TRANSFORMERS: THE BASICS on the COMBATICONS 

Fun fact: Final Fantasy XIV actually references the Combaticons. There’s a series of robotic boss enemies named Swindler, Brawler, Vortexer, Blaster, and Onslaughter. They’re first encountered and fought separately, then later combine to form Brute Justice. The theme that plays during the fight is among the most popular pieces of music from the game.

I swear Transformers: Animated was leading up to combiners before it got canceled. You had the stunticons, swindle, constructicons, and other notable combiner characters that never really got their time in the spotlight

Animated Swindle was one of my favorite parts of the series. He was like a cross between Lockdown and the stereotypical used car salesman. I wish the rest of the team could have gotten that sort of love.

Little known fact: the Combaticons actually appeared BEFORE their own creation. They were introduced by animation error in the episode preceding "Starscream's Brigade"...

Loved these guys in the Fall of Cybertron game (especially Vortex design). Felt unstoppable, and then you get to face off against them as Jazz. Never cared for Jazz before that, but he was an absolute beast after that. Lone smart mouth Autobot that could hold his own against a giant combiner by abusing his wits and environment.

Man, Swindle deserves his own Basics episode. He's just the best.

God, IDW did so many great things with the Transformers characters. Making Optimus more of a relatable person, making the Combaticons' desire for vengeance against Starscream understandable, etc. Hell, they made MEGATRON and SOUNDWAVE into characters who can be empathized with!

I love Swindle’s character evolution into a shifty arms dealer.

The way the Combaticons played in Fall of Cybertron was arguably the most satisfying. After playing a specific mission as each member, basically taking turns telling Starscream to shut the hell up because his plans are garbage, you finally disable the transport and the main defenses before you combine intro Bruticus to lay the final assault on the remaining autobots.

Did you notice that vortex when from a ww2 plane into a helicopter when starscream put the energon on him

Swindle is easily the best member of the team. He was the most interesting of the bunch, as we see even in the episode Bot he's all about the deal as he sells his own teammate's parts to military groups across the globe. It's no wonder Transformers animated took this character and ran with it. The combaticons had a good run, as Starscream's brigade, Bruticus' revenge and BoT give them some time in the spotlight. They even squared off against the Aerialbots in Aerial Assault. While the Stunticons will always be my favorite Decepticon combiners, the Combaticons were a very close second.

The Combaticons is my favorite combiner team, though it’s mainly because I love the military theme and “Bruticus” has got to be one of the sickest names in TF.

Revisiting this because of the Combaticons cartoon.

You know, when you mentioned they were created by Starscream when he went rogue, it made me think of the Starscream seeker clones from Transformers Animated. Which made me realize, that could've been a great opportunity to revitalize their G1 origin to a modern cartoon.

I always thought at the end of the first live action movie, with Starscream escaping Earth, him getting to Cybertron would have been a great way to bring in the Combaticons and use them as his own soldiers based off the G1 episode.

Fall of Cybertron is my favorite version of Bruticus. You forgot about the tank in the first movie that was named Brawl in the toyline but named Devastator in the movie.

Much like Perceptor, my first experience of stuff Combaticon related was in Animated via Swindle, who I thought was a pretty great villain. Wasn't until much later did I find out how Swindle was originally part of a group, and a combiner group at that. Unfortunately though because of Animated, Swindle is really the only one I remember and think of when the group comes to mind. Bruticus the combiner though was pretty great in G1. Good episode, looking forward to the next one as always. Will also still give out my request on a basics episode on Star Saber. Also would be neat to see a basics on GI Joe's involvement in the Transformers franchise, a look on the Aligned Continuity, and Cosmos.

I'm always for the OG Combaticons: Onslaught, Blast-Off, Brawl, Vortex, and Swindle as Bruticus. -But the Bruticus Maximus version from Transformers Energon is an unique concept. 5:48 Mostly in the members being Barricade, Blight, Kickback, Blackout and Stormcloud.

Swindle is my favorite Combaticon.

Here some good alternate modes for the Combaticons and what their robot modes should be based on. Onslaught: A Navy Blue and Olive Caesar 8x8 Howitzer truck with anti-aircraft turrets. His robot mode based on both his Generation 1 and Last Knight counterparts. (Should not look like Long Haul.) Blast Off: A rusted and purple accented Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-105/15 space fighter plane hybrid. His robot mode based on his IDW and Fall of Cybertron counterparts. Vortex: A grey and blue Bell AH-1Z Viper. His robot mode based on his Dark of the Moon Toy. Swindle: A tan yellow JLTV with purple accents. His robot mode based on his animated counterpart. Brawl: A camouflaged green M1A1 Abrams tank that has mine plows. His robot mode based on his live-action counterpart.

The combaticons are warring. Onslaught is roaring. He’s one metamorping dudicus. They all combine and kick superion’s behind as the big bad battling Bruticus

Swindle is a case study in the many shades of evil. Like Starscream before him, villains with their own agenda elevate them above the generic hired goon. He's about the deal not the destruction. Like the goblins in Warcraft or the Ferengi in Star Trek. Funny thing, Combiner Wars Blast Off I renamed Stormcloud. More out of the micromaster Air Strike team than a Gen 2 incarnation. I imagined Stormcloud as a female Decepticon devoted to Onslaught. Didn't know about Blast Off's crush.

lot of fond memories of 2001 RID and that Bruticus -- specifically the grey camo version that was released. i had a lot of those toys as a kid, and are glad that the Takara Unite Warriors line did a repaint of CW Bruticus into Baldigus. tickles me in just the right way. excellent vid.

Thanks for the upload, always had a soft spot of the Combaticons. Bruticus's Tech Spec summary of his gestalt personality as a brutally dedicated and unerringly loyal super soldier, albeit lacking initiative and creativity, was always a huge appeal to me compared to the chaotic Devastator and the neurotic Menasor.

5:23 Now this is a news for me. I have always been absolutely sure that the Commandos are the _Robots in Disguise_ version of the Combaticons. I didn't even bother to memorize their names referring to them instead by the Combaticon names.

My all time favorite combiner team thanks to the G1 cartoon. Their origin as rebuilt WWII vehicles was unique. I think the Unite Warriors Ruination recolor is a gorgeous set of toys.

I've never even heard of the Combaticons until I watched this video! The only characters in this Video I knew about were: Ruination from Robots in Disguise(2001), and Bruticus Maximus and Constructicon Maximus from Energon. Although I'm still pissed that Hasbro released all the pieces for Bruticus and Construction Maximus separately, where as the Japanese version released them as an entire set! I know because I used to own a figure of Superion Maximus from the Transformers Energon Toyline.

Swindle is my favorite Combaticon and one of my all time faves in G1. He sold his teammates as scrap metal! That is unbelievably awesome.

I love how they slowly evolved from the Powerlinx stuff in Energon, to the WFC game version of Bruticus, to the true combiners in Combiner Wars. Folks have been clamoring for true combiner toys for a long time. Got to give the people what they want.

I'm all up for any kind of relationships in Transformers, but I always thought it was weird in anything that has a team but two of the members had a thing. I dunno, it was just awkward

They have always been my favorite combiner team so I like all 5 of them. Swindle is one of my favorite Transformers period though, he's been a fun character from the G1 cartoon all the way through the IDW comics. I always really liked Vortex a lot too, his level in the Fall of Cybertron game was probably the most fun and interesting of the game, plus his Cybertronian mode was awesome look and gameplay wise.

For being designed from prototypes, they got Vortex almost spot on.

Swindle was one of my favourites as a kid. Probably because he was the only Combaitcon I had the figure of. I got his Alternator version years later and it's a rad figure that one. The Alternator toys were great overall though.

Swindle has always been my favourite Combaticon from G1 and Animated, my favourite moments were (sorry) episode B.O.T. and the Ultimate Weapon cuz his greedy personality always amuses me and his Animated counterpart was the best incarnation like episode Decepticon Air was his best role.

Starscream’s Brigade, 1st appearance of the Combaticons is my favorite appearance by the team going up against the Constructicons before being waylaid by the Stunticons.

I love the Fall of Cybertron designs and characters the most.

Hey Chris, me again. The videos that you put out are super cool to watch and the cool thing is that people like me who love transformers to Cybertron and back, can learn about the origins about some of my favorite characters in detail. Keep up the great work.

That's an adorable couple with Swindle and Blastoff was it? There should be more couples appearing in main story lines to show that Transformers can also feel love. I heard Shatter and Dropkick are a couple in the Bumblebee movie so that's a good start. Anyways, great video about a great Combaticon and hope they get proper screen time in future Transformers movies, if possible.

It’s nice to see a video on one of my favorite transformers. Yes I know they’re five of them but I always counted them as one since I got all of them for my birthday.

Well I can certainly tell you my least favorite favorite Combaticons storyline "International Incident". Ugh I remember being so excited for that one because it was the Combaticons but boy was that arc a let down. The way Onslaught was characterized as an idiot pushed around by the NK ruler. I don't mind that cons make deals with humans and being ordered by fleshlings like Starscream in season three of TFP or the Destrons by Lord Giga in Masterforce but the way Onslaught was rather craven at the threat of not getting Energon was infuriating. Now if Onslaught had responded to that threat by saying their deal was over good luck dealing with the UN counterattack make the NK leader sweat a little that would have been satisfying but no this was the Costa era the robots can't be cooler than the human (sidenote: I have read Costa's GI Joe stuff he's not a bad writer he just could not write TFs). Thank God for Mairghread Scott for managing to salvage the team in TAAO. Now FOC on the other hand that was my favorite depiction. The way the Combaticons work to salvage Starscream's botched op the way the tore into that carrier's control room all of showing them as an elite special forces unite I always envisioned them to be.

I actually had a movor/shuttler hasbro toy but I got it from a garage sale so it was missing all the extra parts and confused me immensely as to where it was from. Good to finally have an answer to that.

I actually had three of the Combaticon toys in a grey recolor: Swindle, Brawl (my favorite of the three), and Vortex. I didn't have Onslaught or Blast-off so I couldn't combine them together.

Could you do a Basics for the following: Humans- the fleshy pals that tag along for better or for worse The War- why are they fighting in the first place Relics of the Primes- special weapons or tools like the star saber or the forge of Solus Prime Action Masters- Transformers without the transformation |Energon- the lifeblood of cybertronians

I got my hands on a set of the RID Commandos last year. They’re so tiny. I hadn’t realised that Scramble City combiners were so small. Still great toys though. Rotor’s probably my favourite of the lot.

I would’ve liked to see them properly implemented into the Bay films. I mean, I actually have been working on a 3D model for a concept BayVerse Bruticus, and I think it’s turning out pretty well!

Definitely want a Swindle one. Also, wouldn't mind a play-by-play on all the various conjunxi from IDW.

My favorute combiner team.EVER. Vortex has always been my favorute and I desperately hope combaticons will see more love in the future both as a team and individually outside swinde.
