LOL, I like to think that since the Autobots beat the Decepticons in MTMTE part 3 that the Autobots on earth contacted remaining Autobots (Ultra Magnus maybe) on Cybertron and Shockwave intercepted the Transmission, that is why was attempting to contact Megatron.
@@Q80Warlock It is weird, I kind of like to think that Skids (I assume just off camera in the 3-parter and Hauler (at least one of them) went back to Cybertron between episodes 3 and 4 to see how many Autobots were still on Cybertron, before the full Autobot crew could return to Cybertron.
Beachcomber's pacifism made more sense in the comics, where you could believe he would be tired of war after millions of years of war.... But here it indeed comes out of nowhere. And btw, the Golden lagoon was in a lagoon - there is a ring of mountains separating it from the sea, and Beachcomber found the cave leading to it.
reminds me how in the 2003 TMNT series in season 4 where the show suddenly turns into an episode of Captain Planet with Donatello randomly going on a speech about the evils of radioactive pollution and the turtles have to shut down a power plant or something.
I love the voices Phelous does for the Decepticons they are pretty hilarious but also very fitting in several regards. I think he could actually voice some of these characters in Transformers properties. Hell if I was a voice director I'd hire him.
The only thing I loved about the Hoist and Grapple episode was Prime playing basketball. He was such a dad and I loved it! The Transformers turning human was something I wanted to see but was a complete missed opportunity because it happened to the G2 cast, same goes with Powerglide and Estoria
@@collegerebel I know, I’m saying I wanted the “turning human” concept to happen to the G1 cast. The G2 (post-movie) cast were so boring and it would’ve been more interesting had it happened to Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide, etc.
Megatron: shockwave you called me for four million years but never sent a rescue ship. Shockwave: I was never able to contact you. Megatron: dawn it shockwave that might be a sign i need help.
Holy Crap Shockwave! I can only imagine all those psychological damages he got through out those FOUR MILLION YEARS. Even Cthulhu feels sorry for Shockwave for the insane amount of insanity he has. Damn this character is dark.
Yeah, plus he was all alone during this time with nothing but drones to talk to, and constantly being mocked by the female Autobots who stole energon from under his nose.
To be fair, Beachcomber's golden lake episode seems intentional as if the episode intends on having a message about consequences of not being honest trusting your friends
In Moviebob's take on the episode, he takes the angle of the symbolism of both Decepticon's and Autobots's fight over a limited resource eventually decimating nature, with the dismayed Beachcomber's "we won" as the fanfare plays as sort of a jab at the whole nature of the war. He also thinks it was dumb, though.
I think it's about the destructive nature of war. A lot of TF episodes follow the script of: one faction develops or finds something powerful (like an energy converter or a weapon), then the other faction finds out about The Thing. They fight over it and The Thing is destroyed, returning both sides to the status quo. So the Beachcomber episode is playing with the meta of that. He keeps the lagoon a secret because he knows as soon as one faction tries to use it to their advantage, it will end the lagoon's destruction, like it always does. This does indeed happen, and the Autobots all cheer because "we won!" But what exactly did they win? The lagoon is destroyed and the war continues.
Why is it I could hear Megatron's voice mail box end up a lot like something out of Archer. After 4 million years, "The voice box of "Megatron!" is full and cannot accept any new messages."
I'm now imagining Megatron checking his voicemail and just listened to seemingly endless voicemails from Shockwave about how he misses Megatron and how he's the greatest.

Something people often forget when discussing Casey Kasem is that he too was of Arabian descent, his parents were Lebanese Druze immigrants to be precise. He was also an adamant activist for the representation of Middle Eastern people in media, lobbying for fairer and more diverse depictions of his people, as more than just caricaturized villains for the white heroes to defeat. So it’s no surprise that the portrayal of Carbombya and its dictator Abdul Fakkadi offended him so deeply that he left the show. Kasem later elaborated that his main issue wasn’t even that Transformers had villainous Arabs, but that there were no good Arabs present to counter that. It’s pretty depressing when you think about it. Even though the guy was popular at the time, what with being the voice of Shaggy Rogers and Dick Grayson/Robin, it was still the mid 80s and his ethnic background meant that the producers could easily brush aside his very valid grievances.
5:29 Casey Kasem, if you didn't know, was actually of middle-eastern descent himself. So you can probably imagine his reaction when producers told him about "Carbombia."
I actually thought the Beachcomber episode was good and made sense. Basically an illustration of how war can destroy the very thing it's trying to protect. The only way that magic lagoon could have stayed safe is if none of the Transformers, not even Beachcomber, had ever found it.
I kinda like Shockwave, vanguard/whipping boy of Cybertron. Then again, I think it's more how he's designed than how his character was. God he looked cool.
Don't you mean _Primus,_ he looked cool? :3 Ever read the G1 comics? That cool design gets its due with a powerful and successful Shockwave that may be the most dangerous Decepticon of all.
@@autobotstarscream765 After reading the comics, watching the toon was like a slap in the face after you just had the epic cliffhanger where Shockwave literally kills ALL the Autobots and hangs there bodies up as spare parts, and then bitchslaps Megatron around when he tries to put him back in his place.
Megatron: this new base is only temporary Starscream: of course it's only temporary. We'll be discovered here almost immediately! Megatron: don't blame me, this was Shockwave's idea Shockwave: Notice me Senpai Megatron! Notice me!
I can imagine all during the Beast Wars, Shockwave is trying to contact Megatron. Even when the universe nearly reset after Optimus nearly dies, he still just tries calling Megatron.
My favorite funniest stupid moment in transformers was when Optimus called Megatron "Fat chance, fat head" at the end of part one of the ultimate evil.
I love it when you do these lists, Phelous. The Transformers were a huge part of my childhood right next to TMNT. I would often head up to the video store and rent Transformers on VHS whenever I could. Funnily enough, even though I would watch the show frequently, I really don't really remember these funny moments, with the exception of Optimus rolling down the hill. Regardless, thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Pretty sure those were Synthoid bodies, the whole episode was a G. I. Joe crossover but without naming the G. I. Joe lore elements because of trying to prevent any possible copyright complications in case their Hasbro Cartoon Universe (Transformers, G. I. Joe, C.O.P.S.) didn't pan out.
This is very funny. :) Shockwave was one of my favorite characters. Shockwave deserves a lot of respect, because he was Megatron's most loyal Decepticon. ... Consider who the most loyal Transformers were. The top two are Shockwave being loyal to Megatron and Cyclonus being loyal to Galvatron. The Autobots didn't have people that loyal.
Probably because the Autobots are already loyal to each other, Shockwave is the exception to the Decepticon way of betraying the fucking shit out of each other so it feels more special.
Regarding Danny's exosuit becoming Arcee's head, I don't think it's supposed to change into it as the shots from inside Arcee's head shows Danny still in the suit without it having changed in any way. This implies the head is empty and Danny just controls Arcee from inside rather than actually becoming the head.
Transformers Animated had an episode where the Autobots were turned into humans, and it pretty touched upon what the G1 episode didn't, including driving regular car versions of their alt modes.
What amazes me the most is how in the original Marvel Comics, Shockwave was a cold, evil, cunning badass who one shots all the Autobots at the end of issue four. How do you go from that to the rather bland Yes man in the show.
The stupid Transformers moment that stood out to me is when Megatron and several other Decepticons are sitting around a camp fire, roasting marshmallows and getting drunk on Energon.
Yes, the Nebulans became their heads/weapons in Headmasters. Basically more of a mergning of the minds into one, like in Avatar, but the cartoon made it seem more like piloting.
Shockwave in the Marvel comics was a completely different character, and he was awesome. I’m glad every other version of him uses that as a template rather than the G1 cartoon.
Funny thing regarding Shockwave: There was this Japan-exclusive PS2 game (that still, for whatever reason, had English voice acting and text) based on Transformers G1 in which Shockwave was played by Barry Gjerde, the voice of Barry Burton in Resident Evil 1.
yeah if you thought the depiction of Arabs in Menahem Golan films was bad it's nothing compared to this, like that one guy in one episode saying "I swear on my sister's goat" or something racist like that, like i'm legit surprised the FCC allowed that.
Vector Sigma, no wonder Hasbro had to retcon Shockwave as an uber badass in later alliterations. I mean damn man Shinji Ikari would tell this bot to nut up XD
Actually I think the Marvel Comic was published concurrently with the cartoon. That version of Shockwave was indeed much more competent and even took control of the Decepticons for a while.
those two were meant to be a satire of "Wiggas"(white people that "Act black") so I they're at least somewhat understandable, I didn't find them offensive or racist personally but dear god this show is shockingly offensive even for the 80s in its depiction of Arabs.
That stuff propably wouldn't be good for his internal organs. I assume they have vents they need to "breathe" through to keep their brains and organs from overheating.
@@saagabragi6938 It must, if Spike and Carly were able to survive there without pressurized space suits. However, there are many examples in G1 where cybertronians have survived in space. Now that I think about it, it could be that they have some internal heat-sink that could allow them to survive temporarily in space if they are usually air cooled.
19:39 Did you notice the HUGE animation error here, where the guy in the back has a chunk cut out of him in the shape of the face of the guy in the front?
Some of the comments try to defend the Beachcomber episode. And I do think the episode could have been improved with a simple change: Don't have the Decpticons discover the lake shortly after Beachcomber did. Instead, Beachcomber is the only one who knows about the lagoon and planned on keeping it secret. But in a moment of weakness, he leads the Autobots to the lagoon and the Decepticons follow them to the lagoon as well. And THEN you have the two forces fight and end up destroying the place and that results in Beachcomber feeling bad. Not only because their war destroyed this peaceful place, but cause he blames himself for being the reason it reached there in the first place.
I could watch an infinite loop of "Powerglide's the name. Well, whoever you are" for eternity. If I was a robot, I would have exploded from the logic on that one.
The height of Transformers' popularity was a bit before my time so I never got into it as a kid but I've become mildly fascinated with it in the last couple of years, partly due to the Transformers Wiki, which pulls off the feat of being both hilarious AND genuinely very informative so I always highly enjoy videos like this. Also, I've been considering looking up the cartoon and maybe some of the comics (as apparently they are very different) so do they hold up? Would an adult be able to get into them?
Personally, I started with Transformers Energon and Cybertron, two series that has some of the worst reputation out of all but at the time, they seemed to be really good to me. Later on, a few years ago I tried to watch the G1 cartoon and I have to say that the writing is really all over the place and the animation is really bad (being limited animation is one thing but having as many animation errors as this one is astounding but again I grew up with Energon which also had sub-par at best animation). I personally found the worse episodes boring while the better ones acceptable or good. I haven't got to the end of the second season (and by consequence to the movie) but I still recommend it if you are really into Transformers (I am not that much). Heck, even I might continue it one day...
I give the tip to watch G1 with a friend, because is a very dumb show, many times everything isn't going to make sense to the animation to the plot. But Transformers: Animated is pretty good and have a nice plot and have Transformers Prime that tried to make a more adult show, but still have plots that go nowhere dark as the kid one, but is good, both of them are on Netflix. And Beast Wars is pretty good too, is old so have nonsense all over the place, but I think only existed on USA Netflix :|
The cartoon does hold up but more in a campy and fun way. The comic on the other hand (while still having lots of fun/dumb moments) is more serious and it has a more coherent long running story going on. Both pretty good. If you're also interested in trying something more recent but with the same G1 characters, the current IDW run of the Transformers comics is pretty good too. It starts kinda slow and on the first half it hits varying degrees of quality but it's still pretty good nonetheless. If you want a good recent show try Transformers Prime. The writing is one of the best in the franchise but it has a more serious tone than the rest of the stuff listed here. Lots of lore tho'. Love me some Transformers lore.
Davide Munna I don't mind campy, especially since it's hard to take the story of alien robots that turn into trucks and planes and stuff seriously in the first place. Either way I think I'll check at least some of the stuff you mentioned, so thanks for the recommendations!
8:46 i think there was a lesson in this episode...something about not doing it alone. beachcomber only wanted to preserve the beauty he had found from the war....
good video, the beachcomber episode is so weird that I love it. The weird preachy message, the decpeticons shooting themselves, how her reacts to his friends, the animals, it's so wild that it goes in a circle into appreciation.
Carly: hello i need to file a claim. My car was completely destroyed by a decepticon Insurance: okay we have a form for that. Where was the car parked when it happened? C: it wasn't parked. I: oh I'm sorry for your loss. Did you file a police report for anyone in the vehicle? C: i was in it with a friend we're both fine. I: oh you escaped before... C: no we were in it. I: Ma'am? C: it just sort of vanished out from under us. I: i see no info on the decepticons deploying such a weapon. They tend to not care about harming humans. Where was this? C: uh... I: ma'am? C: thedecepticonbaseoncybertron I: Your insurance doesn't cover off planet travel ma'am. *click*
Then use a picture of Shockwave from the Transformers Marvel Comics. He was awesome in that series, he even successfully overthrows Megatron and becomes the leader of the Decepticons, hell, he even remained as the main bad guy for quite some time.
An episode where we follow around shockwave as he does his daily ..whatever the hell he does, and tries not to go insane from being alone on a planet would be pretty funny
One of the Dumbest moments in the G1 Series, is when the two Scientist unleashed the Hate Plague, and in the end of that episode while they sorry to Prime, they walk away scott free, despite the fact they almost cause Genocide.
