured in Animated, which is roughly when transformers went mainstream again.
Man I remember them commercials and still have alot of these in two large 27 gallon containers. Too much to collect as a kid spending my summer job pay checks between this GI Joe, Robotech and MASK.

Beat it Rodimus Prime, we do not need a Brazilian-tuned like Camping Car as Autobot leader! We want Optimus Prime... Or at least Powermaster God Ginrai. And possibly with SUPER MEGATRON as opponent... Not that hysterical incompetent of Galvatron :( Galvatron in commercials had such potential the animators destroyed him with his more than erratic behaviour! And that hateful voice... Commercials one was perfect... Fit for a powerful leader with a touch of insanity. "Scourge is possessed! Stop him decepticons... Even MAIM him... But wipe out the spark of STARSCREAM out of him!"
In the Deviation version... No, Prime doesn't die thanks to Kup's wisdom. Hot Rod instead dies to defeat Unicron... Unfortunately also Perceptor, Jazz and Cliffjumper appear to die along with Ultra Magnus and most of the useless Season 3 characters (Kup and Blurr survive, and so Grimlock, the Dinobots, the Witwickys... And Kranix)
Part of being an 80s kid was getting your first Transformer toy and being disappointed they didn't make those loud snapping noises when you transformed them.
Anyone think they should rerelease some of the titans return or power of the primes and combiner wars figures? Like for example Devasator,Triptacon and metroplex for example? Cause they wouldn’t look too out of place in a siege/legacy collection.
Galactic Man was actually a Radio Shack-licensed version of ToyCo Astro Magnum, and was a Pre-Transformer in 1983. The Galactic Man now has the nickname 'Shackwave'. Hasbro also licensed Astro Magnum in 1985 for Shockwave, now every G1 Shockwave toy has to have a black Astro Magnum colored recolor.
I'm so glad they stuck with the dumb "a child must say 'robots in disguise' in a robot voice" gimmick through almost the entire run of commercials. I bet the adult in the boardroom who threw that idea out to the rest of the adults felt pretty proud every time they saw a transformers commercial.

Good to see, but the image quality is terrible - virtually impossible to see some of them! I wish the high quality from Hasbro where still viewable as there is only so much you can do with a VHS (and a low quality one at that) recording
